Analysis of One Key Artwork
Title- Firefighters at Work, Sabotaged Oil Wells in KuwaitDate- 1991
Content- There are two brave firefighters in this picture who have just finished closing a once leaking Kuwaiti oil well. They are both soaked with oil and look as though they have just completed an onerous task.
Composition- This picture is composed of two firefighters, one damaged oil well and a field full of oil
Technical Qualities- The aperture is low and therefore the picture has a lack of light.
Psychological Qualities- This picture will have a tremendous impact on the millions of people who supported an end to the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait. It shows the suffering which the coalition forces had to encounter in their attempt to bring peace through the gulf war.
Emotional Qualities- People feel sad that this type of suffering is happening in the world. It will especially emotionally affect the citizens of the countries who supported the coalition forces, because it is their people who are suffering like this
Personal Response
What I personally liked so much about this photograph was that:• It conveys the message and true reality of what many brave Canadian
men and women had to go through to bring and end to the Gulf War• It shows the ugly side of war, and therefore it will increase peoples
opposition to future wars
What caught my imagination was that:• This pictures shows firefighters covered in oil and therefore made me
imagine the suffering which oil can cause do to man’s intrinsic greed
Conclusion/Summary
• Showed the true nature of many of the things which are happening in the world, such as coffee workers and miners in third world countries.
• Particularly noted for his social documentary photography of workers in less developed nations
• Took pictures of landscapes and wildlife and of human communities living in their ancestral traditions and cultures
