Missouri RiverRemains Challengefor South Dakota

For decades, people have tried to control the mighty Missouri River. SDPB Television looks at the efforts in a new one-hour documentary: Challenging Waters.

Challenging Waters looks at the history of the uses and management of the Missouri River in South Dakota from pre-settlement through the present day. The documentary includes the development of the reservoir system and the master manual that dictates how managers are supposed to control the river’s flow. The Army Corps of Engineers must balance the often competing demands for hydroelectric power generation, recreation, environmental concerns, downstream navigation and flood control.

In the end, despite a series of massive dams and reservoirs, this mighty river proves to be a force of nature that is impossible to completely control. Challenging Waters also looks back at the flooding of 2011 and the long and short term changes that are the result.

SDPB Radio looks at flood recovery one year later during Dakota Digest on Thursday, May 31, and Friday, June 1, at 7:35am (6:35 MT) and 5:30pm (4:30 MT). For listening on-demand, go to SDPB.org/DakotaDigest.

Forty years ago, on June 9, 1972, torrential rains and the failure of a dam sent a wall of water smashing through Rapid City and other Black Hills communities. After it was over, 238 people were dead; more than 3,000 were injured; nearly 3,000 homes were destroyed or damaged; hundreds of mobile homes were swept away; some 5,000 vehicles were destroyed. It was one of the most devastating floods in the nation’s history.

SDPB will mark the 40th anniversary of this traumatic event with special coverage on SDPB Radio, Television and Online.

SDPB Radio’s one-hour Dakota Midday program will feature memories, facts and information about the disaster on Thursday and Friday, June 7 and 8, at Noon (11 MT). The programs will be archived at SDPB.org/DakotaMidday. In addition, SDPB Radio plans a week of special coverage June 4-8 as part of a Dakota Digest series at 7:35am (6:35 MT) and 5:30pm (4:30 MT). After the segments air, archives of the special reports will be available at SDPB.org/DakotaDigest.

On Saturday, June 9, at 7:30pm (6:30

MT), SDPB1 TV and SDPB.org will broadcast the two-hour The Black Hills Flood – Remembrance & Renewal convocation event live from the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center in Rapid City. The event will include presentations on the causes, the flood and the aftermath, as well as a tribute to survivors and remembrance of those who died. SDPB Television’s Dakota Life will look back at the flood as well on SDPB1 on Thursday, June 14, at 8pm (7 MT). The program will be archived at SDPB.org/DakotaLife.

The storm that led to the disaster was epic. Keystone recorded 15 inches of rain in 6 hours and more than 10 inches were recorded in a 60-square-mile area. Creeks all over the area, including Rapid Creek, turned into torrents, leading to the failure of the Canyon Lake Dam above Rapid City and the disaster that followed. For more on the flood – photographs, eyewitness accounts, remembrance events and links to other sites – go to the Rapid City Public Library website at www.rapidcitylibrary.org.

History, SD, Nostalgia Crown June Festival

Antiques Roadshow Junk in the Trunk looks at family treasures.

SDPB Television celebrates June with encores of Over South Dakota, a musical look at a pioneer icon, and nostalgia – plus a final chance to score tickets to the Antiques Roadshow appraisal event coming up this summer in Rapid City. It’s all part of the June Festival membership drive, June 2-10 (see the Festival listings on the next page).

The spectacular Over South Dakota returns with several presentations. The high-definition aerial tour of the state takes us across our beautiful state.

Pa’s Fiddle, a new program, gathers a group of stars to present the music that would have delighted the pioneers in Laura Ingalls Wilder’s time on the prairie.

The oldies but goodies come back in nostalgic specials like The British Beat; 60s Pop, Rock & Soul,

featuring the late Davy Jones; Pop, Rock & Doo Wop; Magic Moments – The Best of 50s Pop; and Superstars of Seventies Soul.

Longtime favorites like Daniel O’Donnell and Lawrence Welk brighten the schedule, too.

Film Explores Trauma of Indian Boarding School

Walter Littlemoon struggled with his challenging past.

SDPB1: Thursday, June 12, 8pm (7 MT) humiliated or abused. What effects did these actions cause? Many Indians, like Littlemoon, lived with

this unresolved trauma into adulthood, acting it out through alcoholism and domestic violence. At age 58, Littlemoon decided to write and publish his memoirs as a way to explain his past abusive behaviors to his estranged children. But confronting the past proved to be an emotional challenge.

