This is the official publication of the Seattle Chapter, IPMS-USA. As such, it serves as the voice for our Chapter, and depends largelyupon the generous contributions of our members for articles, comments, club news, and anything else involving plastic scale modeling andassociated subjects. Our meetings are generally held on the second Saturday of each month, (see below for actual meeting dates), at the NorthBellevue Community/Senior Center, 4063-148th Ave NE, in Bellevue. See the back page for a map. Our meetings begin at 10:00 AM, exceptas noted, and usually last for two to three hours. Our meetings are very informal, and are open to any interested modeler, regardless of interests.Modelers are encouraged to bring their models to the meetings. Subscriptions to the newsletter are included with the Chapter dues. Dues are $25a year for regular mail delivery of the newsletter, and $15 for e-mail delivery, and may be paid to Spencer Tom, our Treasurer. (See addressabove). IPMS Seattle ElectionProcess

As you know, we have not had a formalelection for many years – at least entiretime I have been a somewhat activemember in the club. Although we operatelargely as an informal group of friends,IPMS-Seattle is now a formally incorpo-rated entity, and is also a rather sizableorganization as far as clubs go. Given this,we should go through a formal electionprocess periodically although I wouldcertainly not recommend doing this everyyear unless the membership would like todo so.

Given this, here are some guidelines I haveasked Robert to follow for this year’sformal election process.

• The candidates will be givenopportunities in the May newsletter aswell as the May club meeting to make astatement about why they are interested inthe position and what they would like toaccomplish as a club officer.

• After the candidates have hadtheir chance to speak at the May clubmeeting, the membership present at themeeting should feel free to ask questions,as appropriate. Even though I don’t expectthis to be a problem, I should note thatwhile at least a couple of us will stop anytalk about political or other such topics,candidates will be allowed to talk aboutvirtually anything that isn’t libelous.

• I have asked that we do this via aprivate ballot.

Members will need to reveal their nameswhen they submit their votes. However,the only recipient of this information willbe Robert Allen (ballots will be submittedto him). Robert will use the names only toverify that the person submitting the voteis a formal member.

Although we are used to doing the usualhand raising, informal process, this is thefirst time in 20 years that Terry Moore isnot a/the candidate for club President, andI very much believe we need to givemembers an opportunity to make theirchoices for President and Vice-Presidentwithout having this information revealedto the membership in an open meetingformat.

Please either e-mail your vote to Robert at:[email protected], or mail yourchoice to him at: 12534 NE 128th Way#E3, Kirkland, WA, 98034.

• Since this is a private ballotprocess, anyone who is out of town willstill have an opportunity to vote.

• I will give Robert the activemember list after the club’s May meeting.This will give new members an opportunityto vote based on what they have heard thecandidates present at the May clubmeeting.

• All votes need to be either e-mailed or postmarked by May 31, 2011.This will provide Robert with enough timeto tally the votes.

• Write-in votes are allowable.However, if the vote is for anyone who hasalready taken himself/herself out ofconsideration for the candidate pool (Ibelieve there at least two who have donethis), Robert will inform the voter that thewrite-in candidate will not be accepted.

• If anyone is paranoid and wantsto verify that his/her ballot has beenreceived, this needs to be confirmed withRobert directly by June 4.

• If the tallies are within 10 votes ofeach other (i.e., about 10 percent of thepaid membership), I will join the processand will do a recount together with Robert.If there is still a tie after the recount, theclub will purchase two whiffle bats. Thecandidates in question at that point will beasked to run around the room and beat on

each other at the June 2011 club meetinguntil one loses by either relenting ormaking contact with a model on thedisplay table.

• The winners of the election willbe revealed in the club’s June 2011newsletter. The only two people who willsee this information before the newsletter’sformal release will be Norm Filer (who hasto set up the online newsletter link), andme (since I print the hard copy of thenewsletter.) Norm and I usually get thisinformation about two days before I havebeen sending out the newsletter, and wewill keep the election information privateuntil the newsletter is out.

That should be it. Hopefully, this won’t betoo tough on anybody. Also, let’s makesure that anything not related to our modelbuilding activities doesn’t get into this.Remember, above all, IPMS-Seattle is agroup of friends that got together becausewe build models.

