14 Season 2014/2015

Saturday, October 25, 8:00pmEddie ShawRecent 2014 Blues Hall of Fame inductee, Eddie Shaw continues to build upon his unparalleled career as a Chicago blues saxophonist/bandleader in a city where guitar, harmonica and piano players have long ruled the roost. A multiple Blues Music Award winner and perpetual nominee in the Instrumentalist — Horn category, Shaw has blown his industrial-strength sax with the likes of Howlin’ Wolf, Muddy Waters and Magic Sam. And with his Wolf Gang, he has racked up the most road mileage of all Chicago bands over the past four decades, crisscrossing the country from Maine, where his upbeat, high-energy blues is a particular favorite, to countless points south and west.

In 2012, working with some of Hampton Roads’ most accomplished blues musicians, Eddie released Eddie Shaw And The 757 Allstars “Still Riding High”, an album recapping his illustrious career as blues man extraordinaire that was nominated for “Best Traditional Blues Album” for the 2013 Blues Blast Awards. Eddie’s ties to the ‘757’ go beyond the album — he is a long-time supporter of the Fernando Jones Blues Camps, including our very own ‘Hampton Blues Kids’. Local group, Urban Hill Blues Band, will open the show.

Tuesday, October 28, 7:30pmThe Lady with All The Answers: The Ann Landers Story“Dear Ann Landers”...

For decades, renowned advice columnist Ann Landers answered countless letters from lovelorn teens, confused couples and a multitude of others in need of advice. This is a new one-woman play about the bubbly, frank and slightly eccentric writer that provides a compelling portrait of her.

Late on a 1975 night in Landers’ Chicago apartment, an ironic twist of events confronts her with a looming deadline for a column dealing with a new kind of heartbreak — her own. As she shares her struggles to complete the column with us, we learn as much about ourselves as we do about the wise, funny, no-nonsense woman whose daily dialogue with America helped shape the social and sexual landscapes of the last half-century.

16 Season 2014/2015

Sunday, November 2, 2:30pm The Laughter of Politics Just days before the historic mid-term congressional elections, we’ll all need a laugh. It’s only proper that the historic American Theatre should play host to Mark Russell and his political laugh-fest.

Long before Jon Stewart and Steven Colbert, there was Mark Russell, daring to joke and sing of the often absurd political process. He started in a little piano bar on Capitol Hill — right across from the lawmakers themselves. As he puts it, “I started at the bottom and managed to work my way down.” When he began he knew little about politics, but was an immediate hit because he could find humor in anything.

With impeccable timing, twinkling eyes and shock-of-recognition insights into American politics, Mark draws merriment from the pomposity of public life. Reading three or four newspapers a day allows him to constantly update his material. The result is that no two shows are ever identical. “I thrive on newspapers.” he frequently states. “And it looks like I’ll be thriving longer than them.” And his answer to the frequently asked question, “Did you have any writers?” was “Oh, yes...I had 535 writers. One hundred in the Senate and 435 in the House of Representatives.

Sunday, November 9, 2:30pm Sunday, January 11, 2:30pm ‘Perfessor’ Bill: Live Piano Accompaniment to Classic Silent FilmsHarpo Marx lasted just two weeks as a silent film pianist — and it’s no wonder. The poor fellow only knew two songs which he would rotate, speeding up or slowing down his fingers in hopes of fitting the music to the action on the screen. Luckily, not all players had such limited repertoires, and The American Theatre has invited the talented ‘Perfessor’ Bill to sit at our Steinway piano and do what he does best — improvise a score to great silent movie classics, on the fly. At the keyboard Bill conjures music with an appropriate mood, or with tempos that comment waggishly on the scenes, accentuating hairpin plot twists to play along.

Bill Edwards discovered ragtime music when he was 6-years-old, and hasn’t been able to leave it alone since. Learning initially from records by Paul Lingle, Frankie Carle and Lou Busch, he later discovered it was also available in print form, and started accumulating ragtime scores in his teens. His latest passion for the past decade has been the revival of silent movie piano performance. Every ‘Perfessor’ Bill show features classic silent movie shorts by silent legends such as Charles Chaplin, Harold Lloyd and Buster Keaton, as well as a section devoted to ragtime performances and audience sing-alongs. Perfect for all ages and a great re-introduction to the magic of silent film!

