The difference between sea breeze and land breeze

Lesson Plan providing an experiment which helps explain the different between sea

breeze and land breezeBy: Craig OConnell and Jac !ord

    A. State Standards Addresseda" #tandard $"%: &he st'dent will demonstrate an 'nderstanding of

mathematical thining) controlled investigative design and analysis) andproblem solving"

    i" *ndicator $+%"%: ,se appropriate tools and instr'ments -incl'ding a

safely and acc'rately when cond'cting a controlled scientificinvestigation

ii" *ndicator $+%"/: ,se a technological design process to plan and

    prod'ce a sol'tion to a problem or a prod'ct -incl'ding identifying

    a problem) designing a sol'tion or a prod'ct) implementing adesign) and eval'ating the sol'tion or the prod'ct."

iii" *ndicator $+%"0: ,se appropriate safety proced'res whencond'cting investigations

    b" #tandard $"/: &he st'dent will demonstrate an 'nderstanding of the

relationship between 1arths atmospheric properties and processes and its

weather and climate" -1arth #cience.i" *ndicator $+/"/: #'mmarize the relationship of the movement of

air masses) high and low press're systems) and frontal bo'ndaries

to storms -incl'ding th'nderstorms) h'rricanes) and tornadoes. andother weather conditions"

ii" *ndicator $+/"2: 1xplain how convection affects weather patternsand climate

    B. Objectives

a" #t'dents will learn characteristics abo't warm air and cold airb" #t'dents will learn abo't the movement of air of different temperat'res"

c" #t'dents will cond'ct an experiment demonstrating how the earth heats 'p

    thro'gho't a 3/ ho'r cycle

d" #t'dents will 'se mathematical techni('es to create a graph so they canvis'alize the daily trends in the heating of the earth

    C. Lesson Plan

a" Engage. &he lesson will begin with a ('ic PowerPoint presentation" &he

PowerPoint presentation will introd'ce the st'dents to the characteristics

of cold air and warm air) the movement of cold and warm air) and how theheating of the earth leads to land breezes and sea breezes" 4 ('ic video

will be shown to demonstrate these types of breezes to reinforce the

concept to the st'dents" &he video can be fo'nd at:

b" Explore.4fter the video) an experiment pertaining to the heating of the

1arths s'rfaces will be demonstrated" *t is essential for st'dents to

'nderstand the difference between the heating of land vers's water andhow this translates to air movement" &o demonstrate this concept the

st'dents will cond'ct the following experiment -Please see #ea Breeze and

Land Breeze Lesson Plan 1xperiment." 4s st'dents progress thro'gh theexperiment) they will be recording a step by step methodology) a res'lts

section) and a concl'sion section to help each st'dent 'nderstand the

process that scientists go thro'gh to cond'ct and complete an experiment"

    Steps of experiment

i" *nstr'ctor will have st'dents pair off into two person gro'ps

ii" Prior to the experiment) st'dents will be ased to hypothesize

abo't the heating of 1arths s'rfaces" hat st'dents m'st gain in terms of

the experiment is that the land heats and cools m'ch faster than the water"

#o d'ring the day -while heat lamp is on.) the land will heat 'p faster thanthe water" &he warm air above the land rises) ca'sing the cooler above the

ocean to tae its place" 4s the warm air increases in altit'de) it slowly

cools and falls bac down" &his is a land breeze -to f'lly 'nderstand this)st'dents m'st remember that cold air is denser than warm air) warm air

rises) and an increase in altit'de will decrease the temperat're of the air."

4lso) st'dents will tae meas'rements with the heat lamp off -thisrepresents nighttime." #t'dents will notice that once again) the land

changes temperat're the fastest and cools m'ch faster than the water" &his

means that the warmer air above the water will rise) and the cooler air

above the land will taes its place" 4s the air above the water rises) it

cools and falls bac down" &his process is called the sea breeze"