The Thick Dark Fog tells the story of how Littlemoon confronted his past so that he could renew himself and his community. The film by Randy Vasquez is winner of Best Documentary in the 2011 American Indian Film Festival.

The mission of many of these schools in the 1950s was to “kill the Indian and save the man.” The children were not allowed to be Indians – to speak their language or express their culture or native identity in

polls on June 5 for the primary elections, and SDPB has the information voters need. Tune into special programming or go to SDPB.org/Election2012 for coverage.

South Dakotans will be faced with multiple names on the GOP primary ballot for president of the United States, even though some of the GOP candidates have ended their campaigns.

Democrats will decide which of two candidates will oppose Rep. Kristi Noem in November. Jeff Barth and Matthew Varilek are seeking the Democratic nomination for the office of U.S. Representative. SDPB Television’s South Dakota Focus presented a conversation with Barth and Varilek in May. The program is archived at SDPB.org/Election2012.

State of the Re:Union Explores Meaning of Community

SDPB Radio’s Best of the Rest will feature the five-part new season of State of the Re:Union in June on Saturdays at 3pm (2 MT). The short-run series features community.

The new season includes:The Community of Comic Books – This

vast community is based around a medium, rather than a geographic location.

Tri-Cities/Walla Walla – The Tri-Cities of the state of Washington are Richland, Pasco and Kennewick – clustered near one another in the vast plains and deserts of Washington state, to

the east of the Cascade Mountains.Baltimore – Baltimore is a city of many

neighborhoods, of intense racial divides not easily overcome.

Vermont – The annual Town Meeting Day attracts people from every town to debate and vote on local issues.

Missouri’s Ozarks – People in the Ozarks are pushing for ways to build community with few resources, while bucking stereotypes imposed on them by the outside world.

Donations Help Turn on New TransmitterSDPB Radio has turned on its 11th

full-power transmitter. SDPB Radio’s newest transmitter – KJSD-FM at 90.3 – is located near South Shore and will serve the Watertown and Milbank regions and The Lakes Area.

The Friends of SDPB have been raising funds over the past six months to help provide funding for the transmitter, bringing in more than $30,000. The remainder of the $175,000 to $200,000+ in costs will come from grants and SDPB’s budget.

Until now, the Watertown and Milbank regions and the Lakes Area have had marginal coverage from transmitters to the northwest and south. But the challenges of distance and terrain have made uninterrupted reception difficult. The new transmitter will resolve those problems.

“We are excited that listeners will have the chance to tune into what the Watertown Public Opinion once called ‘a brilliant beacon of hope for those looking for and expecting excellence in programming,’” said Julie Andersen, Executive Director of South Dakota Public Broadcasting.

SDPB Radio offers some 42 hours of locally produced programming each week, in addition to programs on the national and international levels from providers such as NPR, American Public Media, Public Radio International and the BBC. Programming is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

SDPB Radio is live-streamed at SDPB.org and many local and national programs are archived online. SDPB Radio’s award-winning staff recently earned six first-place and three second-place awards in the AP’s 2012 Great Plains Broadcast contest.

Donations still are being accepted. Call Friends of SDPB at 800-333-0789 or go to the web at SDPB.org/Watertown.

Friends of SDPB offers thanks to these donors:

From Watertown: Marge Alwin, Doug & Maylou Austin, Nancy Turbak Berry, Dacotah Bank, Harriett & Mike Cartney, First Premier Bank/Premier Bankcard, Bruce & Diana Ford, Ross & Bonnie Gerhold, Great Western Bank, Carolyn Hoffman, Brad & Carol Johnson, Bill & Suzan-Oda Knese, John & Mary Larson, Jane Miner, Beverly Moore, Jan & Mike Mullin, Joy Nelson, Dr. Mary Ann Niesen, Roland Pester, Waneen Polly (in honor of Jerry Polly, Oregon, Wis.), Jim Pond, Reliabank Dakota, Mark & Ronda Roby, Sharp Automotive, Watertown Community Foundation, Watertown Public Opinion - Mark S. Roby, Publisher, Wells Fargo Bank, and anonymous.

From Milbank: Leo P. Flynn Estate, Thomas E. & Karen Goetz, Great Western Bank and Tom Pagel.

From Sisseton: John & Jane Rasmussen. From Pierre: Dan & Janelle Toman. From Sioux Falls: Mark & Peggy Shlanta.

The view from the top: SDPB Radio’s new antenna is far from ground level on a tower near South Shore.
