Copenhagen, 20/06/16 OCL Report by J.C. Müller 2
OCL - Topics
● Beam Time– 2016
– 2017
● Troubles & Projects– Ion Source
– Beam Diagnostics
– Radio Frequency System
Copenhagen, 20/06/16 OCL Report by J.C. Müller 3
Beam Time at Ocl 2016
● 18 Experiments / Runs
– 9x Nuclear and Energy Physics group (~912 hrs)
– 4x Biophysics Group (~72hrs)
– 3x ESS (~40hrs)
– 2x PET (~2hrs)
● Overall Beam Time was ~1026hrs

Beam Time at Ocl 2017
● 8 Experiments / Runs
– 1x Nuclear and Energy Physics group (~48 hrs)
– 2x Biophysics Group (~48hrs)
– 5x ESS (~48hrs)
● Overall Beam Time so far was ~144hrs

Ion Source Trouble - Indicators
● Difficulties accelerating certain particles
● Low yield, only hundreds nA instead of several µA
● Strange magnet settings for Circular Correction Coil 1
● Very high Voltage on the Arc Power Supply, > 1kV instead of 500kV - 900kV
Copenhagen, 20/06/16 OCL Report by J.C. Müller 6
Ion Source Trouble - Measures taken so far
● Screws replaced with new Titanium screws
● The Tubes and Swagelok connections between Chimney Selector Valves and the Anode Plug were replaced
● The Anode was cleaned and later replaced, the port covers replaced and aligned
● A water leak in the upper Anode Plug was fixed
● The Center Regions alignment was checked, the Dee Tips were sandblasted for cleaning
● The piping between the Mass Flow Controller and the Chimney Selector Valve (N=1 & N=2) were replaced, as were the valves
● Different Ion Source Angles were tested, best yield for 4He at 3°
Copenhagen, 20/06/16 OCL Report by J.C. Müller 7
Ion Source Trouble - Measures to be taken
● The lower Anode Plug will be serviced due to a suspected vacuum leak between the Anode Plug and the Cathode Holder
● Overall regular / annual service of the Ion Source and Center Region
● Replacing the Dee Tips
● Suggestions?

Ion Source Trouble - Anode
● Old Anode– Cracked port covers
– Clogged Gas Channels
– Cavitys in the Gas Channels
– Overall badly burned
● New Anode– Reworked 2 times due to
water leaks
– Finally installed mid-September
– All types of particles were succesfully accelerated
Copenhagen, 20/06/16 OCL Report by J.C. Müller 9
Ion Source Trouble – Upper Anode Plug
● Water Leak– A Swagelok connection was
worn out
Copenhagen, 20/06/16 OCL Report by J.C. Müller 10
Beam Diagnostics
● Deflector Exit Sonde– The sondes housing has
serverely been burned, the sondes probe heads have been shortened to ground and therefore no readout
– The Beam Current Amplifiers work, but on two out of four channles IBA has installed a moving mean value on the PLC which causes huge delays
Copenhagen, 20/06/16 OCL Report by J.C. Müller 11
Radio Frequency System
● ENI RF driver amplifier10Ω Resistors were burned and replaced.
● FlapA fixation pin on one of the gears had sheared off causing the RF to crash.A supporting PVC cylinder was mounted to avoid veering of the drive shaft.
● ResonanceAir hose had burned through on the slider.
