Welcome to the 2015 edition of Axe Magazine, an annual publication aiming to provide a richer, deeper, more enjoyable guide to everything that The Axe Valley has to offer.
The Axe Valley has something for everyone. The powerful river at its heart winds through
the market town of Axminster, which connects the valley to Exeter and London via the
south west mainline. Down river the water opens out into the expansive Axe Estuary,
which is a bird spotters haven. Alongside this runs the wonderful Seaton Tramway with
views of Axmouth, connecting the mile-long seafront of Seaton to the charming town
of Colyton. Along the coast is the traditional and sleepy fi shing village of Beer, which is
tucked away amid the white stone cliffs.

A WEEK IN THE AXE VALLEY
W O R D S : L u c i e S i m i c
The pretty little market town of Axminster sits at the heart of the Axe Valley in East Devon, and
it’s the perfect place for those of you who want to enjoy a real taste of West Country living.
Part of an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the Axe Valley is just a short drive from the
famous Jurassic Coast and it’s also home to Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall’s River Cottage
Canteen and Deli – so foodie or fossil hunter, you’ll be in your element.
The Axe Valley Bird and Animal Park sits in the Axe Valley, near Axminster, and is one of those
lesser-known little zoos that take visitors by surprise. Home to all kinds of birds and mammals
(including zebra!), this is a friendly wildlife park that encourages visitors to take their time and
engage with the animals wherever possible.
The Lyme Bay Winery, originally Lyme Bay Cider Co., was founded on a dream to leave the city
and return to the West Country to live. Twenty years later and Lyme Bay Winery is producing
an award-winning selection of ciders, country wines, meads, fruit liqueurs and cream liqueurs.
East Devon’s glorious Axe Valley is also home to the Seaton Tramway – which operates narrow
gauge heritage trams between Seaton, Colyford and Colyton. The picturesque route travels
alongside the River Axe Estuary through two nature reserves and gives an unrivalled view of the
abundant wading bird life.
In nearby Beer you can bring out your inner child and ride the Beer Heights Light Railway at
Pecorama, considered by many the fi nest 7¼ inch gauge railway in Britain.

A NEW ERA FOR SEATONW O R D S : R o s s P a c k m a n
Opening its doors for the very fi rst time in 2015, Seaton Jurassic
promises to offer visitors the 250 million-year story of evolution,
wildlife and geology on the Jurassic Coast.
Over a decade in the planning, this £4m visitor attraction will take
advantage of Seaton’s geologically unique location, with examples of
the Jurassic, Triassic and Cretaceous eras all within a short distance.
Set to contain an interactive exhibition celebrating the wealth of
natural wonders in the area, Seaton Jurassic will provide detailed
displays on the Undercliffs National Nature Reserve, Beer’s iconic
chalk cliffs and the Axe Estuary, an internationally important habitat
for migrating waterfowl and containing several Sites of Special
Scientifi c Interest.
The site will also house Seaton’s new Tourist Information Centre,
providing an invaluable resource to anyone visiting the Jurassic Coast
and share a central position with the southern terminus of the Seaton
Tramway, which attracts 10,000 visitors every year.
In development since 2001, the fi nished attraction will represent the
cumulative efforts of the resident-run Seaton Visitor Centre Trust,
three local authorities and a number of generous donations from
the Heritage Lottery Fund. On completion, running of the centre will
be handed over to the Devon Wildlife Trust, a charitable organisation
dedicated to protecting the natural heritage of the county.
The Seaton Jurassic team hope to have the welcome area, cafe and shop
open by July ‘15 and the completed exhibition halls ready by Christmas.

