New Location, New Schedule
Changes are happening this next year with the South Dakota ACTE State Conference. Not only are we in a new location but we will also have a new schedule.
This coming year we will have a new location as our conference will be moving to Mitchell, SD. Our meeting will take place at Mitchell Technical Institute.
Along with the new location the
schedule will also be changing.
This year instead of the three day
conference with the picnic the night
before we will be have a two day
conference on Mon-
day July 29th and
Tuesday July 30th.
So be ready to attend
two days full of activi-

AN UPDATE FROM THE SDATFACS PRESIDENT
The SDACTE Board of Directors and the SDATFACS officers have been busy planning the upcoming
summer CTE Conference. I am eager to enlighten you on the changes we have made and the plans that we
have in store. The location of the conference has been changed from Pierre to Mitchell at the Mitchell Career
and Technical Institution. We have also shortened the length of the conference to allow teachers to have an
extended vacation or possibly more time to prepare for classes to begin in the fall. Registration for the FACS
division will begin in the morning on Monday, July 29th and the conference will close after the SDFACS ban-
quet on Tuesday, July 30th. The board of directors is planning several tours along with a hands on workshop
presented in the culinary kitchen on the MIT campus. Round tables, and informative breakout sessions and
motivational speakers will round off the conference and be the icing on the cake to get fired up for a new
school year. SDACTE has booked a block of rooms at the Hampton Inn and Comfort Inn in Mitchell. We
recommend the FACS teachers to book at the Hampton. The Agriculture teachers are planning on booking at
the Comfort Inn. The Hampton Inn is within walking distance to the conference center.
In the newsletter you will find the Call for Presentations form. Please take the time to look it over and
if you are interested in presenting at the conference, complete the form and send it back to myself or Dodie
Bemis. We would also like a very strong trade show this year- – if any of you have ideas on who I could con-
tact for the FACS division please let me know by the end of December.
Bev Rieck, Tracy Kern, and I will be attending the national CTE conference in Atlanta, Georgia at the
end of November. We are very excited and look forward to finding valuable information and resources to
share with all of the FACS teachers.
Wishing everyone a safe and restful Thanksgiving vacation.

Call for Presenters
Last February the Menno FCCLA Chap-ter hosted the District 4 FCCLA Leader-ship Meeting. Plans were going smooth-ly until the day before the meeting. Then a FACS kitchen sink pipe sprung a leak and the other kitchen sinks kept backing up. The next day three of the FCCLA moms were coming to prepare the tav-erns for the noon lunch. Once they start-ed working in the kitchens, circuit break-ers kept tripping. Water from the dish-pans had to be poured into a mop buck-et and only two sinks could be used. Unfortunately, these inconveniences couldn't be immediately corrected so my students had to continue limiting the number of electrical appliances plugged into the outlets and haul the mop bucket to the furnace room where the waste water could be drained into a floor sink.
cupboards, sinks, faucets, and counter-tops for two of the four kitchens. Because the other two kitchens will be updated during the summer of 2013, my interior design students will develop the recom-mended plans for remodeling the kitch-ens. So by the time school starts in the fall of 2013, former students will no long-er be able to say "These kitchens look the same as when we were students." By then all of the 1950's style metal cabinets will be replaced. And all of the students will be able to prepare food in modern-ized kitchens.

the event. ProStart teachers appreciate the
support of the South Dakota Retail Associa-
tion and the work they put into the ProStart
program. The state competition for both culi-
nary and management teams will be held in
Mitchell on March 19th and 20th. Any
schools that are interested in starting a ProS-
tart program should make plans to visit the
competition to get a taste of what it has to
offer. This year's National ProStart Invita-
tional is scheduled for April 19-21 in Balti-
ProStart teachers had the opportunity to at-
tend a teacher training and meeting on Octo-
ber 1st at the new Club House Inn and Suites
in Pierre. State competition updates, best
practices, and a look at the new national
ProStart resources and website were on the
agenda. Teachers also had the opportunity to
tour the new Red Rosa restaurant which is
attached to the hotel. A tour of the facilities
along with demonstrations by their executive
chef and sous chef made this a highlight of
more, Maryland. Two teams from South Da-
kota will represent our state at the competi-
tion. In addition, a ProStart student bootcamp
will be held in Pierre on January 31st. Profes-
sional development is available for all teach-
ers at the ProStart summer institutes. More
information on the summer training is availa-
ble on the national website at nraef.org.

dents had to do the exercises, to symbol-
ize how difficult it is to do different tasks
while pregnant. The kids loved it! (Even
the boys:)) In Nutrition and Wellness,
labs are in full swing. I don't know what it
is about being able to cook in school, but
this group sure does love it! This week
we are doing a Substitution Lab, where
we make a Brownie recipe six different
ways. In Middle School FACS, we are in
our careers unit. Students are busy ex-
ploring SDMyLife to find the career that is
right for them. At the end of the until stu-
dents have to do a presentation to report
their findings. Well, that pretty much
sums up what's happening around here.
Hope you all are doing well, and just

