Their superpower is empowering us.
May 30, 2016 AN ADVERTISING SUPPLEMENT TO THE SAN DIEGO BUSINESS JOURNAL A19
LETTER FROM COX BUSINESSMy 16-year-old daughter just got her
driver’s license and has started carting her friends around to various places around town. That poses grave danger to everyone in the county, so consider this a warning. Anyway, while several of the girls were sitting around talking about which coffeehouse to go hang out at, I overheard one girl suggest an option. Another said, “No way! Their Wi-Fi is terrible!” Well, that effectively
ended any chance that coffeehouse had of getting their busi-ness as they chose a spot with better connectivity and lesser coffee. The moral of the story is that you’d be hard-pressed to find a successful business that does not use technology to its advantage.
By the same token, IT leaders, who toil in anonymity, may not be finding cures for the world’s worst diseases or acting as first responders in emergency situations, but they ARE enabling others to do just that. Every day. Through the use of technology.
When I first came up with the idea of TTE back in 2006, most people looked at me like I was crazy. And rightfully so. “Nobody will come,” they said. “IT people don’t like parties,” they said. Nine years later, our awards event is one of the hottest tickets of the year and the San Diego business commu-nity is to be commended for recognizing just how important the role of IT leadership is and how much they deserve this recognition. This event is a platform to pay tribute to IT leaders whose accomplishments draw the attention of their peers who nominate, judge and select the Top Tech Exec honorees. It is the ultimate compliment.
Cox Business would like to congratulate all of the 2016 Top Tech Exec honorees and nominees. It is an inspiring group of innovators who use technology to turn today’s obstacles into tomorrow’s opportunities.
Larry CovalVice PresidentCox Business
From clouds to cybersecurity, our modern world is becoming more and more dependent on technology and the people who develop, guide and innovate on those platforms. From mobile apps to supply chain protocol, information technology is now the medium that drives business on every level and today’s information technology execu-tive must possess multidisciplined talents to manage infrastructures, constantly morphing
software systems and rapidly expanding hardware needs. As part of the 2016 Top Tech Exec Awards, the San Diego Business
Journal is proud to honor these intrepid entrepreneurs who gamble their financial resources on their own innovative concepts; nonprofit managers who struggle daily to keep social service centers operating
on outdated equipment and antiquated software; corporate tech-nology administrators who diligently oversee interlayered systems that keep their companies on the cutting-edge; and security experts, schooled in the latest cybercrime trends, who keep watch on our financial, defense, and personal privacy.
We salute all of this year’s nominees, at the forefront of this ever evolving and essential support system. Without the expertise and cre-ativity of these professionals, our modern business scene would move at a snail’s pace.
Congratulations to all 2016 nominees.

LETTER FROM THE SAN DIEGO BUSINESS JOURNAL
The sponsors, judges and advisory councils of the 2016 Top Tech Exec Awards congratulate all of the nominees, honorees, and special-award recipients. Of the 540 nomination submissions, as nominated by their peers,
colleagues, and employers, 409 Top Tech Execs qualified for the event. It was the largest nomination and qualification round in the nine-year history of the event. Ultimately, 11 nominees were recognized as honorees, and two individuals received special awards. Steve Hart was acknowledged with a lifetime achievement award and Linda Scott was honored with an excellence in information technology award. Hosted at The Paddock at Del Mar Fairgrounds, the annual event drew more than 900 people on Thursday, May 19, 2016 and remains the largest technology recognition event in the history of San Diego.
Event highlights included a proclamation from Mayor Kevin Faulconer, presented by Councilman Mark Kersey of District 5. The proclamation declared May 19, 2016 Top Tech Exec Day; a tradition from the city for the last five years.
Since 2008, Title Sponsor and Top Tech Exec Awards founder, Cox Business, has recognized and lauded the talent pool of information technology innovators in our local community who serve as pioneers and visionaries, adding to the growth and success of their organizations in countless ways.
Next May 2017, the Top Tech Exec Awards event program will celebrate a monumental milestone with a 10-year anniver-sary celebration, recognizing information technology leaders in San Diego.
