Spring is a time of renewal and growth. It’s a good time to think about growing the member-ship in your unit. You may have heard that our Conference financial goal this year is for every unit to increase membership by 5%. For example if you have 20 members, add just 1 new

member and you achieve that and have also met one of the criteria to be a Mission Today Unit for 2018! Check the document, “125 Ideas for Recruiting New Members” at our web site and try some of these ideas. Research shows it may take inviting someone 5 times before they accept your invitation to join. So step out of your comfort zone, as the Samaritan woman at the well in John 4 did, when inviting her community to Christ. Remember to reach out to friends and neighbors who aren’t members of your church as they can be members of United Methodist Women too. I’m looking forward to seeing that growth in our units this year!

You missed an interesting and exciting day if you weren’t at our district mission study March 10. Thanks to our presenters, Daphine Strickland and Connie Locklear, who presented the study on “Missionary Confer-ences of the United Methodist Church.” They helped us acknowledge our painful history of treatment of Na-tive Americans and the impoverished in Appalachia and move on. They shared the importance of being in mission with others, not just to others, as it makes them feel more whole and complete. Thanks also need to go to the United Methodist Women at Mt. Pleasant UMC for hosting the event and providing a tasty continen-tal breakfast and hospitality to make the day enjoyable. Valerie Prim and her committee deserve a word of thanks for coordinating the day. Did you see all the supplies collected for Red Bird Mission, which is one of our Missionary Conferences? Join us for the bus trip to Red Bird Mission June 7-9 to deliver them and see what’s happening there.

Did you forget to give to the Legacy Fund on our Day of Giving March 23? If you did give that day, thank you, your funds were matched! If you didn’t give then, you can still give without the match. Two of the cri-teria to be a Mission Today Unit this year relate to the Legacy Fund. One states that your unit gave $186.90 or more to the Legacy Fund. The other states that 100% of your active members gave a gift of $18.69 or more this year. This is our opportunity to take a simple step and assure that the ongoing mission started 149 years ago will continue to thrive in the future and provide a legacy for our daughters, granddaughters, nieces and more.

Thanks for all you do to put faith, hope and love into action. You can see some of that action on our Yadkin Valley District UMW Facebook Page. I hope you continue to share what your unit is doing there. I look for-ward to seeing you at our District Day Apart Memorial Service and at the Conference Spiritual Growth Re-treat at Lake Junaluska.

Spiritual Growth Coordinator: Barbara Crotts Greetings UMW Sisters, As our Day Apart Memorial Service draws nearer, I am trying to get the days activities organized into a program that we will all enjoy and will also be meaningful as we

gather together to remember our deceased sisters in 2017. Our speaker, Julie Taylor - who wrote most of our programs in this years program book called Sacred Spaces: Encounters with God and Neighbor - has a program for us called THE LEGACY OF FAITH IN THE SYM-BOLS OF BREAD AND WATER. I have read her outline for this and I am excited to hear her presentation for us. The program will include participation from the Central UMW and the district team members as we bring forth the symbols. We will, of course, have a time of remembrance and I am in the process of making a banner for the day. I am trying to incorporate a symbol for each lady who passed away on the banner. Something that will remind us that we are all tied together in our Legacy of Faith.....from the 8 ladies who gathered 149 years ago until now - 2018. Our legacy lives on as long as we remain committed as women to carry on the mission work that was started so long ago and is still needed today for women and children all around the world. I am so grateful for Central UMW for stepping forward and offering to host this event. This will be my last event to plan for Day Apart, and I feel so blessed to have been a part of the Yadkin Val-ley District and previously the Lexington District. It has been a real learning experience to see how all these events come together, and I cherish the friendships that have come along with serving on the team. I encour-age anyone and everyone to consider stepping forward and becoming a team member in whatever capacity you can. Even when you think you can't possibly do a job.....you will find that it is with team work and just a little effort of time given......and YOU CAN DO IT! .... REMEMBER......ALSO.......please send in or call or text .....the number of women who will be attending from your church. This will be very helpful in planning for the days activities.

