Recamunda Germany, Singapore universities tie up with BU for STEP program Four contenders are being evaluated for the position as eighth president of Bicol University: Dr. Domingo E. Angeles, UPLB Dean of the College of Agriculture; Dr. Arnulfo M. Mascariñas, BU Research and Development Center Director; Dr. Helen M. Llenaresas, BU Vice President for Academic Affairs; and Dr. Amelia A. Dorosan, BU Vice President for Administration. They were the only applicants to submit proper requirements by the cut-off date, January 12, 2015. Public presentation and open forum were held on the morning of January 26 at the Bicol University Amphitheatre, and interview followed in the afternoon at The Oriental Hotel, Legazpi City. During the public presentation, the candidates discussed their vision and plans for the university for the next four years. During the open forum, a Resource speakers and facilitators from Luephana University, Germany, the National University of Singapore, and UNESCO carried out the Student Training for Entrepreneurial Promotion (STEP) “Train the Trainers” on January 20 to 22, at the STEP/P3 New Year always spells new hopes and aspirations. I have but a little over two months to the end of my term as the seventh president of Bicol University, but it doesn’t keep me from hoping and dreaming more for this beloved university. As we start this new year, let us have the resolve to maintain and surpass what we have achieved so far. We hope for no less than the best. Continue to move as one, to be the ONE!

Membership of the Bataan Peninsula State University (BPSU) held on January 30 at the Crystal Ballroom, Crown Royale Hotel, City of Balanga, Bataan. President Lauraya, in her speech, shared her journey before and during her presidency. She also shared BU’s motto, “Let us move as one to be the ONE,” emphasizing that the needs

of the faculty, non-teaching staff, and students should be provided immediatelyas one way of showing support to one’s constituents. She also shared BU’s storytowards being an ISO accredited institution, admitting that it was not easy, but that with the cooperation of all the departments it was made possible.(Jona V. Bicol University officials gathered for the 2015 Opening Meeting at Casa Lorenzo, Tagas, Daraga, on January 7, as a fitting start to the new year. Team-building activities meant to strengthen the camaraderie among the officials were facilitated by Prof. Samuel C. Bobiles, Director of the Global Linkage Office @ BU (GLO@BU) as one of the highlights of the event. The newly-appointed University Budget Officer,

Ms. Crisanta Botin, presented the financial report in behalf ofAtty. Lloyd Casasis, Chief Administrative Officer for Finance. BU President Fay M.

Lauraya, who is ending her term on March 8 of this year, also took the opportunity to give a farewell message to the officials of her

administration, and present them with greeting out cards with her personal dedication to them.

Officials of Batangas State University led by their president, Dr. Tirso Ronquillo, came to Bicol University on January 14 for a benchmarking opportunity.BU President Fay M. Lauraya and other BU Officials shared with them the university’s organizational framework and quality management system, as well as its profile and best practices in instruction, research, and extension.

ESGP-PA Grantees conduct Planning Workshop

A P l a n n i n g -W o r k s h o p for the M a rg i n a l i z e d E x p a n d e d S t u d e n t s ’ G r a n t - i n - A i d Program for Poverty Alleviation (ESGP-PA) student grantees and students with special needs was conducted by the Bicol University Office of Student Services on January 23 to 24 at the Patio de San Jose, Malilipot, Albay. The eventaimed to come up with

intervening programs for the ESPG-PA grantees who have been identified as belonging to the marginalized group, including students with special needs, in order to address their difficulties and challenges they face especially in their academic life.

Lauraya keynotes Battle of Legazpi 115th Anniversary

Dr. Fay Lea Patria M. Lauraya, Bicol University president, keynotedthe celebration of the 115th anniversary of the Battle of Legazpi last January 23 which wasorganized by the Legazpi City Mayor’s office.

The event started with a foot parade to the monument followed by the opening program, during which Dr. Lauraya and City Mayor Noel Rosal led the singing of the Philippine National Anthem and the blessing of the renovated monument located at the

center of Legazpi where the bridge of Legazpi once stood. Dr. Lauraya, in her speech that followed, emphasized the importance of remembering and commemorating the different historical events that took place in the province. After her message,

participants placed flowers in the monument to pay tribute to the soldiers who fought in the battle. Participants included students and teachers from the different educational institutions, and officials and employees of government offices in Legazpi City.The Battle of Legazpi happened during the American occupation in the Philippines in 1900. Bicol University College of Science (BUCS). Ms. Kim Marie Bischoff and Dr. Michael Frese of Luephana University, Germany; Mr. Henry Jacob of the National University of Singapore; and Ms. Kathrin Wolf of theUnited Nations Educational,

Scientific and Cultural O r g a n i z a t i o n ( U N E S C O ) trained prospective trainers for the program, in order to jumpstart a research in Bicol University, in collaboration with their respective institutions. The STEP training

was first implemented and scientifically evaluated in 2009 at the Makerere University and the Uganda Christian University in Kampala, Uganda. The resultant research has been published and is currently in press in the journal Academy of Management. STEP or Student Training for Entrepreneurial Promotion is a practical, comprehensive and rigorously action-oriented training that has been proven to be an effective intervention to provide entrepreneurial training to non-business course students. At present, its adaptation in Bicol University is being proposed

in the form of a research. This “Train the Trainers” is one of the preparatory activities before the STEP Research can be implemented in the university. Its implementation is to be spearheaded by the Entrepreneurship Department of BUCollege of Business, Economics, and Management (BUCBEM), and is a partnership among Bicol University, Leuphana University of Luneberg, Germany, the National University of Singapore, andUNESCO. Together with a faculty member of Thailand’s Mahasarakam University, Dr. Wajuppa Tossa, Prof. Ramil C. Chavenia conducted a workshop session titled, “Music, Poetry, and Storytelling” on January 19 to 24 and the “ASEAN Folktales and Storytelling for ASEAN Readiness” on January 24-25 in the Third International Storytelling Festival in Thailand.

NSTP celebrates 13th anniversary

Dr. Fay Lea Patria M. Lauraya, BU President, and Dr. Helen Llenaresas, VP for Academic Affairs,

attended the BU National Service Training Program celebration of its 13th anniversary last January 23, at the BUCollege of Science Auditorium.During the celebration, th e different NSTP coordinators of each college played a 3-minute video presentation of their activities, achievements, and recognitions during the Lauraya administration. Dr. Lauraya, during her

speech,congratulated the program officials for their outstanding performances and gave her insights on the upcoming challenges/changesto NSTP due to the government’s implementation of the K-12 program. Prof. Rowena F. Zoilo, NSTP Director, thanked the president for her support to the program through the years.

BU ESC conducts Barangay Health Workshop with DOH

Bicol University Extension Services Center partners with the Department of Health to conduct barangay health workshops for selected barangays in Albay and Sorsogon from January to April. The participants of the workshops are barangay officials, assigned kagawads in health, barangay midwives, nurses, and doctors. The event aims to guide the participating barangays to in formulating their barangay health action plans.

from the audience, which they alone answered.Results of the evaluation by the Search Committee will be forwarded to the Board of Regents for deliberation and voting during the next Board Meeting.
