La RamblaSouth of Placa de Catalyuna, La Rambla becomes a

wide pedestrian avenue with narrow vehicle lanes on either side. Though travelers on foot dominate the street, the treatment and atmosphere of the space

feels very distinct from Passeig de Sant Joan. Market stalls and café seating supplants playgrounds and

open fields. Clothing stores and food vendors replace the residences in the neighboring buildings. The

boundary between public and private space is far more permeable; Thousands of pedestrians step off the

streetscape into the shops at its end.

A comprehensive study of plaited textiles informed the renovation of the 6th district Federal Reserve Bank’s facade and underused, adjacent public space. By replacing the sheer, marble facade with a curving glass curtain wall and a steel sunshade/canopy, the east face of the bank seems less imposing, simultaneously allowing the greenspace to become more active as a circulation corridor and recreational space.

Excerpts from “Designing Transportation Environments”Summer 2013 Study AbroadMichael Gamble, Richard Dagenhart, Marc Cottle, Jude LeBlanc

Barcelona, Amsterdam, and Berlin all feature strong, distinct transportation networks. Travel comes with relative ease in all three urban environments. One could surely navigate each city using any mode of transportation, but the unique conditions in each city isolate a single mode as more suited to the environment than any other.

Barcelona’s streets cater to travelers on foot with wide pedestrian medians, lines of trees, and few lanes of vehicle traffic. Amsterdam’s streets clearly define the boundaries between modes of transportation, putting an emphasis on separate cycling lanes. Berlin’s streets ease vehicle travel with wide lanes, unoccupied medians, and the clear distinction between pedestrian and vehicle space.

In each of these three cities, designers have laid out the streetscapes in a style conducive to a specific form of transportation. Based on the preexisting conditions, they made broad moves and shaped minute details that play equal roles in gentrifying an environment of mobility.

Framed Views played a vital role in the design of a media center on the wooded Oxford campus of Emory University. The building is an experience shaped by visual perception, both inside and out.

From the two diagonal approaches, the roofline and column arrangement mimic the neighboring Greek revival structures built over a century ago.

The main unobstructed views to the site approach at oblique angles to the “front” of the proposed building, calling for an unorthodox entrance solution. On the ground level two public entries address the approaching footpath perpendicularly, while the floor above cantilevers out to a point, providing cover for the entry plazas below.

The terracotta facade varies in density based on the program behind it. Public spaces such as the reading room benefit from the widening of the gaps seen in the corners of the second floor.

Page 15: Sean Sims Undergraduate Portfolio

Spaces such as the theater or restrooms are protected from unwanted views and sunlight with a more tightly arranged facade. The natural coloring of the material lends itself nicely to a campus scattered with historical, red brick buildings.

Courthouses facilitate the most direct interaction between the United States Federal Government and its governed people. This project navigates the complex safety requirements of a federal building while simultaneously opening itself up maximum access from the public realm.

Page 17: Sean Sims Undergraduate Portfolio

The circulation networks plays a key role in the security of the program. Rather than allowing these restrictions to limit public access, the public is provided a continuous route through the courthouse. The figure-eight circuit directly accesses the courtrooms and all other publicly accessible program.

A series of diagrammatic physical models expresses the development of this system from its early, radial stages, to the final, orthogonal form. The early designs gave equal importance to the public (yellow) and restricted (blue) paths, but eventually the public circuit became spatially dominant.

A Tribe Called Quest released their critically acclaimed second album, The Low End Theory, in 1991. The music they created blended the smooth rhythms of jazz with the drums and lyrics of hip hop. Twenty-two years after its release, The Low End Theory’s revolutionary sound is seen in many genres of music.

Though the songs have been around longer than I have, this album and this group have had a profound effect on my musical, as well as my personal identity. Through my work, I want to express my appreciation for the creation and experience of the album.

Sigurd Lewerentz’s use of elevation change and seclusion to create distinct environments at Skogskyrkogården (The woodland Cemetery) outside of Stockholm informed the transition from city to gallery. The descent from street level culminates in a introverted courtyard, at the most visually and audibly secluded moment on the site.

Transitions between programmatic grouping became vital to the experience of the project. Here visitors begin a swift descent from street level, accompanied by rushing water on either side, before slowing their pace as the stairs lengthen near the lobby.

The Strand theater has provided a stage for live performance in Marrietta for over 75 years, but the design limits progression in an era of digital entertainment. A more variable program entertains the public at all times, not just during scheduled events.

The triangular courtyard extends the public space in the adjacent square directly onto the site. The space acts as a relaxing park space during the day, but can host outdoor screenings or live performances in the evenings.

The ground plane folds up around the Eastern boundary of the courtyard in the form of a grandiose ramp. The ramp acts as both circulation and program depending on the event. The expression of folding is mirrored across the street in the form of a balcony installation in the park.

These open spaces serve a variety of functions and can virtually transform through the use of digital projection technology.

The upper level and ramps hold exhibitions, banquets, parties, gala, film screenings, and smaller live performances.
