Seabiscuit’s Boatworks in N Scale
Seabiscuit’s Boatworks is representative of a waterfront / wharf structure that could house a fish market, terminal or, as shown, a small boat manufacturing and repair shop. With some modifications it could be used in a non-marine environment as well if you modify the pier supports.
• Includes bonus boat kits and boat components for clutter on the dock
Supplied Kit Components:
• 6 sheets of laser cut and engraved stabilized Resin Impregnated Board (RIB) for crisp, high resolution detail
• 2 Seabiscuit 18’ boat kits • 1 sheet of shed clutter (RIB) • 1 sheet of laser cut clear window glazing • 1 sheet of laser cut paper trim • 1 sheet of bracing • Styrene strip and shapes • 1/12” dowel material for the piers • Tar paper roofing material • 1 sheet of paper printed signage • Kit assembly instructions • Drawings: Elevations and Parts Identification
Suggested Tools and Supplies:
• X-Acto type knife with fresh blades (#11 style is best) • Tweezers • Fine sandpaper (400+ Grit) • Masking tape or clear adhesive tape • Probond, Elmers white glue or Scotch Quick-Dry Adhesive (I like the Scotch adhesive as it dries with
little residue and has a great fine applicator tip)
• CA glue for immediate bond of small hard to place parts • Acrylic or enamel paint
We hope you enjoy making this kit as much as we did providing it to you. If you have any questions, please contact us at [email protected].
The following instructions and photos will provide the basics for assembling this detailed kit. We have tried to make the steps as straight forward as possible, but please note that you might want to change the order of assembly to suite your own technique and modifications that you might make along the way. As usual it is best to familiarize yourself with all the parts and instructions before you start on this craftsman level kit.
NOTE: If you would like to view these instructions in full colour, please feel free to download a full colour
copy at and click on the www.interactionhobbies.comlink for "Instructions" near the top of the page.

Your kit comes with sheets of laser cut 0.018” thick
RIB, laser cut clear window material, and a
basswood sheet of bracing and doublers along with
a vertical trim sheet.
You will also find some styrene material, paper
signage sheet and some dowels.
1 Start by cleaning out any contaminates and
remaining dust that may be in the cracks of the
engraved details in sign, walls etc.
This is done by using a stiff bristle brush and gently
dusting the nooks and crannies. Don’t be too
aggressive as the material can be brittle and fine
detail may be broken or removed. Avoid touching
very fine details like window muttons etc.
2 Painting the parts while still attached to the sheet is an
easy way of getting quick and easy coverage for your
model and to minimize warping. I like to use the “ZIG
Woodcraft” paint markers available from many of the
craft stores like Michaels, though any acrylic, enamel
or oil based paint works well.
Make sure you consider which side is out or in so you
can colour the inside walls where required.
For the 3D engraved parts, paint with a base of light grey.
Then a wash of india ink and alcohol. Finish with dry-
brushing white or very light grey to hit the high spots.
Generic Photo, actual parts differ.

Glue the glazing to the backside of the wall. This will allow
for easier installation of the window muntins. Glue
together the wall assembly as shown.
3
Repeat the steps for the remaining walls and doors.
Assemble the repair bay door herringbone backing to the support frame. Glue the hinges to the door assembly as
shown, leaving the hinge overhang the edge. Glue the door trim frame to the wall. Then glue the door assembly to the
wall/door trim as shown above.
These two particular walls are very delicate so take
extreme care when handling. The glazing sheet will
strengthen the wall somewhat. Take care that the glazing
does not cover the roof joist notches.

5 Add bracing to the back of the walls as you see fit.
Take note that in the following steps some of the
walls will have stiffness added by double layers of
material, so bracing is not required on those walls.
Also note the position of the window glazing. It would
be a good time to glue in the window material as well
to assure everything fits well.
This kits has full joists in the roof so do not cover up
the joist notches when putting in bracing or glazing.
The building base is the dock/deck. Locate the parts on
the RIB sheets and cut them loose. Sort them to length as
shown.
6
Using the supplied marking jig, mark the spacing at
each end of the bottom of the deck panel as shown.
I found that an easy way to glue the joists to the deck is to
spray the deck with CA accelerator just before applying
the stringers. You can also use white glue, but it takes
longer between applying each stringer.
Dip the gluing edge in the Thick CA or white glue. Dab
the excess off on paper or tissue and apply over the
marks that you drew on the panel.
Don’t forget to use the right length of joist!

Install the end stringers here and here.
Glue the support beams as shown above with spacing
to fit the 1/12”dia to fit the pilings. You can use the
supplied piling jig to check the spacing.
Glue the shore side wall assembly and the inside wall
assemblies together as shown to the right. Install them on
the base, taking time to fit them into the slots on the
deck. Then add the outside shop wall and stop to check
that everything is square.
Glue the inner foundation wall to the deck, flush with the
deck floor.
Glue in the waterside end wall in the slots in the dock and
glue all the walls on the inside with a dab of glue.
7
Glue the skylight walls in to position.
Glue in the office wall and then glue the floor of the
repair bay to the bottom of the walls.

