Sea Island Habitat for Humanity A Mission. A Ministry. A Miracle.
January, 2012
Happy New Year!
On behalf of the 290 Sea Island Habitat for Humanity families, the Board of
Directors, the staff, and volunteers we want to thank you for your support. The
ministry of Sea Island Habitat for Humanity is centered on helping families. More
than just building structures in which people live, Habitat empowers people to build a
more secure future. Our homeowners feel very blessed to have this opportunity and
are thankful for supporters like you who have allowed Sea Island Habitat to
successfully partner with over 1,150 adults and children to provide safe and decent
places to call home.
In 2011, Sea Island Habitat for Humanity began construction on ten homes in Joeva
Cove, an existing community in West Ashley. This provision of access to affordable
housing has been an excellent example of partnership between SIHH, the local
government, area churches, local businesses, and community volunteers. Dedicated
staff, volunteers, and community members from SIHH have worked together to build
these homes.
As we look to 2012, we are excited to begin building two new communities on James
Island: Green Valley Lane and Laurel Oak Grove. We are also very excited to finish
the last three homes in Joeva Cove. We ask that you please continue to join us in our
mission to provide affordable homeownership opportunities to local families in need.

Alleshia Pinckney and her three
sons Darius, David and Jeremy
have been chosen as The House
that Jack Built family—a project
that will honor the late SIHH
Board President Jack Hostutler.
Currently, Alleshia works at the
Johns Island Piggly Wiggly as a
bookkeeper and has been there
for 19 years. The Pinckney
family is very involved with their
church, Charleston Full Gospel,
and is thrilled to be The House

New Construction on James Island
MLK Build
More than 30 volunteers
participated on Monday, January
16th for the 9
th annual Sea Island
Habitat for Humanity Martin
Luther King Day Build. On this
very special day volunteers
honored the legacy of Dr. Martin
Luther King, Jr. by giving back
to the community.
The day started off with a
ceremony where Rev. Charles
Heyward from Saint James
Presbyterian Church addressed
the volunteers. Volunteers this
year included students from
Ithaca College and James Island
residents. The home that was
framed at this year’s build is part
of our five home development,
Green Valley Lane, on James
Island.
Since 2003, Sea Island Habitat
for Humanity has continued to
build on Dr. King’s dream by
encouraging others to give back
to their community in a
meaningful way – by building a
home for a hard-working,
deserving family or by helping
with other important community
projects such as the 2010
Hollywood Community Center.
A big thank you goes out to Rev.
Heyward and all the volunteers
who participated this year’s
Martin Luther King Day build.
Faith in Action Build
In December 2011 Sea Island Habitat for Humanity began construction at our new
James Island neighborhood, Green Valley Lane off of Grimball Road Extension
(near the intersection of Old Military Road and Sessionville). The construction team
and volunteers began by building the block foundation for the first three homes that
are being built in the community. Volunteers who came out during the kick off
weekend for the ―Faith in Action Build‖ on January 7th began framing the first home
in the new neighborhood. The Faith in Action Build will continue every Saturday
through February.
We are thrilled to have ten churches taking part in our James Island Faith in Action
build this year. Several of the churches have been involved with Sea Island Habitat
for years, while for others, this is the first time they are partnering with us. The
following churches will be providing volunteer, financial and prayer support for this
year’s build: James Island Presbyterian Church, Saint James Presbyterian Church,
Circular Congregational Church, Emmanuel Baptist Church, Epworth United
Methodist Church, First Baptist Church of James Island, Harbor Light Baptist
Church, Harbor View Presbyterian Church, Martin Luther Lutheran Church and
Saint James Episcopal Church.
Involvement in our Faith in Action Build not only helps a family in need but also
helps the church by: bringing the congregation together and creating a deeper
commitment to faith and church; providing church members with tangible
opportunities to put their faith into action locally; and communicating the message
of being a caring and compassionate congregation called to action.
If you or your church would like to be involved in the James Island Faith in Action
build, please contact Priscilla Quirk at 843-768-0998x116 or
[email protected] for more information.

Collegiate Challenge
New Year’s Resolution
The homes that we build
wouldn’t happen without
volunteers and donors. Our
homes are 80% volunteer built
helping to keep our costs down.
As a result, we can build better –
more sustainable – homes for
our partner families. If you
haven’t been out to our job site
in a while, why not make a
New Year’s resolution to
volunteer with us a few hours
each week? You’ll be helping
others attain their goal of home
ownership, and you might learn
or sharpen your construction
skills in the process.
Collegiate Challenge is a year-round
alternative break program of five or
more participants, 16 years of age or
older, who visit one of Habitat’s 200
local affiliates throughout the United
States. Groups spend one week working
with the local affiliate, community and
partner families to help eliminate
poverty housing in the area.
For the past 23 years, more than 183,000
students have spent their school breaks
volunteering across the country through
this Habitat for Humanity program.
Habitat’s Collegiate Challenge is one of
the many programs Habitat has to
engage youth ages 16-25 in Habitat’s
work.
Typically during a Collegiate Challenge
trip, individuals have the opportunity to
improve their construction skills,
connect with new people in a new place,
put faith into action and make a real
difference in Habitat for Humanity’s
work of eliminating substandard
housing.
In 2012, Sea Island Habitat for
Humanity will welcome students from
ten different high schools, colleges and
universities who will be coming to the
Lowcountry to help families obtain
simple decent and affordable housing.
Groups will be volunteering in
February – April and will work on
various projects with the affiliate
including new home construction,
critical repair, weatherization and Brush
with Kindness projects.
This year will be the affiliate’s sixteenth
time hosting students during their spring
break and we are appreciative of their
efforts. The work these students will do
will have a lasting impact on our
community.

Habitat Kids’ Christmas Party
Sea Island Habitat for Humanity staff, volunteers, and homeowners welcomed
Santa Clause to the Habitat office on December 15, 2011 for the 3rd Annual
Habitat Kids’ Christmas Party. Over 80 children came to the party and each child
was greeted by Santa and given a gift. The conference room at Sea Island Habitat
office literally bounced with the energy of excited children and their parents.
Guests enjoyed refreshments and a number of Christmas crafts: making paper
chains, tree decorations, and thankful hand outlines. Local volunteers and college
students from Ohio State and North Western helped with craft activities, Santa’s
workshop, serving refreshments, and leading games outside. Thanks to donations
of gifts, cookies, decorations, and a lot of volunteer time, we had a wonderful
party. The students of Porter Gaud School donated two carloads of beautiful gifts
to the party, collected during their toy drive. Sea Island Habitat Board members
and other donors also brought in gifts for the children. The Christmas Party
planning committee members decorated the space and a group of ladies from
Seabrook made 25 DOZEN cookies for the party.
It was heartwarming to experience the true spirit of Christmas and the holiday
season with children from Habitat families made possible by the generosity of
volunteers and donors. We hope to host the event again next year.
Women Build 2012
Plans for Women Build 2012 are
well underway. The committee
met in November 2011 and
January 2012 to begin planning
for the build which will take
place May 5th through May 12
th
at Green Valley Lane on James
Island. SIHH has already
received several grants for this
build from the Publix Super
Market Charities Foundation, the
Town of Kiawah Island, the
Bakker Family Fund and
Women Making a Difference.
Additionally, the October Beach
Club Blowout fundraiser,
sponsored by the Kiawah Island
Club, brought in $6,000 for
Women Build. A fundraising
letter and appeal for additional
donations will be sent out closer
to the build to help meet the
project’s $60,000 goal.
We are looking for individuals
to join the Women Build
committee so please contact
Josephine Rex at 768-0998 or
to get involved with this year’s
Women Build project.