IPMS Election CandidateStatements

We have asked the candidates for theupcoming IPMS Seattle election to submita brief statement about themselves. Wehave two candidates for the position ofPresident, Andrew Birkbeck and JonFincher, and one for the position of Vice-President, Eric Christianson. Here are thestatements that they submitted:

Andrew Birkbeck -Candidate for President

My name is Andrew Birkbeck, and I amrunning for the position of President ofIPMS Seattle. I have been a modeler since1968, and a member of IPMS Seattle since1985. I actively model on a regular basis,and my main interests are military vehiclesof all kinds, military aviation of WW2, andWRC racing cars. I also have an interest inmovie sci-fi themed models and the pilotsof the “British Empire”: RAF, RNZAF,RAAF, RCAF etc.

As a member of IPMS Seattle, I have held anumber of organizational positions over

the years. In the late 1980s and early 1990s,I was part of the Executive “board” alongwith Terry Moore and Keith Laird, helpingorganize the chapter meetings, plan andexecute the annual Spring Show and liaisewith other Region 7 chapters. In 1990, Iwas part of the initial organizing commit-tee, together with Terry Moore and BobLaBouy, which launched a bid for the 1992IPMS USA National Convention. Upon ourChapter being awarded the bid for the ’92Convention, I held the position of Conven-tion Co-Vice Chairman together with TerryMoore. I have also held the posts ofNewsletter editor, Spring Show HeadJudge, and Spring Show Coordinator (nowknown as Chairman).

If elected as your President, my initialpriority would be to acquaint myself withall the members of the Chapter. Many ofyou I know well, some not so well, andsome of the new members not at all. Iwould encourage you to give me youropinions about the club, what you like,and anything that concerns you. Once Ihave heard from you all, I would set aboutmeeting with the other Executive Boardmembers, to report my findings, and seewhat, if any changes might best beimplemented to meet the requests of themembers. To my mind, the position ofChapter President exists to synthesize thewishes of the members in order to maximizeeveryone’s enjoyment. Sometimes thereare conflicting opinions as to what thebest policy should be. The Presidentshould listen to those who have anopinion, and help lead the Executive Boardin attempts to reconcile any differences.A second goal would be to reach out toother local IPMS chapters, and non-IPMSmodel clubs in order to promote our greathobby among fellow modelers and with thegeneral public.

In conclusion: I would like to be Presidentbecause I truly love the hobby, and enjoysharing modeling experiences with fellowhobbyists. I believe I would make a goodPresident due to my proven organizationalskills and my love of the hobby would helpme continue the success the club hasexperienced over the last many years.

Jon Fincher -Candidate for President

My name is Jon Fincher, and I wouldappreciate your support for President ofIPMS Seattle.

I’ve been a member of IPMS Seattle forroughly ten years, and for the past eightyears, I’ve been part of the Spring ShowCommittee, most recently as the ShowCoordinator. In my day job at Microsoft, Ibring together people from differentgroups and deliver results. At our monthlymeetings, I’m usually the one making jokesand having fun – this is a social club, afterall, and one dedicated to a hobby. Thisattitude, along with my skillset andexperience in the Spring Show, are thequalifications I bring to the job.

A President, there are a few things I wouldlike to accomplish:• Add a “seminar” to our monthlymeeting. Setting aside 10-15 minutes ofour meeting for a how-to discussion fromsomeone who knows how-to. There are alot of techniques passed on informally atour meetings – I’d like to see that mademore regular.• Increase our outreach to otherregional clubs. When I visited IPMSVancouver in January to evangelize ourSpring Show this year, I was greeted withwarm welcomes and some surprise – thiswas the first time they rememberedsomeone from IPMS Seattle visiting duringa meeting. I want to expand that to includeas many of the other regional clubs aspossible.• Bring a Recon back to Seattle.There are thirteen chapters in our region,and IPMS Seattle is the largest. It’s been anumber of years since we hosted aRegional Convention – I’d like to workwith our Regional Coordinator and theclubs in the area to bring that back withinthe next two years.• Bring a National to Seattle. I’vespoken about this with a number of peoplein IPMS Seattle – we feel we have the coregroup necessary to bring a successfulNational back to Seattle. After solidifying

our relationship with the regional clubs,and hosting a Recon, bringing a Nationalback will be well within our reach.