Sunday, December 14, 2:30pmIt’s a Wonderful Life: Live From WVL Radio Theatre It’s Christmas Eve in 1945, and only a handful of WVL Radio’s actors have braved the blizzard to perform that evening’s broadcast of It’s a Wonderful Life and keep the station afloat. This clever stage adaptation breathes new life into the poignant story of George Bailey and Bedford Falls. This 1940s “live broadcast” of Frank Capra’s beloved film takes us back to the Golden Age of Radio. This fresh new adaptation of the film is set in the fictional studio of WVL Radio Theatre on a cold, snowy winter night. Due to the blizzard, the professional voice actors are unable to get through, but the show must go on — so a small but intrepid band of employees manage to create the dozens of movie characters and scenes using just their voices and a sound effects table. This exquisitely detailed production is an uplifting story of struggle and triumph, and of the power of a community to weather financial storms. Audiences from Chicago to Miami have come to know and love this annual performance of It’s A Wonderful Life: Live From WVL Radio Theatre and we think you’ll love it, too.

20 Season 2014/2015

Wednesday, December 17, 7:00pm Vienna Boys Choir Vienna Boys Choir — the name alone conjures images of majestic holiday celebrations held around the globe. This year, the sonic celebration takes place at The American Theatre. Come alone, or with the special people in your life, to experience the soaring voices and exquisite vocal discipline of the Vienna Boys Choir, in an evening sure to lift your spirits and provide a brief but glorious rest from the hustle and bustle of what we know as ‘the most wonderful time of the year’. The performance starts early — because the boys need to get to bed at a reasonable hour — but that makes the event perfect for students as well!

Boys have been singing at the court in Vienna since the 14th century. In 1498, more than half a millennium ago, Holy Roman Emperor Maximilian I moved his court and his court musicians to Vienna. Until 1918, the choir sang exclusively for the imperial court, at mass, concerts and private functions, and on state occasions.

Today there are approximately 100 choristers between the ages of ten and fourteen, divided into four touring choirs. The four choirs give around 300 concerts and performances each year in front of almost half a million people. Each group spends nine to eleven weeks of the school year on tour. They visit virtually all European countries, and they are frequent guests in Asia, Australia and the Americas.

Tuesday, January 13, 7:30pm Wellington International Ukulele Orchestra Renowned for their winning combination of charming Kiwi humour, their disarmingly small ukuleles, and sublime musicality, the Wellington International Ukulele Orchestra is one of the world’s great modern ukulele acts. The wildly popular New Zealand ensemble, armed with high-octane ukulele solos, heavenly harmonies and outrageous costumes, create instant joy and lasting magic wherever they go. Their comedic banter is spontaneous, and when they burst into song, the sweet sounds can silence a room in a nanosecond, or bring a crowd of thousands to their feet.

Delighting audiences of all ages, the orchestra’s signature sound features many types of ukuleles, a double bass and a host of gorgeous voices performing harmonious and hilarious renditions of modern and traditional tunes. The Wellington International Ukulele Orchestra presents the ukulele as it’s never been played before, and features songs made famous by artists such as Justin Timberlake, Dolly Parton, Elvis, The Beatles, Hall and Oates, Cyndi Lauper, Prince, Kenny Rogers and Kings of Leon, alongside tunes from the South Pacific, packaged into a spectacular, unmissable funfest.

22 Season 2014/2015

Saturday, January 17, 8:00pm Company Stefanie Batten Bland Dance Stefanie Batten Bland, recently named 2014 Joffrey Ballet “Choreographer of Color” recipient, has family roots that are a mix of Creole, African American, Native American and Scots-Irish. She has lived in three countries, speaks four languages and created her dance troupe, Company Stefanie Batten Bland, in 2008 in France so that she might better investigate the human condition and our relationship within the natural world. The troupe has performed live and via dance cinema throughout Europe, Asia, Africa and the States.

