BRIEFHISTORY
ReadauthorJoeySeymour’soutstandingarticleaboutthisspecialClubIn1888agroupofSanDiegansformedtheExcelsiorRowingandSwimClub.Atthattime,the
townwasinthemidstofapopulationboomandthenumberofresidentshadreachedabout14,000,upfromonly2,600peoplein1880.RowingwasthenoneofthemostpopularsportsCompetitiverowingevents,alongwithboxingandhorseracing,drewverylargecrowdsandfosteredextensivewagering.In1891theClubdroppedthenameExcelsior,andbecametheSanDiegoRowingClub.Ineightyearsthemembershadraisedthe$2,000necessarytobuildtheirfirstboathouse.TheboathousebuiltonpilingsinSanDiegoHarborwouldhousetheClubforseventy-nineyears.Tocelebratethenew
boathouseagroupswim,calledtheNewYear’sDayPlunge,wasorganizedonJanuary1,1900.Today,thistraditioncontinuesatthenewboathouseonMissionBay.
A.W.Coggeshall,alongtimeSDRCmemberandcompetitiveoarsman,diedin1987andleftthelocalrowinggroupsseparatebequeststofosterthesportthathadmeantsomuchtohim.ThisresultedinthebuildingoftheCoggeshallRowingCenter.TodaythiscenterhousestheSanDiegoRowingClubinfourboatbaysplustheGartyPavillionandtheUniversityofCalifornia,SanDiegoandUniversityofSanDiegocollegiatecrews,eachintheirownboatbay.
TheClubmembershipinthisnewfacilityhasgrowntoover300
menandwomen.TheClubincludesalargeandsuccessfuljuniorprogram,amastersgroup,aswellasrecreationalrowers.RowingprogramsfocusonbringingthisgreatsporttothewiderSanDiegoCommunityandtakeintoconsiderationathleteswithuniqueneeds.Stateoftheartequipmentandover120shellsarehousedinourfacility.TodaytheredandwhitecolorsoftheSanDiegoRowingClubareseenfrequentlyinCalifornia,acrossthecountryandoftenatchampionshipsthroughouttheworld.http://www.sandiegohistory.org/journal/v57-1/v57-1seymour.pdf

WhattoWearClosefittingclothing–rowingtrou,tights,‘bikeshorts’(withoutthepad).Nothingbaggyasthingswillgetcaughtinthemovingpartsandoarhandleswillgetcaughtinaloseshirt.
WhattoBringintoTheBoatSocks.Thefollowingareoptional:waterbottle(nometalbottles),sunglasses,hat.Aheadlampifyouplantorowinthedark.
MakingAdjustmentstoYourSeatYourinstructorwillgooveradjustmentsthataremadetoaboatbeforeyourow.Ingeneral,thefollowingitemsshouldbeadjustedandcheckedbeforeeveryrowandtypicallydoneonthedeckwhiletheboatisinslings.
• FootStretchers–Thereare3nutstoloosen(donotremovethenutcompletely),
tomoveforwardorbackwardsowheninthefinishpositionyourhandsareabouttwofistsapart.
• Spacers–Theycanbemovedaboveorbelowtheoarlock.Thepurposeofthespacersistoallowtheforearmtobeparalleltothewater(ataller/longertorsorowermayneedmorespacersonthebottomtoraisetheirforearmpositionrelativetotheboat).TheMaastrainingboatsarenotadjustable.
• Shoes–Someshoesareadjustable.• Tracks–Sometimes,butnotoften,thetrackswillneedtobeadjustedforward
orbackward.It’sbesttoquicklycheckthatyourtracksareinthesameplaceasothersintheboat.Iftheydoneedtobeadjusted,usethetwowingnutsunderthetracks,belowthedeck.

Blisters&TrackBurnsSome,okallrowerswillexperienceallsortsofblistersandcallusesontheirhands.Therearevaryingopinionsonhowtobestdealwiththem.Googleoraskyourteammateswhattheydo.Yourcoachwillprobablysayyou’regrippingyouroartootightly.Somerowersmayexperiencetrackburns,wherethetrackrubsthebackofthecalf.Youcanpurchaseormake‘calfguards’(neopreneorsocks)thatcanbeworntoprotectthecalves.
WhatBoatShouldYouUse
Onceyou’vecompletedtheLearntoRowclassesyoumaytakeoutboatsonyourown.Butwhatboatshouldyoutake?Asanewrower,stickwiththetrainingshells(Maas),theyarefantasticfordevelopingtechniqueandconfidenceinyourrowingandsteeringabilities.Theycomeinadvancingsizes(skinnierandlonger).Asyouprogress,trythePeinertsingles,theyareracingshellsbutatadmorestableandabitlessfinicky,buttheyaresleekandfast.It’swisetoavoidtheracingshellsuntil…youareracing.
TheDirectorofRowingoraCoachcanhelpdecidewhentotrythenextlevelofboatclass.
SignoutSigninSheetYoumustsignoutbeforelaunchingandsigninwhenyoureturn.Besuretocheckthelogthatnoonehasreservedtheboatforthattimeslot.Atthepodium,thereisalistofboats,theircategorybytraining/racingshellandsize.Youmayreserveaboatforaparticulartimeslotuptooneweekinadvance.PriorityisgiventoallcoachedprogramsandLearntoRowclasses.

