President’s Message

we present the candidate statements and their pictures. Our Nominating Committee, consisting of chair Gary Rubens plus Tammy Vetter and Joe Gilbert, have done a fine job.  We have some great activities coming up. We will be running a Club Med trip in April to Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic. In June we will be running the Bethany Beach Tennis Trip, under the leadership of Megan O’Connor, who ran it last year (and is also running for the Board). This is one of our legacy trips from the Tennis Group: four wonderful days of tennis, dinners, parties, and great camaraderie. Our sailing program will be starting up again, under Patty Hagan’s able leadership, with Potomac River and Chesapeake Bay sails every week. Pete Campbell will be running his golf outing in late April. In July we have a bike-and-barge trip on the Rhine, being run by one of our former presidents, Frank Peñaranda.  We have a great club.   It truly has been an honor to serve as your president. I hope you like the direction in which I have led this organization during this past year.

We are winding down the ski season. Most of our ski trips have gone successfully, although two had to be canceled because of low sign ups. Openings do occur on many trips, even ones reported as full, because of people getting sick, or hurt, or simply having other things in their lives (work?) get in the way. So if you are interested in one of the March ski trips that have not yet run, do contact the leader; often you can fill a vacancy that just occurred.

Our tennis parties remain full. We continue to have our monthly social meetings, happy hours, and parties. The January Tropical Dance Party had to be canceled because a blizzard hit Washington that day, but we hope to make it up with a great St. Patrick’s Day Party. We have over 1,400 members. Our finances are strong. The Club is in fine shape.  In April, we will hold our Club elections. In my previous message to you (in the January/February magazine), I told you we had a full slate of candidates for President and for the Board positions. Since then, one Board candidate dropped out and a new candidate has announced, so we still have a full slate. In this edition of the magazine,

Annual ElectionsCandidate for President, SCWDC

Major Contributions to SCWDC

Member since 1999. President 2015-16. Board of Directors 2013-15. Legal Counsel 2009 to date. Ski trip leader, tennis party leader. Policy Statement I am very proud of what we have accomplished in the last year. A few of the highlights: 1.  We continue to explore ways to increase our membership numbers. We have tried a variety of programs and some of them seem to be working.  2.  We have reformed our insurance, so that now our volunteers are covered for liability claims. We got rid of useless coverage, like covering our marine equipment when we did not own any. We changed insurance agents and have much sharper people working for us. We pay less now for insurance and have better coverage.

 3.   We process credit card transactions more efficiently, through PayPal and Eventbrite. The Board approved the decision to absorb credit card fees, which makes it much simpler for members, event leaders, and program chairs. The costs are substantial, but the increased business is worth it.    4.  We have streamlined our Board meetings, so that routine, uncontested matters are efficiently packaged and passed, leaving time to discuss more significant matters. No Board meeting this year has gone over 2 hours. We get more done in less time. 5.   We have expanded our Club’s activities, to meet the interests and demands of its members. We are doing more bike-and-barge trips, recreation trips like the Dude Ranch, and we have begun a business relationship with Club Med. We are always open to new ideas, although we cannot approve everything that is proposed. 6.  We successfully integrated The Tennis Group (TTG) into SCWDC, with a significant number of TTG members remaining SCWDC members. We have drawn leaders from their talent pool to fill vacancies in our organization. We have incorporated traditional TTG activities like the Bethany trip and the Hilton Head tennis trips to SCWDC offerings, which we will be running this year for the second time.  7.  We ended the policy of allowing Board members and all former presidents to play for free at tennis parties. We are not some nobility entitled to perks; we are volunteers like the rest of the members, and we should be setting high ethical standards by our examples.   8.  Our Club remains financially strong. We have a healthy reserve against losses. Our ski trips are mostly full, our tennis parties are mostly full, and other activities are doing well. We have careful budget controls in place to protect the organization. Naturally, I did not do all this by myself. Some of the ideas were my own, and some came from others which I supported. I had the help of a very hard-working Board of Directors, who approved every project, after a healthy debate and sometimes by a divided vote. We all like and respect one another, and none of our disagreements have become personal. I also had the help of great program chairs who administer the various programs we offer in the Club and often make proposals which I and the Board supported, although sometimes we had to say no for the good of the organization. I am asking for your vote and support for a second one-year term. This is the chance for the membership to approve or not what we have accomplished.  I know I have not pleased everyone and probably made some enemies along the way. Well, I am not trying to please everyone; I am trying to do what is best for the Club in the short and the long run. If you like what you have seen, please vote for me as your president for a second term.

Nominated for Board of Directors

Megan O’Connor

I have been a member of SCWDC for many years and have participated in activities such as Saturday night tennis parties, Sunday instructional tennis, and hiking. I recently was appointed as Chair of tennis activities other than the Saturday tennis parties.