Stefanie’s choreographic vision of contemporary dance — a vision recognized as a 2010 Baryshnikov Arts Center/Jerome Robbins NEW Fellow and 2011/12 Cambridge Who’s Who! of Professionals and Entrepreneurs — redefines community by illustrating the synergy that arises when interdisciplinary artists from varied backgrounds and cultures collide. Her works are based in dance, with a strong installation component which allows futuristic worlds to take place in space and time. Stephanie mixes European subtlety and American ardor to investigate physical notions of community, adding her own layer of dance to Mary Batten and Ed Bland’s artistic legacy of music and writing.

Friday, January 30, 8:00pm Celtic Fiddle FestivalCeltic Fiddle Festival mark twenty years of joyful, compelling, and powerful music with their sixth recording, Live in Brittany. Described as “three sensational fiddlers from three distinct Celtic traditions” by the Boston Herald, the group features Kevin Burke, a giant of Irish music; renowned fiddler Christian Lemaître (Kornog) from Brittany, France; and sensational young Quebecois musician André Brunet (De Temps Antan, La Bottine Souriante). Called “three of the finest folk violinists anywhere” by The Washington Post, Celtic Fiddle Festival celebrates the violin in all its globe-trotting variations.

Along with acclaimed guitarist Nicolas Quemener from Brittany, the quartet combines their talents, musical traditions, and spontaneous humor for an evening of dazzling energy and subtle grace. In concert, each artist plays a solo set, showcasing his individual musical styles and traditions, followed by a collaborative set featuring all four musicians. Together, they play with such relentless precision and fire that the tunes transcend all cultural and geographical barriers, leaving the audience with a memorable musical experience.

Tuesday, February 3, 7:30pm The International Guitar Night The International Guitar Night (IGN) brings together the world’s foremost acoustic guitarists to perform their latest original compositions and exchange musical ideas in a public concert setting. Each tour, IGN founder Brian Gore invites a new cast of guitar luminaries to join him for special evenings of solos, duets and quartets that highlight the virtuosity and diversity within the world of acoustic guitar.

For the 2015 North American tour, Brian Gore will be joined by classical innovator and fellow Californian Andrew York, Brazilian jazz master Diego Figueiredo and contemporary French-Canadian steel string icon Erik Mongrain. Andrew, returning to The American Theatre after last season’s sizzling show with Alex de Grassi, is a Grammy winner both for his work with the Los Angeles Guitar Quartet and for his own brilliant compositions. Diego is one of the most sought-after jazz artists in the United Sates and around the world, and Erik is among the leading exponents using tapping and percussion to enhance his melodies. Thursday, February 5, 7:30pmWalnut Street Theatre presents: A Life in the Theatre The acclaimed Walnut Street Theatre company returns to The American Theatre with this funny and touching behind-the-scenes peek at the challenge of actors battling to share both the spotlight and a dressing room. A Life in the Theatre follows two actors in a repertory company — Robert, an older experienced performer and John, a newcomer. John at first welcomes Robert’s guidance, but soon overshadows his mentor. From rehearsals to reprisals, from ego trips to acting tips, the play gives a glimpse into the complex relationship that develops as the torch is passed from one generation to the next – a passing that wavers from love and mutual respect to impatience and resentment.

David Mamet is the Pulitzer Prize author of some of the most important plays of our time, including American Buffalo, Glengarry Glen Ross, Oleanna, and Speed-the-Plow. He has received multiple Oscar nominations for his screenplays and is widely considered one of the most influential American writers of his generation. He was inspired to write A Life in the Theatre by his own experiences backstage as an actor. The New Yorker declared, ‘‘Mr. Mamet has written—in gentle ridicule; in jokes, broad and tiny; and in comedy, high and low—a love letter to the theatre. It is quite a feat, and he has pulled it off.’’

A Life in the Theatre is a delightful theatrical experience for anyone who loves actors and the theater.

Tuesday, February 10, 7:30pm Wednesday, February 11, 7:30pm Arlo Guthrie: 50th Anniversary of ‘Alice’s Restaurant’This legendary folk singer-songwriter returns to the The American Theatre to commemorate the 50th anniversary of his iconic song, “Alice’s Restaurant.” When a young Arlo, son of renowned folk legend Woody Guthrie, was arrested for littering on Thanksgiving Day back in 1965, he couldn’t know that it would launch his career and turn him into a counterculture hero. It ultimately helped spark an entire generation to embrace social activism. Guthrie charmed Hampton audiences with his witty stories, amusing anecdotes, and folk favorites throughout his many appearances here, and this concert promises even more with a brand new program.