Fit the repair bay outer wall and glue in place. I add a dab
of glue to the internal corners to strengthen the bonds.
Now is a good time to decide how your model will be
positioned on your layout or diorama as there are
multiple levels to the building base and the pilings.
Figure out the heights that you need for the water level of
your scene and cut the dowels a bit longer (apprx. ¼”).
The piling jig can be used to work your placement in your
layout.
8
Using the piling dowel jig you can place and glue the
dowels to the deck beams.
NOTE: One set is missing on the prototype, shown
above, at this point
9
(Placement on a diorama) Note the holes in the base
for the extra length of the dowels.

You can choose to install the bracing for the deck pilings
at this point. The patterns shown here are typical, but you
can adjust to your liking. I prefer to use thick CA and dip
each end of the brace in and place the brace with
tweezers.
Make sure you use the piling jig to assure that everything
is straight and square between each piling dowel.
Alternately, this step can be done after installation on
your layout if you have close access and are really good
with tweezers and glue.
10
Your kit includes a dock ramp platform so you can make
your way down to the water for the future addition of
Pogo’s Water Taxi Service or any water level dock(s).
11
You will see how this lines up to the deck pilings with
two additional pilings.

Locate, paint and glue the RIB baseboards around the
building, cutting to fit around door frames and corners.
12
Locate, paint and glue the corner trim on all corners
of the walls as shown above.
Using the supplied styrene strips, trim them to the length
of the rail slots in the top of the deck. Paint them a rusty
colour and glue in place with CA.
It might be a good time to tackle the boat trolley to make
sure it will fit the rails properly. Alternately, you can install
the rails later, but don’t forget them! Glue a couple of
scrap blocks to the end as a rail stop to make sure your
boat trolley does not go for a swim!
13
Decide if you want your deck doors open or closed. If
open, then cut each door segment apart for the frame
and panel/sashes and glue together separately.
14
If you are wanting the doors closed, then assemble
the doors and frames/sashes as a single unit. Install
the glazing to the back of the assembly. Glue the door
assembly to the door frame.

15. (a) Glue the lean too frames together. (b) Then glue
the frame to the deck using the slots.
15
Glue the railings to the outside of the deck as shown
above and below.
Ladders installed.
16 The railings
should line
up with the
joists for
gluing. Note
ladder.
17 Glue in place shed roof trusses (10 identical). Glue the
shop waterfront awning trusses in place (outboard
ones are different, 2 same, 4 same).
Glue the roof joists into the slots on the building. Take
care to note the roof joist sizes as shown below.

Glue on the end joists to the roof panels. Note that they
are the longer of the roof joists.
19
Apply glue to the joists and set the roof panels in
place, aligning the edge of the panel with the edge of
the building and joist end.
Glue the three awning supports over the office doorway.
Glue the awning to the supports.
20
The roofing can be painted a simple black/dark grey. I
used small strips of paper, glued in an overlapping
fashion and then painted with matt medium. Each
seam was marked with a fine felt marker and then dry
brushed with a light grey.
Shorter joists, these two rows. Longer joists,
this row.
Longer roof joists, 6 locations.

The launch rail supports are made from three layers of
RIB glued together.
21
Cut the RIB rails after gluing to fit your model layout
and depending on height above the water level.
Note the position of the launch rails on the piling jig for
alignment to the building. It is not critical for this, but acts
as a guideline. Glue the styrene launch rails as shown to
the right and then trim and glue the supports as required.
Assemble the signs (2) as shown. Paint the frames and
support to your liking.
22
Glue the signage to the support. Glue the frames to
each side of the assembly. Coat with gloss medium.
Glue signage in place inserting into holes in the walls as
shown (2 places).

Use the gantry support frame jig and cut 2 cross supports
and 4 vertical support legs.
23
Parts that are needed to build the gantry.
(a)Glue the 3 parts of the truss together. (b)Glue support
to the end of the gantry beam. (c) Glue the front support
to the gantry beam against the truss web. You will need
to slide the c assembly through the web to fit in place.
Glue the base plate to the bottom of the support legs.
Glue the gussets to the front support legs inside of the
channel of the support leg.
Next task is to build up the tiny gantry winches. Locate
and don’t drop these parts!!

The included boat trolley/dolly assembly is a finicky bit
of work for N Scale, but the detail effect is worth the
effort. Start by gluing the three frames to the center
beam. Note the tapers and the thickness of the center
area of each frame to get the order. Then glue on the
side beams as shown. Finish up with installing the
inner and outer rollers.
25 Your kit includes two Seabiscuit 18’ work boats that
the boatworks manufactures.
For added detail, you could install a colored piece of
paper behind the instrument panel before installing
the cockpit bulkhead.
As well, you can install a small block of wood or plastic
for a seat for the driver.
Glue the gunwale doubler to the bottom of the top
frame. Assure that it has an even lip all around.
Glue in the cockpit bulkhead, but inserting at an angle
and twist to fit the gunwale doubler into the slots.
Install the keel.
Install the stern bulkhead as shown. When dry, curve
the side panels by hand to match the frame stern and
bow points. Glue with CA cement.

Form the lower panels to match the curve of the keel
with the side panels. Glue in place with CA starting at the
stern and working forward.
Crease the bow panel as shown along the score lines
and glue to the top frame. And cockpit bulkhead.
Glue the floor in by inserting the front first and then align
to the aft bulkhead.
Fold, glue and install the motor cover to the floor
panel.
Crease the windscreen along the score line and glue to
the bow panel with canopy cement.
Finish up by installing the instrument Panel frame and
steering wheel if you dare! They are pretty small!!