FULL SERVICE RESUMEDW O R D S : R o s s P a c k m a n
While many European cities now offer trams as a convenient, environmentally friendly
method of transport, there are few that offer the opportunity to cruise sedately through
an internationally important wetland and Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
Seaton Tramway can trace its origins back to 1949, the Lancaster Electrical Company in
Barnet, North London and its tram enthusiast owner, Claude Lane. Rising from the ashes
of Beeching’s mass railway closures, Lane succeeded in purchasing the Seaton to Colyton
section and proceeded to ship what would become the tramway’s track system from
Eastbourne in East Sussex.
Sadly, Lane never saw the tramway completed, dying of a heart attack on the 2nd April 1971.
Allan Gardner took up the mantle as Managing Director and with assistance from staff and
volunteers alike, fi nally saw the full tramway route completed in 1980. From its humble
origins, the tramway has grown to encompass a fl eet of thirteen cars, all 1:2 replicas of
classic designs from British cities, including the only remaining tram from the former Exeter
system still in service.
Exceptional fl ooding on the evening of Valentine’s Day 2014 saw sections of the track bed
washed from beneath the tramway as the River Axe burst its banks and swept all before it.
Power supply was also affected and the riverside depot in Seaton was inundated with fl ood
water. This saw the Tramway forced to postpone their re-opening for the year, timed to coincide
with the school half-term holidays. A reduced service between Colyton and Colyford was
introduced while the half-mile section of damaged track was repaired, costing hundreds of
thousands of pounds and six weeks of lost trade.
Happily, on reopening, the Tramway saw a boost to visitor numbers, seeing in excess of the
90,000 visitors the Tramway attracts every year, eager to experience a slower mode of travel
and the chance to experience the wildlife of an internationally important wetland.

COLYTON’S HISTORICAL
PASTW O R D S : L u c i e S i m i c
Lying within an Area of Outstanding Natural
Beauty, Colyton is an historic medieval town set
in the Axe Valley, whose fortunes were based on
the rich wool trade of the 14th and 15th centuries.
The circular street arrangement is typically Saxon
and along its winding streets many interesting
buildings dating back to these times can be seen.
At the heart of the town is Market Place and St
Andrews Church, which dates back a thousand
years to Norman times. The large West Window is
a jewel, and the lantern tower, added in the 15th
century, is thought to be based on the Bruges
Cloth Hall Tower. There is an interesting range of
individual shops, owned and run by local people
who are happy to welcome you. Traditional inns
and tea shops offer a wide variety of refreshment
and food.
The Colyton Heritage Centre is located in the
historic Merchant’s House, in Market Place. This
house was once the home of a wealthy cloth
merchant and has many fi ne features including
an elegant decorative ceiling, Tudor fi replace and
medieval wall mural.
During the season there are exhibitions of local
interest, a gift shop, and a Family History Service
Point with local experts to help you with research.
History Walks are on a Thursday at 2pm beginning
April 2nd.
Part of the scenic walking route, the East Devon
Way, passes through Colyton as it follows the
lovely Coly River valley towards Farway. At Chantry
bridge, take a stroll through the meadows by the
side of the river where an abundance of bluebells,
orchids and aromatic wild garlic grow. Kingfi shers
can often be spotted and other inhabitants of the
riverbanks. The last remaining oak bark tannery
in England sits on the banks of the Coly River by
Chantry Bridge in Colyton.

and Team set about designing patterns that fi t and fl atter modern
curves. The elegantly packaged patterns come multi-sized from 4-20
(and ages 4-10 in the children’s range). They are simple enough for the
novice stitcher; vintage in style but cleverly cut so that you can wear
your creation everyday or indeed for a special occasion.
“I’ve made the Sweetheart & Blitz in printed cotton and
denim and I’m now feeling confi dent for a fancy fabric”.
Weekly classes, weekend workshops, after school textile clubs,
children’s parties and Hen parties all take place in the chic attic studio.
People come from all over the country, and indeed Europe, to seek out
Caroline’s wealth of sewing and design experience. During her two to
four day workshops which are suited to all from the complete novice to
the more experienced, not only do you receive a free pattern, you also
leave with new friends, fond memories and a frock that fi ts! oh and the
confi dence and knowledge to say:
“MADE IT MYSELF”
They have just launched 3 newbie Patterns: “Miss Maguire” a lovely
three piece.
And “Little Miss & Me” a range of across age groups patterns for adults,
children and teenagers! Starting with “Miss Dolly” and “Little Miss Dolly”.