34 Season 2014/2015

Saturday, March 14, 8:00pmDana Leong TrioComposer, cellist and trombonist Dana Leong fuses jazz, classical and pop to create a signature boundless sound. Often referred to as a “hi-def Yo-Yo Ma,” Dana’s pioneering collage of musical styles has garnered critical acclaim and wowed audiences around the world. Dana Leong Trio, featuring Dana (cello/trombone/laptop), John Shannon (guitar) and DJ Icewater (turntables), is the latest incarnation of Dana’s ever-expansive compositions, bringing together an exciting electro-acoustic blend of jazz, classical and pop.

Dana’s sound is a fusion of computerized electronic hip-hop funk rhythms and rock propulsions. While playing the cello or trombone, Dana also uses his laptop onstage to integrate electronic soundscapes. In 2012 he was part of the cast of Paquito D’Rivera’s 2x Grammy Winning album “The Panamercana Orchestra” and he’s collaborated, performed, and produced for renowned artists such as Christian McBride, Dafnis Prieto, Henry Threadgill, Ray Charles, Barry White, Kanye West, Wynton Marsalis, Bjork, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Yoko Ono, and Lila Downs, as well as electronic music legends DJ A-Trak and DJ Qbert.

Dana Leong is a prodigious anomaly of the highest order. At the age of 1, Dana was already sitting at the piano on a regular basis. He was on an intense traditional path towards the classical music arena, and by the age of 8, Dana was already performing and competing internationally on the cello and trombone. Dana won an audition and performed with the Grammy High School All Stars and Boyz II Men. “After seeing the magnitude of New York City and the wonderful impact these artists had, I wanted to be a musician for life,” he says.

It is a rare occurrence when one person is equally successful in two completely different arenas. Dana Leong is remarkably active as both a renowned cellist and a powerful and articulate trombonist, having learned both instruments at an early age under the tutelage of his mother Sumi Nagasawa. Dana Leong now resides in New York City.

Sunday, March 15, 2:30pmPeter Yarrow: An Afternoon of Conversation & Song Peter’s talents as a creative artist — both with Peter, Paul & Mary and as a solo performer — are frequently directed at using music to convey a message of humanity and caring. His gift for songwriting has produced some of the most moving songs Peter, Paul & Mary have recorded, including “Puff, the Magic Dragon,” “Day is Done,” “Light One Candle,” and “The Great Mandala.” As a member of the renowned musical trio, he has earned many gold and platinum albums, and has been awarded numerous Grammys and been nominated for several more. More important to Peter, however, is the acknowledgment of the central role that he and his partners have played in bringing the folk renaissance of the 1960s to the hearts and homes of the American public.

“We’re part of a long train ride,” is the way Peter Yarrow visualizes the many events that have highlighted a career spanning more than four decades. With characteristic care, Yarrow places the success he’s had within a greater context, seeing his accomplishments as part of a tradition to be credited and carried on. “When I was in high school,” he recalls, “I heard The Weavers’ concert at Carnegie Hall where they sang songs such as ‘If I Had a Hammer,’ and ‘Wasn’t That a Time.’ It was inspiring, and it showed me the extraordinary effect that music of conscience can have.”

36 Season 2014/2015

Saturday, April 11, 8:00pmLovesick Blues: The Life and Music of Hank Williams, Sr.Lovesick Blues is a 90-minute musical theatre event which chronicles the significant phases of America’s most influential singer-songwriter as he drives his promising career to an early end. A narrator begins with Williams’ teenage years in post-Depression Alabama and brings the tale to his quiet death in 1953. The story is underscored by twenty hit songs wrapped tightly around Williams’ major biographical events. Robbie Limon gives an award-winning characterization of Williams’ life. He is supported on stage by a classic country-string quartet. All songs are full length renditions using instrumentation and arrangements as recorded throughout the 1940s. String bass and guitar are blended with the haunting sounds of pedal steel and fiddle. The show also features a ‘long-lost’ song Williams planned to record but missed the opportunity due to his untimely death. Costume changes illustrate the evolution of Williams’ career from road-side honky-tonks, AM radio’s ‘Louisiana Hayride’ and the ‘Old Dominion Barn Dance’, to his appearances on ‘The Grand Ol’ Opry’. The audience experience is intimate and personal. Truly, there are moments when you will believe it is 1949 and Hank is singing just for you. ‘Lovesick Blues’ has satisfied long term fans of Hank Williams, Sr. and has certainly made new fans with each performance. Robbie Limon’s physical appearance and vocal interpretations are simply uncanny. One reviewer has noted, “This is as close anyone will ever get to seeing and hearing Hank again”.

