I I NEXT DEAR FAMILIES An essential part of strategic planning for the following school year is a robust and informative course counselling process. The course selection process, in particular for the senior years, is critical to ensure student choice is maximised through the strategic staffing and resourcing of the school timetable. This year’s course selection day held on August 29 was a huge success, with about 180 appointments throughout the day. Many parents voiced their appreciation of the process and time being given to discuss their child’s future. The day ran incredibly smoothly and looked so professional and well planned in the Library. I would like to collectively thank the whole school community, as everyone played a role. Several ATSI students from our school have been participating in an off-site program called Many Clans; One Mob where they learn the cultural history and skills of outrigging. The program is run by Adelaide Outriggers Club and students focus on the skills of water safety, teamwork, cultural connection and outrigging. Initially students had some sessions based around cultural identity, they also did a short course in water safety at the Noarlunga Aquatic Centre. Students are now in the process of designing their own artwork to go on an outrigger they will paint as a group and they are mastering the art of paddling an outrigger. The end goal of the program is for students to be able to compete at the National Championships against other schools next year.

DEBATING YEAR 12 SAILING CAMPThis year we had a small team of students keen to participate in debating. Originally the team had both Year 7 and 8 students, so we took the option to debate in the Year 8 competition. Due to changes of heart we became a core team of two: Hannah and Rooba in Year 7 Tingara C3, with the support of Josh making our required third member. We participated in 4 of the 5 debates and although we didn’t win overall, our speeches and points raised merit with the adjudicators. We learnt much from being in the competition, and our opposition were always amazed that they were debating a Year 7 team, rather than a Year 8 team. We enjoyed preparing for the debates. Hannah always had good ideas on what might be said by the opposition, so we could be prepared for rebuttals, and Rooba always had the research with statistics to support our case. Josh made some good points and helped support the team. We acknowledge the support and assistance of Mrs Sandra Greenan when Ms Jacqueline Hiscock was not available.

Members of the Year 12 Physical Education class attended a 3-day Sailing camp at the Murraylands Aquatic Centre. Students participated in a variety of lessons to develop their skills, knowledge and understanding of Sailing by qualified instructors. They were assessed on their learning, and grades were awarded which contributed to their overall practical assessment in PE. The students involved were Simon, Dana, Jack, Will, Michael, Lauren, Ian and Lachlan. All students enjoyed the experience and were successful in achieving high level grades for their efforts. Well done to the students involved, congratulations on your excellent work! A special thank you to Kayla Tilling for supporting the students on the excursion.

FAMILY HUB WEAR IT PURPLE DAYIt is that time when teachers reflect on the progress and learning of each individual student and provide a snapshot, via the school report, for the term. Again, I encourage you to reflect on this report with your child: to identify areas of growth; to discuss opportunities to grow. For our year 12s this is their final school report, before getting their SACE certificate sometime in December. As mentioned in my term 1 Family Hub, the qualities teachers will reflect on include: engagement; persistence; time management; preparation for lessons; respect for others and collaboration. Of course, there will be their progress grade too. Another important indicator on your child’s report will be their attendance percentage. The Department for Education’s acceptable level is an attendance rate of 95% or higher. Students who attend every lesson are more likely to be successful in their studies and their chosen pathways, than students who regularly miss school. Students who have fallen below the 95% will have missed over 10 days of schooling which equates to approximately 50 hours of learning. For a senior school student, this is equivalent to the minimum number of hours for 10 credit points (roughly a semester of work).

In reality, especially in winter when illness is about, maintaining 95% - 100% attendance is difficult. However, there are strategies that students can use so that they can stay on top of their learning: checking DAYMAP for lesson information and tasks; directly emailing their teachers asking for content that will be missed; on return to school, seek out their teachers to find out what was completed in their absence (also a good opportunity to negotiate extensions). In Senior School, there is the option to access special provisions to support students with extended absences in their learning. To access these your child will require a medical certificate or mental health care plan or medical specialist letter depending on the reasons for the prolonged absence. In Middle School, if your child requires special provisions you will need to contact the relevant House Leaders or school Wellbeing Leaders. If the extended absence is for a family holiday, you need to seek an exemption from school through the Principal, by completing an Exemption Application available through the school.

Friday August 31 was Wear It Purple Day, a day which celebrates diversity and supports the LGBTQI+ community. The Gay Straight Alliance (GSA), a student lead organisation, planned a fantastic purple themed event which included delicious rainbow cupcakes, fantastic musical performances, an awesome art competition, and the selling of charity ribbons. They did a tremendous job and raised $200.50. This event and the support that the Seaford Secondary College staff and students showed means that students feel safe and included at school. A massive thank you to all who helped make Wear It Purple Day a brilliant day.

THE ARTS NEWS

MUSIC VISUAL ART

VISUAL ARTStudents in Year 8 having been exploring the use of multiple layers of colours and line drawing. An amazing array of previous students’ work has been put on display in the staff corridor, due to the efforts of Mr Ian McGregor. They serve as a wonderful reminder of the breadth of talent our students display and are capable of. Many staff have commented in delight at having this new exhibition to delight the senses.

DANCEStudents are directing their energy into preparations for the Arts Showcase on Tuesday, October 16 at the Hopgood Theatre. Senior students can be found rehearsing throughout lunchtimes in order to present the best possible version of their efforts.

MUSICIn week 7 senior school Music students were in great demand. Groups and individuals in years 10, 11 and 12 were called on to perform for a lunchtime concert on Monday and again at Moana Primary School on Wednesday. The events were the final products for two Year 12 students, demonstrating their learning about creating music performances and understanding about running PA systems. The performances were very well received by students from junior primary to senior school. Some of these students will also be appearing at the Arts Showcase on October 16.