Spring is here and everything is beautiful and we are getting ready for summer activities. Our

Yadkin Valley UMW Annual Event/Meeting is one of the big events this summer. A lot of

work takes place long before the event actually happens. I hope that you have already put this event on your

calendar for Saturday, August 18, 2018. The Annual Meeting will be at 2:00 p.m. at Trinity UMC in

King. The theme is “Celebrating the Legacy: 150 Years in Mission.” Conference President Julia Willis

will be our guest speaker. The Hands-On Project will be contributions to the Legacy Fund and there will be

a love offering for undesignated giving. We will have refreshments, music and fellowship at this meeting.

Please plan to attend and encourage fellow UMW members from your church to come with you. We will

have directions to Trinity UMC in the next newsletter.

We have several events coming up in the next few months. I look forward to seeing you at them. Thank you

for all that you do for UMW and missions at your churches. We are continuing the legacy.

This year's District Mission Study, "Missionary Conferences of the United Methodist Church", was presented by Daphine L Strickland and Nessie “Connie” Locklear and held in Thomasville, at Mt. Pleasant UMC.

Many thanks to: Our speakers, Daphine L Strickland and Nessie “Connie” Locklear All the churches who sent in supplies for the Red Bird Mission. A special thank you to Mt. Pleasant for

providing a truck to transport all the supplies to Winston-Salem, before the rain set in, and all who loaded the truck.

To the committee I would like to say thank you for your total commitment of grace and servanthood. When we work keeping our eyes on Christ, all things are possible.

Tracey Ray and Mt. Pleasant UMW for a wonderful study. Everyone felt very welcomed and learned of the importance of continuing our missional connection and commitment with the Alaska Confer-ence., Oklahoma Conference, and the Red Bird Conference

Please remember to get in touch with Polly Caudle by May 1st for our District bus trip to the Red Bird Mis-sion, (June 7th – 9th). Thank you Polly for graciously putting this trip together for everyone. Remember to stand strong in your faith, being sure of what you hope for and certain of what you do not see. Many of you have asked how long UMW minutes must be retained. Here is the official answer from our Con-ference President:

Minutes Retention: Prior quadrennium plus present quadrennium

The quadrennium period begins on January 1 of the following year after the General Conference. The last General Conference was held in 2016. Using this information, minutes must be maintained from 2012 through 2016 (prior quadrennium) and 2017 through 2020 (present quadrennium). In 2021, the minutes from 2012 through 2016 can be disposed of. You may wish to copy the prior quadrennium minutes to a thumb drive pri-or to disposal. Hope this helps. If you have further questions, please let me know.

RED BIRD MISSION CONFERENCE TRIP

TRAVEL WITH THE YADKIN VALLEY UNITED METHODIST WOMEN TO

BEVERLY , KENTUCKY ON JUNE 7, 8, & 9, 2018

We will leave Pine Grove United Methodist Church, 1130 Jonestown Road, Winston-Salem, NC at 7:00 am. We will be

traveling by Holiday Tour Coach and stopping every two hours for a bathroom break. And we will be stopping for lunch.

We will plan to have dinner in Middlesboro, KY,

Our motel for the 7 and the 8 will be at the Holiday Inn Express in Middleboro, Ky. I am told that they have a wonderful

breakfast each morning and it is included in your room rate.

We will plan to go to the Red Bird Conference Center on the 8th and take all the supplies that you are collecting. They are

looking forward to us coming and will cook our lunch on the 8th for $5.00. We will go back to the motel for dinner on the

8th and travel back to NC on Saturday, June 9th.

Rooms at the motel are $121.27 per night for a total of $242.54 for both nights. For two to a room, the cost will be $121.27

each , for three to a room the cost will be $81.00 each and for four to a room the cost will be $61.00 each.

Program Resource Co-Ordinator: Donna Ireland

Greetings ladies!

As I write this, there is a possibility of another snow event and Easter is just around the cor-

ner. But when it snows and you can’t or don’t want to get out, then what better than to pick up a good book

and read. I want to continue to encourage you to participate in the reading program. The way to get started is

to find you a good book on the reading list and read it and before you know it, you will be hooked. I can rec-

ommend one I just read one entitled “Hiding in the Light” by Rifqa Bary. This is the story about a girl who

risked everything to leave Islam and follow Jesus. I could not put it down when I started reading it.