Saturday, April 18, 8:00pmThe Steep Canyon Rangers These days, it’s hard to talk about the Steep Canyon Rangers without mentioning Steve Martin. After meeting at a party and connecting immediately, Martin invited the band to tour and record with him. Their 2011 collaboration Rare Bird Alert was nominated for a Grammy, and later that year, they won IBMA’s Entertainer of the Year Award.

What has emerged is a real collaboration of seven consummate musicians creating music that they are passionate about, and blending it with humor to form a sophisticated show. They are proud that it has exposed legions of new fans to the bluegrass genre. Their partnership has stretched the Steep Canyon Rangers musically, and definitely broadened their horizons and experiences, including recent appearances on Austin City Limits, the Late Show with David Letterman, and the Today Show, and performances at Carnegie Hall, the Grand Ole Opry, MerleFest, Neil Young’s Bridge School Benefit, as well as their own Mountain Song festival and Mountain Song at Sea cruise.

The release of Tell the Ones I Love finds the Steep Canyon Rangers in a unique situation, and one they don’t take lightly: “It took a lot of work for us to nose our way into the bluegrass world and become a de facto representative,” Sharp acknowledges, “and we think it’s a real responsibility.” With this new record, “we can be a bridge between the bluegrass crowd and a wider audience that may not be die-hard bluegrass fans.” Yet.

Saturday, April 25, 8:00pm The Ahn TrioHailed as “exacting and exciting musicians” by the LA Times, the three sisters of the Ahn Trio (Lucia on the piano, Angella on the violin, and Maria on the cello) have earned a distinguished reputation for embracing 21st century classical music with their unique style and innovative collaborations. The Ahn sisters were born in Seoul, Korea, and educated at the Juilliard School in New York City. Reflecting the two cultures they grew up in, the Trio brings a new energy and excitement to the chamber music world. Such luminary composers as Michael Nyman, Maurice Jarre, Pat Metheny, Paul Schoenfield, Mark O’ Connor, Kenji Bunch, Nikolai Kapustin, and Paul Chihara have written works for them.

Dedicated to educating and inspiring the next generation of musicians, the Ahns are passionate about sharing their knowledge. Angella is a Professor of Violin and Viola at Montana State University, in Bozeman, MT. Maria teaches cello and is the head of the String Department at the Harlem School of the Arts in NYC. Lucia has a growing private studio. They hold master classes and workshops across the United States and around the world. Whether they are performing in Vienna’s Musikverein, Buenos Aires’ Teatro Colon, New York’s Lincoln Center, Leipzig’s Gewandhaus, Beijing’s Concert Hall, or Istanbul’s Aya Irini in Topkapi Palace, they share their innovative spirit and ever-evolving vision of music. In 2011, President Obama invited the Ahn Trio to perform at the White House for a State Dinner honoring South Korea.

The trio’s latest CD, “Lullaby for My Favorite Insomniac” (released by Sony) is a showcase of their fearless creativity, and made No. 8 on the Billboard Charts for 26 weeks in the Classical album category.

Saturday, May 2, 8:00pmNai-Ni Chen Dance CompanyA gorgeous dance work integrating trance, rhythmic breathing and spiral motion, Whirlwind was inspired by Nai-Ni Chen’s personal journey along the Silk Road. Delving into the ancient mysteries of the old Asiatic cultures, the dance will transport the audience out of the driven, jangling clamor of modern life to ponder the simplicity and spiritual richness of another place and time. Four-time Grammy award-winning composer Glen Velez has created a magical tapestry of sound, evoking the Eastern realms with music that is at once seductive and soulful with swaying rhythms, delicate dreamlike themes, mystic chanting and bursts of dynamic — almost primitive — energy. This visual feast is enhanced through the beautiful and exotic art work by award winning artist Jayanthi Moorthy.