There are other things I’d like to do aswell, but will leave them for future discus-sions.

I hope I can count on your support for meas President, and look forward to workingwith you on these and other projects in theyears to come.

Eric Christianson -Candidate for Vice-President

Fellow Modelers –

My name is Eric Christianson and I amrunning for Vice President of our club. Forthose of you who know me I’ll try to makethis brief and fresh. I am 53 now, but I havebeen happily building models since I wasseven. I am a UC Berkeley graduate,formerly schooled in business andengineering, although I’ve worked as aprogrammer for most of my adult life,including these last six years for my owncompany. I have two sons, 9 and 13, and avery supportive girlfriend (Jackie) – whoalso builds!

I joined IPMS Seattle in 2003 and havethoroughly enjoyed the experience ofmeeting with my fellow modelers, andbuilding all types of models. There is nodoubt in my mind that we have the bestclub around, as well as one of the largestin the country. I attend the IPMS Nationalsevery year and I have tried to add theannual Armor-centric AMPS show in forgood measure. For the last five years Ihave been on the Spring Show board and Irun the raffle at that annual show.

What I hope to do for our club is to shakethings up a little. I have heard a lot of greatideas circulating around for want ofsomeone to facilitate them. I believe thatwe have a wealth of talent in our club justwaiting to be tapped – I think that we canfind a way to spread some of that knowl-edge around via demonstrations in thathandy room in the back that is never used.

Working with our President, I want to findout what people want to do different at ourmeetings, and then make that happen. Iwant to extend the parts of our meetingsthat people enjoy the most and reduce thetime spent on the other end. I want toincrease our presence at the Nationalslevel by sponsoring several contestcategories, which would be the first stepwe can take to (hopefully) putting on ourown Nationals event in 2016, the 100thAnniversary of Boeing Aircraft Company.

These are just some of the things that Ihope to get the opportunity to work on,but I need your support!

SteelBeach 1/48th ScaleS2F Resin Seats

Kinetic's S2F release is a welcome additionto the pool for US Naval Aviation fans, butthere are areas where the kit is somewhatof an underperformer. The cockpit is onesuch area, and SteelBeach is one of thefirst to address this with replacement seatsin Resin.

Each set comes with two seats to replacethose in the kit. The plastic packaging is alittle large for the provided materials; whilenone of the three sets I ordered had anydamage, the pieces were free to rattlearound and the possibility of a brokendetail exists, although I honestly considerit a low probability. Casting is well doneand bubble/defect free. Mastering isdecent; I have seen crisper details by othercompanies but considering that there willbe no open canopy what you get is farmore than adequate. Removal from thepour stub by a razor saw should be quickand painless.

With its large cockpit windows foreffective patrol work, the seats in the S2Ffeature prominantly as a cockpit detail.While I'm sure that a dedicated cockpit/interior set is in the works, these seats willbe great for those who want a decentlooking cockpit without a lot of addedexpense and effort.

IPMS Seattle Spring Show2011 Summary

Well, another Spring Show has come andgone, and I’m pleased to say it wasanother successful year for the show.Other parts of this newsletter will havedetails on winners – I want to talk aboutthe show in general.

First, the numbers: We had a total of 585models entered by 153 different modelers,which are up from last year (2010 had 513models from 144 modelers, our worst yearsince 2006). We also had 460 spectatorscome in the door this year. We raised alittle more US$1,700 for the club this year,which is down almost $700 from last year.We had some new expenses this year, suchas a club projector and storage facilities, aswell as some increases in costs which helpexplain the drop in income this year. Thegeneral state of the economy is having animpact as well, as we have seen a steadydrop in all categories since 2009.

We put on six seminars with a total of 31folks attending them. We also had folksvideotaping the seminars, and we plan tomake DVDs of those seminars available forfolks later this summer. We gave six kidsthe chance to put a model on the table withthe Spitfire build this year, and have highhopes for its continued popularity infuture years.

We also added a survey to the show thisyear to identify our areas of improvement.We’re still analyzing the data and process-ing verbatim comments, but I can sharesome preliminary numbers. We got back131 surveys of the 300 we printed. Most ofthese came from modelers (108 of them),with the rest being spectators, friends, orvendors. The show draws folks fromoutside Washington, as 32 were from outof state residents. Most folks discoveredour show from their club (59 of them), withthe rest finding out from local hobbyshops, websites, or other sources. Once

we have the data analyzed, we’ll share itwith the club.