I also want to share with you that our District Office (located in Winston-Salem) has lots of the UMW reading

program books. If your unit does not want to spend the money to purchase books, you can check them out at

the District Office.

Remember to be sure you are reading at least one book from the five selections. They are Leadership Devel-opment, Social Action, Spiritual Growth, Nurturing Community, and Education for Mission. Remember that reading an eligible children’s book to children also counts. United Methodist Women mission studies can be read for credit in the following categories:

Spiritual growth study to Spiritual Growth Geographic study for Education for Mission Issue study for Social Action

Social Action: Joyce Irby Spring is here!

So glad that things are warming up and sprouting out. I know that many of you are gearing up for Women's Day programs, bazaars, mission trips and other special events. Don't forget to use your program books and Social Action resources as you plan your programs. On a somber note, thank you to all of you who have been signing the letters to our legislators about the vio-lence in our communities and schools. Also our children and youth have built a movement with "intention and focus" to "create pressure to enact specific, concrete change" in regards to gun violence (from the book Building a Movement to End The New Jim Crow). The Legacy Fund: Rhita Newcomb

Dear Sisters in Christ, We celebrated our 149th birthday March 23, 2018, designated as our Day of Giving and I hope you were able to make a dona-tion to the Legacy Fund to further our mission work of the Unit-ed Methodist Women down the street from and around the world. Our last newsletter we talked about the Bethlehem Center in Winston-Salem, NC an institution helping children right here in our district. In our February 2018 response magazine we learned of our international programs, United Methodist Women support some 150 programs carried out by up to 116 organiza-tions in more than 110 countries annually. Your mission giving also provides scholarships to more than 73 students enrolled in institutions of higher education in 18 countries. Let's continue these good works that our foremothers began and next year as we celebrate our 150th anniversary, we will be able to look back in awe at all of the accomplishments that we have achieved and look to the future to the new commitments that lay ahead. Membership, Nurture & Outreach: Rhita Newcomb

I love Charlotte's Web and I love using salutations as a greeting, it's something different and that may be something we need to think about when we invite new members to our units. One of our goals for 2018 is to increase our membership by 5%. Some ideas to help us reach this goal can be found on our website wnccumw.org or wnccumw.org/membership-nurture-outreach/ 125 Ideas for Recruiting New Members (if you do not have access to a computer please let know and I will mail you a copy). People have to be invited multiple times. . .keep inviting. Look at meeting times, format and what works for your community/church, how can you reach more women that have a heart for Mission. As I mentioned in our first newsletter of the new year, we are trying something different this year with our Membership Nurture and Outreach events. I know we are blessed with a lot of talented seamstresses in our district and I would love for you to take part in this opportunity. Each district has been asked to make 100 school kit bags to be used at Spiritual Growth in June. Our first Membership Nurture and Outreach event will be April 28, 2018 at Palmyra United Methodist Church, 5076 NC 8 Hwy. S., Germantown, NC 27019 and we will be making some of the school kit bags. If you are not a talented seamstress, like me, please come and fellowship with us, all hands and fingers will be useful. We will begin at 9:30 am with refreshments and then sew like the wind until 12:30. You may also help with donations of materials and we are asking for 8 sewing machines to used at this event. Please know that all are invited to attend these MNO events, this location would serve the Missional Networks of Stokes, Surry, NW Forsyth and East Bend. You will be receiving more on this event in the future. I look forward to seeing you on April 28th.

Treasurer: Jamie Smith As this 2nd Quarter newsletter is being compiled, we are in the last week of Lent. We are ap-proaching the Easter celebration of our risen Lord! We can never praise God enough for this greatest gift, through which we have received everlasting life!