Nai-Ni Chen comes from a rich dance tradition. She was a renowned traditional dancer in the Republic of China and served on several ambassadorial culture missions to nineteen countries around the world. An early member of the Cloud Gate Dance Theater in Taiwan, she graduated from the Chinese Cultural University in 1982 and came to America to seek her own voice in the world of contemporary dance. Since the inception of her Company in 1988, Ms. Chen has created a wide-ranging repertory from dances that originated thousands of years ago to highly abstract, modern works. She has received a two-year Choreographer’s Fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts, and is also a three time recipient of the Choreographer’s Fellowship from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts.

Saturday, May 9, 8:00pmJudy CollinsThe American Theatre is pleased to welcome Judy Collins. Esteemed for her imaginative interpretations of traditional and contemporary folk standards and her own poetically poignant original compositions, Judy has inspired audiences with sublime vocals, boldly vulnerable songwriting, personal life triumphs, and a firm commitment to social activism. In the 1960s, she evoked both the idealism and steely determination of a generation united against social and environmental injustices. Five decades later, her luminescent presence shines brightly as new generations bask in the glow of her iconic 50-album body of work, and take inspiration from her spiritual discipline that let her thrive in the music industry for half a century.

Her stunning rendition of Joni Mitchell’s “Both Sides Now” from her landmark 1967 album, Wildflowers, has been entered into the Grammy Hall of Fame. Judy’s dreamy and sweetly intimate version of “Send in the Clowns,” a ballad written by Stephen Sondheim for the Broadway musical A Little Night Music, won “Song of the Year” at the 1975 Grammy Awards. She’s garnered several top-ten hits gold- and platinum-selling albums. Recently, contemporary and classic artists such as Rufus Wainwright, Shawn Colvin, Arlo Gutherie, Joan Baez, and Leonard Cohen honored her legacy with the album Born to the Breed.

Saturday, February 14, 2015 2:30pm Mad River Theatre Works: Freedom Bound

Our talented friends from Mad River Theater Works return to present Freedom Bound, an original play with music that tells the tale of the most important incident in the history of the Underground Railroad in Ohio. The show follows the story of Addison White, a slave who escaped from Kentucky and traveled the Railroad north to the small town of Mechanicsburg, OH. There, he was befriended by a farmer named Udney Hyde. He lived in Hyde’s barn, working for his meals by day and learning to read and write with the help of Hyde’s daughter, Amanda, by night. Hyde was a suspected abolitionist, however, and it was not

long before Addison was discovered by his former Master. Federal marshals surrounded Hyde’s cabin in the middle of the night. They were prepared to arrest Addison and return him to slavery, but over 100 citizens from Mechanicsburg confronted the marshals and demanded that they set Addison free. Freedom Bound uses drama and music, as well as riddles and rhyme, to create characters that emerge from the past and bring the Underground Railroad to life right before your eyes.

Saturday, December 13, 2014 11am & 2pm Theatre IV: Beatrix Potter’s “The Tailor of Gloucester” What a treat it is to discover a holiday classic by Beatrix Potter. When a poppycock mayor orders a cherry-colored coat for his Christmas wedding, the poor Tailor of Gloucester works his fingers to the bone. All goes well until the tailor realizes he lacks the piece of twisted silk needed to sew on the final button. He gives his last coin to Simpkin, his faithful pet cat, confident that he will set out into the snow to purchase the much-needed “twist.” But it is Christmas Eve, that one blessed night when animals are granted the gift of speech. And so, before story’s end, we hear not only from Simpkin, but also from all of the mice he has trapped beneath teacups for his holiday feast—well-dressed mice that have benefited for years from the tailor’s elegant scraps. Natural enemies become steadfast friends, and all work together to complete a coat that leaves the bedazzled Mayor—and Simpkin and his mice—speechless for a miraculously happy ending on Christmas Day.