After the show, I received some emailsdirectly about the show – if you had anydoubt of the impact we have on the hobbyin the area, then you will be heartened bythese comments:

I attended your club’s spring show lastweek, and I have to say it gets better everyyear. Congratulations on a superb show.

I had a wonderful time, (and I always do),but yesterday was special. The auditoriumseemed a little busier than 2010… Thepresence of National/International classvendors such as Jeff Garrity of RareplaneDetective is always a good sign… It is anhonour and pleasure to attend andsupport your show and I hope to be therein 2012.

I think the survey was a great idea and Ihope you come up with some usefulsuggestions.

This was my first time at the Seattle show.I enjoyed my visit and I see Seattle IPMSputs on a great show.

IPMS 2011 Spring show –Seminar Report

At the December, 2010 meeting, TerryMoore, Jon Fincher, and Ken Murphyasked me if I would be willing to be thenew “Seminar Czar”. Since I didn’t knowwhat I was getting into, and they weren’ttelling, I said “yes”.

If I knew then, what I know now…Iprobably still would have done it.

One of my objectives, other than tosurvive the process, was to do somethinga little different that what had been done inthe past. This year, for the first time sinceIPMS-Seattle began offering seminars, weoffered a model building seminar for kidsand a short movie during the lunch hour.

Seminar Presentations

This year’s seminars were presented byTerry Moore, Eric Christianson, KenMurphy, and Tracy White. All seminarswere well attended. Terry’s seminar was onbuilding a vacuform kit and includeddemonstrations on cutting out parts,fitting parts as well as gluing techniques. Iwould have liked to attend this seminarbecause I have a Khee Kha Bellanca CH-300 kit in progress on my bench that wouldhave benefited from this seminar.

Eric Christianson presented a seminar onweathering techniques, which includeddetailed demonstrations on: Filters,Washes, Pigments, Streaking, and Dry

Brushing. When Eric showed up onseminar day, he brought a literal tool box ofpaints, brushes, pigments and othersupplies. In addition, he brought in no lessthan six armor kits in various stages ofweathering. The techniques that Ericdemonstrated apply equally to othergenres of models in addition to armor.

Ken Murphy conducted a PowerPointpresentation on how to make your owndecals. His presentation was based on hisInternet Modeler article on decal making.Ken included demonstrations on makingsimple decals as well as making a decalfrom in image from an old photograph. Iwas particularly impressed with how Kenwas able to make a convincing Turkishmarking for an Albatross D.III from a blurryphotograph. This really opened up thepossibilities for me in modeling subjectsnot offered by manufactures or aftermarketdecals. The only glitch in Ken’s seminarwas that the computer/projector operator(aka Seminar Czar) didn’t get the systemworking properly until Ken was about one-fourth of the way into his presentation).Oops!

Rounding out the seminar presenters wasTracy White. Tracy made a presentationon Naval Camouflage. Up until I attendedTracy’s naval camouflage seminar, myexperience with naval camouflage con-sisted primarily of Gray, Gray, and Gray.Tracy’s seminar was very enlightening tothe variations on “Dazzle” camo as well assome of the less successful experimentswith naval camo. It was fascinating hownaval camouflage could not only changethe perception of the size of a ship but thedirection is was moving as well. I wasparticularly intrigued by Tracy’s presenta-tion of the camouflage used on the Titanicsister ship Olympic.

Spitfire Build for Kids

The attendance at the Spitfire BuildingSeminar was somewhat disappointing. Outof 25 kits prepared, only 10 of them werebuilt during the seminar. My 11-year oldson, Jonathan, also got into the act byhelping the builders with their models.

Those who actually built a model seemedto have a good time. Many appreciatedthat the kits were pre-finished. What madethis building seminar different, was thatthe kits were not the usual snap togetherkit but one that required some modelingskill and glue. My goal for this seminarwas to distinguish ours from the usual“Make-n’Take”. Some of the completedkits actually made it to the show table.Every person who made a model got aname tag and a participation ribbon. Onthe downside, the glue that I selected touse was totally unsatisfactory. I wasconcerned about kids using regularstyrene glue during the seminar. I electedto use non-toxic glue instead. My con-cerns proved to be unfounded. I will useregular tube glue in the future if we chooseto continue with this event.