Reflecting on Lent, Holy Week and Easter, I think about how Christ’s life on earth was spent serving. He served all—rich, poor, Greek, Jew, male, female, young, old…sinners. We’ve all been given spiritual gifts, including serving, and scripture with instruction. “As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God’s varied grace.” (ESV 1Peter 4:10) As United Methodist Women we can put our gifts to use for the cause of racial justice, climate justice, eco-nomic justice, immigration, deportation, human trafficking, mass incarceration, gun control, etc. We can be the voices for women, children and youth throughout the world. Because we serve a risen Savior we have HOPE for the least of these! It’s always good to come together in fellowship as UMW. I hope to see all of you on May 5th! Blessings,

Would you be interested in being a Communication Co-Ordinator? Or maybe one of your

UMW sisters should be considered? As my tenure is up this year as Communication Co-

Ordinator, the Nominations team will be out looking for the next communication lead for YVD UMW.

The position does involve using spreadsheet either in Excel or Word table for officer names and addresses.

Newsletter can be created in Publisher, Word etc. Of course, you can make the newsletter your own… I

don’t have a creative bone so I borrow a lot.

You may need to send out information as needed to our officers at the unit or executive team. Taking pic-

tures is not a requirement but I feel it gives a more personal feel instead of a bunch of words. I just point and

shoot and hope for the best with a camera or camera phone. Polly Caudle, our Historian, as well as units

have help capture our activities.

School Bag Instructions

Materials List:

16” X 36” Heavy Duty Fabric or 2 pieces of 16” X 36” Dress Fabric Material (DO NOT CUT OR SEW A SEAM AT THE FOLD

LINE/BOTTOM OF THE BAG, AS IT WEAKENS THE BAG)

Two 3” X 23” pieces of Heavy-duty Fabric or Two 6” X 23” Dress Fabric Material for School Bag Straps

Thread

DO NOT FILL THE BAG WITH SCHOOL SUPPLIES. We need the bags only.

1. Cut a piece of heavy-duty fabric that measure 16” x 36”. When using dress fabric material, cut two pieces that measure 16” x

36” to insure the bag is strong enough. (PLEASE AVOID THE USE OF FRAYING FABRIC)

2. Fold 16” x 36” fabric in half to make a 16” x 18” bag. (DO NOT CUT OR SEW A SEAM AT THE FOLD LINE/BOTTOM OF

THE BAG, AS IT WEAKENS THE BAG) When using dress fabric material, lay the two 16” x 36” pieces of fabric on top of

each other, and then fold both pieces in half.

3. Serge both side seams (1/2” to 1” seam allowance) and around top or straight stitch with zigzag over-lock reinforcement. If fab-

ric happens to fray, please use French Seams to cover fraying. To secure a Serge seam when coming to the end of both side

seams at the bottom on bag, Serge a few stitches off, raise presser foot, then slide material 1” back and re-stitch to the end again

to insure no fraying. Make straight stitch, then over cast with zigzag to cover the edges if a serger is not used.

4. Fold top edge of School Bag to inside 2” so the bag is 16” long

5. Make School Bag straps by cutting two 3” x 23” pieces of heavy-duty fabric. When dress fabric is used to make straps, cut both

straps measuring 6” x 23”, then fold both raw edges into the middle and fold again.

6. Fold each strap in half lengthwise and serge or turn sides in ½” and top stitch. Serge down on both sides of the straps to insure a

strong handle.

7. Finished straps should measure about 1” x 23”

8. Pin straps to School Bag, one strap per side, like a grocery bag. Pin 2 inches from side of bag and extend 2 inches inside of bag.

9. Finish School Bag by straight stitching around top twice. Back stitch over handles to reinforce. Reinforce with 2 or 3 rows of top

stitching.

10. To reinforce the straps, stitch an X on all 4 ends.

11. Finished School Bag should measure no less than 14” x 16” with 19” straps. (NOTE: COMPLETED SCHOOL BAGS MEAS-

URING LESS THAN 14” X 16” CANNOT BE USED AS IT WILL NOT ACCOMMODATE ALL COMPONENTS OF THE

SCHOOL KIT)

UMCOR School Bags Needed One of the hands on projects for the Spiritual Growth Retreat at Lake Junaluska June 15-16 is for each district to bring 100 unfilled UMCOR school bags which will be distributed at registration to be filled and returned at mission U in July. The bags need to be brought to the district office no later than Monday June 11. The other hands on project for Spiritual Growth Retreat is the UMCOR hygiene kits which should be taken to the Lake when you go to the retreat.