October 25 – December 7, 2014 Small Works: Miniatures by Tidewater Artists In organizing this exhibition, two hundred Hampton Roads artists were challenged to create artworks less than twenty square inches. Artists working in two dimensional media created works no larger than four inch by five inch, for example; while three dimensional works fit within a 4 ½ inch cube. The resulting exhibition includes over 300 pieces in all media, including drawing, painting, printmaking, watercolor, photography, sculpture, jewelry, ceramics, fiber, glass and more. Gallery Manager James Warwick Jones served as Curator for the exhibition and an independent judge selected awards of First, Second and Third Place, five Awards of Merit, and ten Honorable Mentions.

56 Season 2014/2015

December 13, 2014 – January 25, 2015 Fluid Variations: Recent Works in Glass by Clay McGlamory Fluid Variations is a solo exhibition of new works by Clay McGlamory in a variety of glass techniques, including vitreous enamel screenprinting, fusing, mixed media, luminous tubing and installation. The imagery for these works comes from two sources: water in various states and forms, and words, primarily graffiti scratched into trees, translated from photographs taken during walks in the woods. Both create alluring patterns that when layered have a beautiful complexity which is further compounded by the layering of colors and panels of glass during the fusing and printing processes. Subtle transparent inks and layers of glass combine with dominant opaque color designs creating optically energized works that will stimulate the viewer’s optic nerves. Also on exhibit is “Peninsula Glass Guild 27th Annual Juried Exhibition”.

May 9 – June 21, 2015 A Journey from Realism to Abstract and Non-Objective Art This survey will lead the viewer on a journey from photo realism, painterly style, and expressionism to abstract and non-objective art. In all of these diverse approaches, artists use a visual language of form, color, line and the other elements and principles of design to create a composition. The content may be based on natural observation, realistic rendering and illusionism for a depiction of our surroundings. In Western art, from the renaissance to impressionism, this tradition of naturalistic rendering to depict our world was the dominant motif. At the beginning of the 20th century, Pablo Picasso, Georges Braque and others developed an abstract approach to create a new direction in art, partially influenced by those qualities in ethnocentric art. Soon after, Wassily Kandinsky and other artists began creating art without any reference to the reality of the world around them. Whatever the idiom, artists are expressing their personal vision, feelings, ideas and sensibilities.

This group exhibition features artworks in all media by artists with a regional connection, working from realism to abstraction to non-objective traditions.

60 Season 2014/2015

At The Charles H. Taylor Arts Center, we believe the best way to keep the arts in your life is by creating art throughout your life. Our educational programs allow visitors and students to broaden their understanding and appreciation of art by interacting with art, artists, and instructors, while expressing themselves through the creation of their own artwork.

The Arts Center offers approximately 20 classes in various media for adults and children throughout the year on a quarterly basis. These include drawing, watercolor, painting, photography, yoga and other media. Both one day workshops and multi-week class sessions are available. During the summer, the center offers week long programs for children in a diverse range of mediums.

In addition to our changing exhibitions and quarterly art classes, the Arts Center also offers related programs during the year, including:

Hampton Arts League (HAL) is a membership organization of approximately 325 regional artists which usually meets on the third Sunday of each month at 2:30 pm. Programs include an annual Open Members Exhibition, monthly meetings with a program — such as a demonstration or gallery talk of interest to artists — discounts for classes and other programs, emails about items of interest and our Tuesday Morning Painters group. Artists may join by completing the membership form and paying a modest annual fee. Contact CHTAC at 727-1490 to receive the membership form.

Tuesday Morning Painters is an informal group of HAL members which meets in our studio every Tuesday morning from 9:30am to 12:30pm to draw and paint without formal instruction and to socialize.

Peninsula Watermedia Society is a membership organization of approximately 70 watermedia artists which usually meets on the fourth Sunday of the month at 2:30 pm. For more information, please visit: http://www.pwsva.org/

Poetry Inspired by Art Events offer area poets the opportunity to write a poem inspired by one of the artworks in an exhibition and participate in a poetry reading scheduled near the closing date of the exhibition. Poems are posted next to the related artworks, or available in notebooks in the galleries.

Plein Air Painting Events are hosted once in the fall and again in the spring, inviting artists to create landscape paintings at sites around

Hampton, show them at a “wet paint” sale and compete for cash awards, selected by the participants.

Bus Trips to visit Washington DC, Richmond or other city art museums are sponsored in the fall and spring. Trips afford participants the opportunity to visit major art museums and special exhibitions in the region, while leaving the driving to us.