Movies and Models

William Wyler’s WW2 documentaryMemphis Belle was shown during thelunch hour. Tables were provided for thosewho wished to eat their lunch whilewatching the film. In addition, Terry Mooreprovided several of his B-17 models which

were displayed with the movie. Thank youTerry, for providing the models.

Volunteers and Assistants

My sincere thanks to Girl Scout Troop#41581. The Spitfire Build Seminar requiredpainting and decaling 25 kits on the sprueas well as repackaging the kits. This was adaunting task. Since no member signed upto help in the preparation of the kits, Isolicited the help of my daughter’s GirlScout troop. They eagerly agreed to helppaint the kits even though none of themhad ever built a model let alone spraypainted one on the sprue. Unfortunately,only 13 of the 25 kits that I ordered hadarrived in time for the Girl Scout paintingsession. After some initial instruction andpractice, the girls unpackaged the kits andorganized the sprues for painting.

Their assignment was to paint the uppersurfaces of the kits and set them aside todry. We ended up with seven kits in RAFgreen and six kits in RAF grey. When thepaint was dry, the girls repackaged the kitsto keep the parts organized. I must say, thepainting that they did was excellent with

no missed area and minimal drips anddrops. (Unlike some of the other kits that Ipainted later). The only disaster, if youcould call it that, was that one of the girlswent home with an RAF green thumb.

A big thank you goes out to Terry Moorefor printing the large poster for the seminarschedule as well as smaller seminar postersthat were located throughout the show.John Carr Farrelly printed the seminar roomsigns. Thanks to both of you for yourparticipation.

Finally, thank you to those who offered tohelp the kids build models on the showday. Our modeling assistants were: DavePiehl, Gary Webster, Chellie Lynn, andScott Kruize.

Planning for Next Year

Planning for next year has already begun.I’d like continue with the format of hands-on demonstrations and PowerPointpresentations. At this point, Scott Kruizehas expressed interest in doing a seminaron modeling tools and techniques. Othertopics under discussion are using found-household materials for modeling and resincasting. A seminar on airbrushing tech-niques would also be welcome. it was time for someone else to lead. I haveimmensely enjoyed my time at the front ofthe room as being the rather shy person Iwas when I took the position originally,allowed me to face a room full of peoplestaring at me. It actually helped me dealwith speaking in front of large crowds on aprofessional level as I used my experiencein front of you as a guideline when I oncehad to stand in front of a large group ofattorneys (a very frightening thought)some years ago to give a presentation onour company. That was an unforgettableadventure. I seem to recall that I putimaginary Optivisors on all those in theaudience. Also, I've used the experiencedealing with people face to face at thevariety of trade shows my companyattends every year.

I've been taking cursory looks at some ofmy past PrezNotes columns and find thatsome models I talked about ten or moreyears ago still aren't finished. Fortunately,more of them are finished than not, butthat still bothers me a bit. I've also had theopportunity to take you on some of mymany travels, as writing my "AirlinePrezNotes" was a great distraction whilstshoehorned into a seat designed for

someone two feet shorter than I. I'm goingto be somewhat at a loss as to what to doabout that on my next trip which is only afew weeks away.

One thing I can be thankful for is that youdidn't come storming to the presidentialpalace armed with sticks, stones, and AK-47s to demand my ouster, like what hashappened recently in a number of Africanand middle eastern countries. Unfortu-nately, I don't have a villa on the oceanthat I can retreat to like one of the recentlydeposed leaders is doing. I don't evenhave a villa in Tukwila (not that I'd everwant to move there anyway).

This doesn't mean that I'm going tobecome a "gentleman farmer" like mygrandfather, although I wish I had his hayrake about now as the grass in my backyard is getting to be just a bit overwhelm-ing. Maybe it'll stop raining long enoughfor me to do something with it. Or not.Besides, I need to work on the WingnutGotha...

We have a terrific chapter in IPMS Seattle,with 100 members strong. Our Spring Showis one of the best in the west and it's beena real pleasure to have been a part of it in

my own small way. Thanks for the ride. Asthe late, great Ted Holowchuk used to say:"It's been a slice..."
