SeCan is undergoing a substantial turnover in its Board as several long-term directors have stepped back to make way for the next wave of seed industry leaders. We have been blessed at SeCan to have benefitted for many years from the steady hand of someof Canada’s most well-respected independent seedsmen. This leadership has left us well-positioned for the future. Fortunately, we welcomed an impressive group of newdirectors to the Board last year and expect to add a number of equally impressive directors this year.

Our directors represent an excellent cross section of the industry. Each brings a uniqueand valuable perspective to the table. This is important as our Board will be tasked with charting a course to make SeCan a continued driver of success for independentseedsmen across the country. This will require vision and a keen awareness of effectivegovernance that enables both directors and management to focus on their fundamentalobjectives and roles.

Over the past year, your SeCan Board has spent considerable time reviewing governance policies to ensure the organization is current with evolving issues like cyber security, financial controls and succession. We have also updated a number of policies to makes sure that management controls are in place, but in such a way thatSeCan staff have the ability to react quickly and make decisions as necessary in this rapidly changing environment.

In addition, our Board has supported SeCan staff involvement over the past year in the discussions around the Seed Synergy initiative and industry deliberations on ValueCapture. We will continue to work to ensure the interests of independent seedsmen are considered as changes happen.

Finally, your Board continues to focus on ensuring SeCan is positioned to be a top contender for future variety acquisition. We believe that new gene editing technologiesand plant breeding innovations will improve the speed with which improved varieties are released. We want to make sure SeCan will be able to take advantage of these new varieties for members.

I wish to extend my most sincere thanks to the Board and the entire SeCan membershipfor their continued support of this organization that is so important to our collectivefuture success.

Reportfrom the General Manager

2017 was another great year for Canada’s independent seedsmen. SeCan members offered leading genetics in many market segments across the country, while the association renewed agreements to maintain this position well into the future. Wheat and soybeans were the main drivers again, while progress was made in adding both breadth and depth to other market segments. A portfolio of pulse varieties was secured in 2017 following the formation of an agreement with Saskatchewan Pulse Growers for distribution of key varieties outside Saskatchewan. In addition, SeCan renewed several key research agreements last year, and spent considerable time preparing to secure new federal government funding under the Canadian Agricultural Partnership (CAP)program. This 5-year federal funding program is critical to leverage SeCan’s contributions, along with producer groups who partner in supporting the leading public plant breeding programs across Canada.

SeCan’s tag line “Canada’s Seed Partner” continues to be the guiding light for SeCan management and staff. These partnerships extend beyond the boundaries of our membershipto reach both up and down the value chain. We seek mutually beneficial agreements withleading public and private seed sector developers of genetics and traits, as well as with seedretailers and downstream processors to ensure there is demand for the products we bring forward.

Given the complexity of SeCan’s relationships in the seed industry, staff and managementspend an inordinate amount of time engaged with industry associations. Several of these seed industry associations now aim to merge under a single entity, and from SeCan’s perspective, this “Seed Synergy” initiative will be tremendously beneficial in driving both the efficiency and the effectiveness of Canada’s seed sector.

Following a strong year of member seed sales in 2017, the association now sits with just over 14 million in reserves – most of which is restricted specifically for investment in research

and development activities. From a human resource perspective, SeCan remains exceptionally lean with only 18 staff across Canada. Through effective use of information technology, we have been able to reduce our allocation of staff dedicated to administration and increase field staff support of members, with new marketing rep positions filled in both eastern and western Canada. SeCan has a staff contingent that is both dedicated and passionate about seeing members succeed in these exciting times ahead.

On behalf of our entire team at SeCan I can say we are extremely proud to work on behalf of Canada’s independent seedsmen as “Canada’s Seed Partner”.

Over the last two years, SeCan was proud to support efforts to build public trust in our Canadian agriculture and food system. Increasing skepticism towards the application of science in food production influences public policy, and our ability to successfully bring forth and commercialize innovative products that the agricultural community depends on. As a science-based industry, we know it is critical to continue to have access to the best tools to effectively do our part in growing the economy and feeding the world.

As a legacy project for SeCan’s 40th Anniversary, the SeCan Board and management made a commitment to support buildingpublic trust with our “Growing Trust” project – where corporately SeCan matched member, staff and industry donations.

We are proud to announce this fundraising drive was successfully completed in 2017 with a $100,000 donation to theCanadian Centre for Food Integrity.

A huge thanks to members, staff and industry partners who helped us reach this goal!
