to CreateWith God All Things are Possible! This comes as a note of heartfelt thanks to all in our parish who have been the hands and heart of Christ in reaching out to our neighbors “down the street” at Iglesia San Juan Apostol. The Ingathering thus far is beyond all expectations. There is still time to submit your mite box offering if you could not be present on Palm Sunday. Please bring your donation to church on Easter Day or to the parish office by Tuesday, April 3rd. You may make a check payable to St. Andrew’s, noted “mite box offering,” or give to this project online. Thank you for helping the Anglican mission congregation of Iglesia San Juan Apostol with some of its very pressing needs following the loss of its parish house. Come celebrate and be amazed at the outpouring of the tangible blessings of the generosity at St. Andrew’s. Come

meet your brothers and sisters in Christ and their dedicated priest Fr. I. Javier Loyo. See the fruits of their labors and yours.

Holy Week and Easter: the Heart of our FaithThis issue of The Messenger will likely arrive in your mailbox on Maundy Thursday or Good Friday. The services of Holy Week and Easter are indescribable. They are deeply moving and beautiful. Moving through this week, one experiences the full gamut of emotions. Many thanks to all those involved in the planning and execution of these services. Following are a few notes about Good Friday and Easter Day.Children’s Way of the Cross ServiceThis service is held at 6:00 p.m. on Good Friday evening. It begins in Moncrief Hall, then travels into the church and ends in the Shuman Chapel at 7:00 p.m. It is planned with children and families in mind, but all ages will find it very meaningful. Children and youth serve as readers, and youth are also acolytes. We walk with Jesus, symbolically, through the streets of Jerusalem on his way to the cross, making stops along the way for short readings and prayers and object lessons and singing hymns as we go. The nursery is open that evening for the very young.Children’s Walk to the Empty Tomb on Easter MorningThis special program will be presented for children of all ages in two shifts on Easter Day: at 9:15 a.m. and 11:15 a.m. A roadway to an empty tomb will be set up in Moncrief Hall, with other scenery around the room. Children will become the characters in the Easter story as they walk to the tomb and sing hymns as teachers read the wonderful Easter account from the Gospels. Easter crafts and other projects will be a part of this great morning which will end with an Easter egg hunt in the courtyard immediately following the 10:30 service. A beautiful day! A glorious Eastertide to all our families!VBS Planning MeetingJoin in the fun of planning for VBS 2018! Be a part of the team as we lay specific plans for this great week to be held July 16-20. Come to a lunch meeting on Sunday, April 8, from 12:00 to 1:00 p.m. in Youth Room 3 in Ryan House. Think “farm” and “county fair” as we prepare for this summer’s colorful adventure. We welcome YOUR creativity and YOUR talents!

Women’s Ministry: Renewed Mindsby Marsland Moncrief

I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect. Romans 12:1-2

Forty days ago The Rt. Rev’d Jack Iker encouraged those in attendance at the Ash Wednesday service to consider taking a change of direction with “a renewal of our minds”, a new way of thinking about ourselves, towards others and most importantly in our relationship with our Lord.Have you ever actually contemplated exactly what forty days out of your life represents? Forty days of your life is equivalent to 5 5/7 weeks…1 1/4months out of a year…960 hours, and if you consider a worker’s minimum wage of $7.25 per hour, $6, 960.00 (24 hour work period before deductions). Forty days may or may not seem to be a long period

of time in your way of thinking, but what a small sacrifice for the sacrifice He made for us on the Cross. How will you look back on the Season of Lent 2018? With a renewed mind, a new way of thinking about yourself, towards others, in your relationship with HIM? Are you still in need of some more time to change that way of thinking, that habit or stronghold you cannot seem to release? We are creatures of habit, and change can be difficult, inconvenient, and terrifying. While we know it’s possible to break a habit, the task often feels insurmountable when we face the challenge by ourselves. After researching the question “How long does it take to break a habit?” I discovered that it really is an impossible question to answer because it depends on the person and the habit. “As psychologists would say, it’s always the individual and the situation together.” It was observed that up to 40% of the things we do in a day are habits, some good and some bad. Whether it is good or bad, a habit is a learned behavior, and it can be replaced. We have been doing some of these habits for years and years and yet others are new. All habits, good or bad start with a choice. And it is with choice and a renewed mind that habits can be broken. Psychologist Elliot Berkman stated that the time it takes to break a habit depends on three factors, which he described in order of descending importance: First is the availability of an alternative habit. Second is the strength of the motivation to change. Third is the mental and physical ability to break the habit. Oh, if it was so easy! Do you need more time? Forty days can be the beginning of your “Mind under Renewal” campaign. James MacDonald states in his concluding session of Think Differently, Nothing is Different until You Think Differently Bible study, that in order to renew your mind we need to protect and wash our mind with the Word of God. We need to deepen our commitment to God’s Word with the discipline to read it; the desire to study it; and the delight in memorizing, meditating and sharing it with others. The story of the temptation of Jesus found in Matthew 4:1-11 reveals the significance of protecting our minds with the Word of God. Jesus was forty days in the wilderness, fasting and praying before His ministry when Satan confronted Him launching his temptation attack. Although desperately hungry and weakened Jesus stood firm answering from the Word of God:

“But he answered, It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’” Matthew 4:4Despite Satan’s relentless attacks Jesus had the most powerful weapon, God’s Word. “Jesus said to him, ‘Again it is written, You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.’” Matthew 4:7“Then Jesus said to him, ‘Be gone, Satan! For it is written, You shall worship the Lord your God and him only shall you serve.”Then the devil left him, and behold, angels came and were ministering to him.” Matthew 4:10-11Jesus is the Word of God. Jesus is the Author. Protect and wash your mind with His Word. It will break that habit. It will renew you mind.

Now this I say and testify in the Lord, that you must no longer walk as the Gentiles do, in the futility of their minds. They are darkened in their understanding, alienated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them, due to their hardness of heart. They have become callous and have given themselves up to sensuality, greedy to practice every kind of impurity. But that is not the way you learned Christ!-assuming that you have heard about him and were taught in him, as the truth is in Jesus to put off your old self, which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful desires, and to be renewed in the spirit of your minds, and to put on the new self, created after the likeness of god in true righteousness and holiness. Ephesians 4:17-24