Greeting from the Corsica High School
FACS Room! It is hard to believe that it is
November, where has the semester
gone? Time sure has been flying around
here. From Football playoffs, to District
Volleyball, and lots of FCCLA projects,
things sure keep me busy around here!
The past few weeks we started the preg-
nancy unit in my Parenting class, the kids
love it! They ask so many questions, the
class periods flys by! One fun activity we
did in Parenting last week was a Preg-

Fortunately, one of the FCCLA mothers who had prepared the meal also hap-pened to be on the school board. So she recommended to the school super-intendent and the school board mem-bers that the kitchens and wiring should be updated. (I would never have thought to ask for this type of expendi-ture because through the years we have been reminded to be frugal with our requisitions. What I didn't realize is that a kitchen update would be funded with capital outlay money and not with general funds. So teachers, remember this fact. ) Due to the administration and school board understanding why a kitchen up-date was needed, I was able to select new microwaves, electric ranges,

or enhance skills that were not initially
part of the lesson.
One way of introducing competition
would be in Foods classes. Design labs
where the students, either in groups or as
individuals, design or complete their lab
with the idea of being inventive by trying
to make something new and different.
You can have the students vote as a class
(exclude them from voting for their own)
or bring in an outside panel of judges,
such as your principal, study hall stu-
dents or business representatives.
Any number of Foods labs can work as a
competition. Some that I have used in
the past are pizza labs, cake decorating,
sandwiches, and holiday themed labs.
If you do not have food classes or would
like to include competitions in other
classes you can create relay games for
child development and have the students
complete tasks meant to show the devel-
opment of infants, toddlers or adoles-
cents, or have Interior Design students
create a room for a client and then have
the rooms judged by a panel.
Scavenger hunts and review games are
also quick and easy ways to introduce
competition into the classroom
and they give the students a
little something extra to work
for.

Hands-on project based education is a
great way to give your students experi-
ences with the topics being taught in
your classes. Sometime these projects
can be enhanced by adding in a bit of
healthy competition. Many students
learn well through project based learning
but sometimes students need a little extra
push to really work to excel at the next
level.
I, for one, have found that adding in an
element of competition can help achieve
that goal. Students pushing themselves
to better their projects may also provide
the chance to highlight a skill they have
Competitive Edge
To help myself stay organized over the
past years, I have kept all of my lesson
plans, handouts, and copies of power
points in a binder. Then, I went to sav-
ing them on flash drives - finding myself
forgetting where I put them! This past
fall my teacher candidate, Andrea Mar-
shall, shared information on Live Bind-
ers. Our staff at Elkton also had been
using these binders at in-services to fo-
cus on Common Core content. If you
have not already explored the web site
called LiveBinders it is a virtual 3 ring
binder that you can put pretty much any-
thing in. I would highly suggest mak-
ing your own account as it is free and
then you can copy and share binders
from other FACS teachers. One nice
feature of this type of binder is that it no
longer weighs 25 pounds or more to car-
ry around and you can locate your re-
sources whenever you need them.

Poll Everywhere
TECHNOLOGY TIDBIT
Poll Everywhere is used for taking student surveys using mobile devices like phones and
computers. The poll is embedded within the presentation or web page and will update in real
time. Students can answer the questions by texting the proper code or their answer to a num-
ber given on the website.
Go to polleverywhere.com
When you sign up make sure to click on the “I am an educator” button.
You can post questions in presentations or from the website.
Students can respond either by texting their answer to a five digit number 37607, or by going
to polleverywhere.com/vote.
The students will then respond with either the numbers given by the multiple choices answers
or by typing in their response to an open ended question.

to awesome general sessions and great workshops, members are
looking forward to participating in the Knowledge Bowl, putting
on workshops, and even touring in Oklahoma City a little on Fri-
day. And, of course, don't forget the dance....and the SD adviser
Dessert Meeting. See fellow advisers for the location and time! :)
Members are excited to learn more about what FCCLA has to

What a great year 2012 has been! As the 2012-2013 National FCCLA President, I wanted to take the time to update you on all the wonderful
things FCCLA is doing this year. One of our goals at the national level this year is membership. We kicked off a brand new national membership
campaign this year entitled “iRecruit!” where members can rally the forces at the local level increasing membership and compete for amazing
prizes. Another one of our goals at the national level is promoting our national outreach project, Share Our Strength. Share Our Strength is a non-
profit organization working towards ending childhood hunger in America. Our goal at National FCCLA is to try and raise $150,000 for Share Our
Strength. I challenge each and every one of you to look into Share Our Strength and share our passion for this cause. November is a busy month
for us as we have our three national cluster meetings held in Reno, Nevada, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, and Indianapolis, Indiana throughout the
month. I will end by saying thank you for all your hard work and dedication to Family and Consumer Sciences education here in South Dakota. It
is because of you all that students like me are able to experience amazing opportunities and grow as young leaders.
In FCCLA Spirit,
Elliot Johnson