TheBoats(akaShell)Therearetwotypesofboatsorshellsusedinrowing.Insweeprowing,eachrowerusesoneoar.Insculling,eachrowerusestwooars.Sweepboatscanhavetwo,four,oreightrowers.Scullingboatshaveone,two,orfourrowers.Eachboatmayormaynothaveacoxswain,theon-boardcaptainwhosteerstheboatandcontrolsthetempo.Boatsaredesignatedbyanumber,indicatinghowmanyrowersareonboard;theletterxtoindicatescull,andasymbol(+or-)toindicatewhetherthereisacoxswain.
Single(1x).Onerower,nocoxswain.
Double(2x).Tworowers,nocoxswain.

PRACTICE
CoachedPracticeandLineupsTheCoachwillsendouttheworkout,lineupsandboats/oarsforpracticethedaybefore.Youshouldreviewtheworkout,everyseatshouldknowtheworkoutbeforepracticestarts.Typically,ittakes15-20minutestogetboats,oarsandyourseatreadyforpractice.Thecoachusuallygivesaquicktalkbeforeboatsheadtothewater.Forthe5amto7ampractice,wearrivenolaterthan5am,launchby5:30,returntotheboathouseby7am,andfinishwashingandputtingequipmentawayby7:15.ThissamegeneralprocessisfollowedforallprogramsItemsyoumaywanttobringtopractice,andintotheboat

RowingEtiquetteAnyBoat,AnySeat,AnyTime.Ifyouarerowinginacoachedprogram,understandthatthecoach’slineupismeantforapurpose.Whateverboatorseatyouareassigned,itshouldbeyourgoaltomakeitthebestpossiblerowforyourselfandyourteammates.NotalkingintheboatReally,thisshouldbeextendedtoincludeanytimethatyouaretouchingaboat.Thereareacoupleofreasonsforthis,mostimportantlyforthesafetyofrowersandtheboat.Nottalkingallowstherowerstopayattentiontotheirsurroundings,handletheboatsafely,andmostimportantlyhearthecoxswainorcoach’sinstructionsandrespondquickly.Whileonthewater,italsoallowseachrowertofocusontheirownrowing,andthefeeloftheboat.ListentoyourcoxswainWehaveallheardthecommandsmanytimes,anditiseasytogetcomplacent,butitisimportantthatthereisonlyonevoiceinaboat.Beingalertandconscientiousofwhatyou'redoingwhilehandlingaboatisabigpartofpreventingdamagetoequipmentandkeepingeveryonesafe.

RegattaSignupEveryrowerwhowishestoparticipateinanyregattawithSDRCmustfillouttheRegattaSignupSpreadsheet(besuretobookmarkthispageforfuturereference).Indicatewhichregattasyouplantoattend.Ifyouchangeyourmind,pleaseupdatethespreadsheetASAP.Youshouldindicateatleast4weeksinadvanceforlocalracesandseveralmonthsinadvanceforthelargerraces(Regionals,Nationals,International,HeadoftheCharlesakaHOC,SDCrewClassic).Someregattasentriesclose2weeksinadvance,some4monthsinadvance.Someracesareconsidered‘Institutional’raceswhereparticipationislimitedbytheregattaorganizersandnotallrowerswhoindicateda“yes”fortheregattawillrace.Thecoachwilldecidethefinallineups.
RegattaFeesThereareentryfeesassociatedwitheveryrace.Ifthetrailerhastotraveltoaregatta,thetrailerfeesarespreadamongtheparticipants.Aftertheregatta,youwillreceiveanemailwiththefeesowed.Alatefeeisincurredafter30days.Allfeesassociatedwitharegattaarepaidforbythethoseparticipatinginthatregatta.

RaceFormatsSprint-Thestandardinternationalracingdistanceis2000meters,thestandardracedistanceforMastersis1000meters.Thecourseusuallyhassixtoeightboatsracingagainsteachotherintheirseparatedesignatedlaneswhichmayormaynotbemarkedbybuoys.HeadRace-Theseraces,whicharegenerallyheldinthefall,aretypically3000-5000meterslongandtheboatsarestartedintheirrespectivedivisionsseparatelyat10secondintervals.Theseregattasaretypicallyconductedonariverorbaywithanassortmentofbridgesandturnsthatcanmakepassingquiteinteresting.

Drive:Thepartofthestrokecyclewheretherowerappliespowertotheoar.Thisconsistsprimarilyofthelegdrive,thenstraighteningtheback,andfinallypullinginthearms.Mostofthepowerinthestrokeisaccomplishedduringthelegdrive.
Finish:Thebladecomesoutofthewaterandthelegsarestraightandthehandshavefinishedpullingtheoarsintothebody.Whenthebladecomesoutofthewateritisimmediatelyrotatedor“feathered”sothatitisparalleltothesurfaceofthewater.
