Past simple and past continuous
We use past simple to talk about finished actions in the past and in the past continuous to talk about activities in progress.
On 22nd August, the drill returned to the surface.
I was getting skinnier every day.
We can connect past actions with when and while.
They were working when there was a cave-in.
The earthquake struck while we were sleeping
In a story, we use the past simple for actions and the past continuous for the background information.
Ellen looked out and sighed. It was raining again.
