The Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education and Work-
Based learning Module
Quality Assurance
The Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education (QAA)
sets out an overarching code of practice for work-based and
placement learning in programmes awarded by UK Higher
Education Institutions. These principles underpin the ‘Good
Practice Guide’ set out by the University of Chichester and the
Department of Sport Development and Management. The
module incorporates guidelines approved by Skills Active (the
Sector Training Council) and the Institute for the Management
of Sport and Physical Activity (IMSPA).
The Department of Sport Development and Management is
committed to the QAA principles of good practice and the extent
to which this is implemented is demonstrated below:
1. Learning outcomes are clearly identified and contribute to the overall and coherent aims of
the programme
2. Students are assessed appropriately with an emphasis on supporting student learning as well
as measuring academic achievement. Students are given a range of opportunities to
demonstrate achievement of their learning.
3. Policies and procedures are in place to identify responsibilities of academic staff , employer
partners and students. This is achieved by the provision of a Mentor and Student handbook
which sets out the specific responsibilities of all parties concerned .the norms and
expectations for professional conduct and the ethical framework upon which these
expectations are judged. The learning contract sets out key roles and responsibilities and is
a requirement of the placement.
4. A risk assessment is carried out
5. Students are given timely information, support and guidance prior to , throughout and
following their work placement. This is provided through the system of supervisor tutorials,
visits and workshops.
6. The Department have policies and procedures for securing, monitoring, administering and
reviewing work based learning.
