When shostakovich himself said of his Ninth Symphony, “Musicians will love to play it, and critics

will delight in blasting it,” he should have also said, “audiences will love listening to it.” His Ninth is the most Classical of his symphonies, making it a good match for the music of two of the greatest Classically-Romantic composers, brahms and Mendelssohn; especially the “heart’s jewel” that is Mendelssohn’s famous Violin Concerto.

3Pianist andrew von oeyen makes his VSO debut performing Mozart’s decadent and poignant Piano Concerto No. 22. After the overture to the story of the damned lover Don Giovanni, Tchaikovsky’s symphonic fantasy tells the story of another famous damned lover, Francesca da Rimini from Dante’s Inferno, in haunting, rapturous music.

The Musically speaking series takes the mystery out of the music, and makes you feel at home enjoying the same quality of classical composers and guest artists as you would find in Masterworks.

Conductors take you inside the music with informative, fascinating, sometimes surprising – and always entertaining – commentary from the podium about the composers and their music. Video screens on either side of the stage take you closer to the extraordinary musicians with close-ups of all the action.

Gustav holst’s extraordinary work, The Planets has forged a well-deserved place in the pantheon of great classical music. Describing the character of each of the seven planets known at the time (excluding Earth), The Planets is an astonishing composition that never fails to thrill audiences, and has informed many a science fiction movie soundtrack as well! Outstanding Vso Principal Flute christie reside performs nielsen’s beautiful Flute Concerto, and Vancouver audiences hear bramwell Tovey’s Three Jacobean Songs for the first time in concert. 5

One of America’s foremost pianists, Avery Fisher prize-winning anne-Marie McDermott performs Tchaikovsky’s other Piano Concerto. As powerful as its big brother, Tchaikovsky’s

Piano Concerto No. 2 is a revelation. And there is nothing like the Symphonic Dances from bernstein’s exciting West Side Story heard live.

1British cellist raphael Wallfisch performs richard strauss’s extraordinary work for cello and orchestra, Don Quixote. This piece is based on the novel, Don Quixote de la Mancha by Miguel Cervantes, and tells the famous story of the windmill-tilter and his faithful sidekick, Sancho Panza, in a series of beautiful and expressive musical episodes.2

One of the most critically-acclaimed violinists of her generation, Viviane hagner makes her VSO debut performing Glazunov’s brilliant Violin Concerto. bartók’s Dance Suite, one of his most popular works, was written to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the union of Buda and Pest into the city of Budapest, and kodaly’s exquisite Dances of Galanta movingly recall the composer’s childhood in what was then his northern Hungarian home town.

Vso concertmaster Dale barltrop has become an integral part of Vancouver’s music community, and his exceptional talent has become known to critics and audiences alike. He teams

up with another great VSO musician, assistant concertmaster nicholas Wright, in a performance of bach’s elegant Concerto for Two Violins, and leads the orchestra throughout this concert that focuses on beautiful music for strings.3

here’s a new festival in Vancouver’s Arts and Culture scene: The Vso's spring Festival!

A new annual fixture on the Festival calendar in late-March to early-April, the Vso spring Festival will feature a different composer or musical era each year, and launches in this 95th anniversary season with a four-concert focus on the lush, Romantic music of sergei rachmaninoff.

The Vso spring Festival features sensational Russian pianist alexander Gavrylyuk performing all five of Rachmaninoff’s works for piano and orchestra. The festival also features two famous orchestral arrangements of compositions for piano; music by composers who influenced Rachmaninoff; and four of Rachmaninoff’s orchestral masterpieces.

The Vso spring Festival includes Pre-concert Talks each night with Maestro bramwell Tovey, and Post-concert “Deconstructing rachmaninoff” discussions with alexander Gavrylyuk and Maestro Tovey.

EThe VSO’s inaugural international new Music Festival !

ach year, the Vso new Music Festival will focus on a Distinguished International Visiting Composer, and this inaugural festival will feature renowned Australian composer and violist, brett Dean. Now one of the most internationally performed composers of his generation, Dean’s music is championed by many of the leading conductors and orchestras worldwide. Principal Viola of the Berlin

Philharmonic for fourteen years, Dean will perform his Viola Concerto, while many of his other works will also be featured.

Guest performers at the festival will include the raschèr saxophone Quartet from Germany and Vancouver's acclaimed new music ensemble, standing Wave. Members of the VSO will perform in chamber music in addition to their usual Symphony roles.

Several BC composers will also be featured during the festival, including Jocelyn Morlock, Jennifer butler and Marcus Goddard, John oliver, and of course, the VSO’s own composer-in-residence edward Top. Vso Music Director bramwell Tovey will host each event, joined by edward Top.

elementary school concerts The VSO performs 12 concerts annually for students in Kindergarten through Grade 7. Up to 31,000 students from more than 400 schools and home school groups attend each season.

symphonic encounters A series of five open rehearsals offering secondary and post-secondary students an opportunity to go behind the scenes with the VSO.

all-access Pass The All-Access Pass offers full-time students and anyone 30 years of age or younger an opportunity to attend selected regular season concerts for only $15.

Vso connects Maestro Tovey, VSO musicians, and post-secondary music students visit elementary and secondary schools in six of Metro Vancouver’s school districts to support public music education programs.

Vso kids’ koncerts Kids’ Koncerts are fun-filled Sunday afternoons for children and their families. Please see page 19 for more details.

Tiny Tots This series features professional music educators Let Your Music Shine! with Lisa and Linda in their award-winning productions for the very young. Please see page 18 for more details.

Vso co-productions Committed to supporting the next generation of orchestral musicians by giving students an opportunity to perform alongside professional musicians, the VSO collaborates with youth bands and orchestras in the lower mainland, including the Vancouver Youth Symphony Orchestra.

clinics and Masterclasses VSO guest artists share their expertise with students at the Vancouver Academy of Music and UBC’s School of Music.

Jean coulthard readings This program gives emerging BC composers the opportunity to have their work played by the VSO.

Giving back The VSO supports numerous local charities through donations of ticket vouchers, which are used for their fundraising activities.

Musical encounters Five presentations for adults featuring Maestro Tovey, members of the orchestra, or guests from the music community.

education and community Partnerships The VSO maintains partnerships with the Coalition for Music Education in British Columbia, UBC's School of Music and Faculty of Education, the Vancouver Adacemy of Music, and the Saint James Music Academy. Through these partnerships, we aspire to support the growth and appreciation of symphonic music, and to advocate for outstanding music education in schools and community music organizations.

The VSO School of Music is a state-of-the-art community music school, located in the heart of downtown Vancouver directly next to the Orpheum Theatre.
