Imagine sailing under the ocean in a yellow submarine. Fish swiming in front of the portholes, an octopus peers in from the dark water surrounding you.
The Sea & Me allows your imagination to run wild. From dropping your line off the stern of a fishing boat, to piloting your own vessel, there is no limit to what your imagination will explore in the many areas of this new exhibit.
A variety of beautiful fish swim among the colorful reefs. Put your hand in the tank with cleaner shrimp and they immediately go to work giving you a “manicure.” Touch new animals in a special touch pool, search for treasures in sand boxes. Then enter the Aquarium theater to engage in free exploration activities that inspire you to create your own ocean experience.
The Submarine Room or Ocean Research Vessel the “Sea Lemon” gives visitors an opportunity to learn about the tools used to study animals in the ocean. Through interactives one can explore the ocean with simulations and tools that demonstrate what deep sea exploration is like through sensory experiences and manipulatives. Light changes are connected to a control panel and show light changes associated with depth. There is a button that when pushed cause bubbles to occur which represents dissention, examples of sounds underwater through the use of sonar, and the opportunity to see the surface through the periscope. There are portholes into tanks that allow for observation of animals in the sea.

Find the following words and draw a line through them.
In the fishing room visitors will learn about the animals we catch from the ocean. Fishing poles and nets and a fish scene are set up for a fishing adventure. Dressing up in fishing gear and aprons provides a real life fisherman’s wardrobe for role playing. The Gulf of Mexico tank features fish that are caught in that part of the United States. From the fishing boat helm, slide off and visit the market to weigh out the catch.
Understanding where our food comes from promotes
an awareness and appreciation for the animals and the
environment.
The Ocean Play Room focuses on the ocean as a recreational place for discovery and interaction. Coral reefs are found in oceans all over the world. Here they can interact with animals of the coral reef in a variety of ways. Visitors will find a sandbox stocked with hidden beach animals. There is also a tropical reef discovery box where children will connect the things in the box with the animals in the tank above the box. There are opportunities to touch animals. The Cleaner Shrimp exhibit and the Shark and Ray Touchpool both give a tangible connection with animals found in the wild. Visitors will be able to experience what shark and ray skin feels like and compare it to how they may have thought it would feel. When visitors submerge their hands into the Cleaner Shrimp exhibit they will receive a live “skin cleaning” as they experience what it feels like to have a Cleaner Shrimp clean them. This exhibit brings the human / animal connection together with live animal touch experiences.
Wouldn’t it be strange if we didn’t have beaches or oceans? The Theater has been transformed into an ocean “Free Play” zone. Here there are animal costumes, such as mammals, birds, fish and invertebrates. There are discovery drawers for exploration and inquiry related to the ocean and its inhabitants. They include biofacts and other learning tools. A quiet corner provides a place to read books. The books here appeal to an age range of 4 to 10 and have an ocean focus. Topics include animals, habitats, and research and fishing information. Sometimes we forget how much fun it is to just play. Not only is playing outside fun but it is also good for your children and for you. The theater provides
imaginative play ideas that can continue long after your visit to our Aquarium is over.
Slowing down and taking the time to observe, is an amazing way to learn about the natural world and to use all of our senses. In the Connect to Nature Room visitors will have an opportunity to cross the boardwalk and use sea scopes to observe the fish below. Visitors will be able to make the connection that nature is everywhere and everywhere nature is different but present to be enjoyed and discovered. Upon entry to the Sea and Me visitors are able to ask questions about animals. As they exit, visitors will be asked to give ideas about how they might interact with the outdoors environment, with or without children.
