John T oday the Church once again moves back into Ordinary Time. This is the second Sunday of Ordinary Time and with an early Lent, the winter Ordinary Time will be short. The decorations of Christmas are gone, and we once again are called to quiet reflection on the salvation that has come. The Gospel this week is the wedding at Cana. Jesus is asked by his mother to help with an embarrassing situation, the lack of enough wine for the party. Jesus seems reluctant at first, but then proceeds to produce wine from water. The abundance and quality astound everyone. God’s blessing in all of our lives is abundant and good. St. Paul speaks of the gifts given to each of us for the good of everyone. Everyone’s blessing is different, but when used together they produce much good. We pray to be open to God’s gifts in our daily lives. Thank you to the St. Kieran Women’s Club who threw such a nice reception for Sr. Ida Green last week for her 60th Jubilee celebration. It was so nice to see some of the sisters who served at St. Kieran in attendance, as well as a few young sisters and novices. Sr. Ann Phelan led Sr. Ida in the renewal of her commitment to Christ and St. Francis and St. Clare. We are blessed to have had the Clinton Franciscans with us at St. Kieran. One last note on January 21st, the Clinton Franciscans will celebrate 150 years as a religious community. They were formed to fulfill a promise made by the Trappists monks to educate the children of those who would build their chapel in Kentucky. Congratulations to Sr. Ida and all of the Clinton Franciscans on your work to bring the light of Christ into our world. This week, we heard that Ed Lileikis, our former maintenance man, passed away. Ed had been the maintenance man for over 23 years. There were very few projects in the parish that Ed couldn’t handle. Often he got his family involved so you would see the whole Lileikis clan working together. A generation of children from the school and religious education program knew Mr. Ed. Please keep Gwen, his wife, Michele, and Edward, his children, and Alex his grandson in your prayers. Saturday, February 6th the St. Kieran Women’s Club will be sponsoring a Mardi Gras party for the parish. Please put the date in your calendars and watch the bulletin for more information. Dear Friends, Preparations for the Confirmation Class of 2016 have kicked into high gear. Our candidates took the “dreaded” Confirmation test this past Wednesday, (results were not available in time for this article, but the students have been well prepared). Service hours, Confirmation name reports, and service reports were all due last week as well. Next, they will attend the Spirit Day Confirmation Retreat here at St. Kieran on Saturday, January 30. This retreat is held for teenagers of Vicariate VI who will be Confirmed this spring. There will be nearly 250 teens in attendance, plus scores of volunteers from area Catholic churches. We are very proud to be hosting this year’s retreat. Finally, the teens will be polishing soup pots for the Souper Bowl of Caring collection on the first weekend of February (see ad elsewhere in this bulletin for more information on the collection). A reminder to parents of children celebrating First Reconciliation and First Eucharist this year: there is a mandatory meeting scheduled for Wednesday, January 20, at 6:45 p.m. in the Library Meeting Room. You should have received a letter outlining the details, but in case you did not, please make plans to be here this Wednesday. As always, I ask that you keep our children and their families in your prayers, especially those preparing for Sacraments.

God bless you,

Teri Klopp

Congratulations to Sr. Ida Green who celebrated her 60th Jubilee, and a big thank you to the St. Kieran Women’s

Club for the nice reception they prepared.

Dear Friend of St. Kieran’s Church, The St. Kieran Women’s Club organization has been an important part of the Chicago Heights community for the past 53 years. The women’s club was originally established to serve the members of St. Kieran Parish as well as surrounding communities. Our work provides financial and personal support to St. Kieran Parish, the St. Kieran religious education department, the St. Kieran Cares program and the works founded by Catholic Charities. In the community we have supported; P.A.D.S, the American Cancer society, and local food banks. Every year we struggle to decide what support we can fund because of our financial limitations. Yearly we receive over fifty requests for financial support and turn down 2/3’s of those requests. It is our goal to be able to fulfill an additional…..requests this year. Your support matters With your generosity and support, the St. Kieran Women’s club can continue to provide additional financial support for programs within our parish and throughout the community. This year, funds raised at the our Mardi Gras will be used to continue to support programs such as the ones mentioned above, as well as the many additional programs asking for our assistance. Enclosed you will find a sponsorship/silent auction donation form that outlines the details. 2016 Mardi Gras This year we will be holding a Mardi Gras event on February 6, 2016. This event will be open to the members of St. Kieran Parish and the surrounding communities, and is our organizations main fundraiser for the year. We are seeking sponsors for this event as well as items to be used in our raffle baskets. We hope you will consider supporting the Women’s Club this year and help us make a difference in the lives of many. On behalf of the St. Kieran Women’s Club and parish we would like to thank you for your support. Please know that your donation, at any level, is greatly appreciated and will be used to support programs in St. Kieran church and throughout the community. Please reply no later than January 5 2016 for appropriate acknowledgment of your support. If you have any questions, please contact a member of our Executive Board.