I was also a member of TTG (The Tennis Group) for some fourteen years and was very active in that organization. I hosted round robins, the Holiday party, and led the annual Bethany trip for multiple years. I served on the Board as Tennis chair and as President for two years. As a member of the Board I assisted in the merger of TTG and the Ski Club in April 2015.

SCWDC is a very active and dynamic organization. I believe the health of the organization needs a focus on continuing to grow the membership; develop a strategy to identify and mentor potential leaders for the organization; create new and diverse travel opportunities; as well as continuing those activities so central to who we are.

Volunteering has been a very important part of my life for the past forty years, as in communityorganizing and working with non-profits. I have served on numerous Boards such as Our Daily Bread here in Fairfax, and social service agencies in California. I look forward to using my energy, dedication, and organizing skills to serving the Board of SCWDC.

I’ve been a member of SCWDC for the past 8 years. In that time, I’ve been very active in the club, participating or leading some of the many club activities.   -   Participated in a dozen ski trips-   Personally led several ski trips, most recently to Telluride, CO. Last year I led trips to Vail and Copper Mountain.  -   Participated in the tennis program for two seasons-   Personally led one of the Saturday evening tennis parties-   Participated in the sailing program as a sailboat skipper for two seasons

Other qualifications include:-   Being elected as a board member for neighborhood boards-   Semi-retired Business Development professional and consultant to defense industry clients, helping them bring in new business -   Retired nuclear submarine officer and retired Navy civil servant  -   Currently holding a USCG Captain’s license, up to 100 ton vessels

-   Owner and operator with my wife Cindy of a blue-water cruising sailboat

How do I want to contribute to the SCWDC?-   The single biggest challenge to the club is our aging and declining membership roll. While great progress has been made in recent years, we need to continue finding ways to define our target market and grow the membership within the resources available. I have several ideas on how this can be done, and I will work with the Board to implement them.

David A Toms

Mary K. Hrivnek

For the past 16 years, the Ski Club has given me the opportunity to meet numerous interesting people, form new and long lasting relationships, and participate in fun-filled activities including tennis trips, tennis parties, hiking, sailing, and cultural events. I’ve hosted several tennis parties over the past years and currently volunteer for various activities supporting Ski Club tennis parties. In addition to my Ski Club volunteer experience, I’ve been very active in The Tennis Group (TTG).In 2006, I was elected President. As President, it was very important for the TTG board and me to continue to offer events that brought our members together creating fun and camaraderie for all.We also focused on implementing marketing initiatives to recruit new members. Further, I’ve co-chaired numerous TTG banquets, hosted TTG tennis parties, and co-coordinated the TTG Team Tennis program for 3 years.Regarding my professional career, my work experience includes managing retail stores and providing program support for various companies. My leadership, marketing, and organizational skills enabled me to receive numerous awards for leading teams to increase

sales, customer base, and customer satisfaction. It is now time to give back to the Ski Club and I would be honored to work with the Ski Club board and members. I hope to use my years of professional and volunteer experience to keep the group moving forward by supporting the club’s efforts of fostering new ideas, bringing new members into the group, and continuing to provide activities that will bring fun and camaraderie to all of our members.

Nominated for Board of Directors

Chris Klocek

SCWDC has been organizing great events for 80 years. I am proud to have been a part of this tradition as a member of the Board of Directors for the past two years.

As a member of the Board, I have advocated for improved event management tools. A number of programs, including eastern skiing, sailing, and tennis, now use EventBrite to provide online registration. Since we started using EventBrite, we collected over $65,000 in registration fees for more than 170 events, reducing the paperwork burden on event leaders, participants, and SCWDC office staff. In 2015, more than 1,300 participants registered online for SCWDC events. I have worked closely with program chairs and event leaders to implement online tools. I have promoted the use of Meetup (www.meetup.com/skiclub) and created an Instagram page (www.instagram.com/ski.club.of.washington.dc) to improve our outreach efforts. Please post photos; use the hashtag #SCWDC.

I have led SCWDC trips to Liberty and Canaan Valley. I helped to organize our return to Snowshoe, and in 2015 we had 66 participants on two Snowshoe trips. In 2016, I am leading the SCWDC trip to Sun Peaks, British Columbia.

In the upcoming year, we have a number of opportunities. We can continue to improve our use of online tools and advertising. I am an advocate for sound fiscal management and transparency. I am in favor of using online tools to advertize, organize, and manage events to better serve current members and to attract new members.

In my day job, I work as an economist at the U.S. Department of Agriculture. I look forward to helping the club in the coming year, and I would appreciate your vote. Let’s go ski.

Lunch in Shirlington RideDate & Time: Sundays, 10 a.m. year-round Location: Shirlington Library, 4200 Campbell Ave., ArlingtonLeader: C. Ronald Trueworthy [email protected] 703-525-5197

We meet year-round on Sundays at 9:45 a.m. (for a 10 a.m. departure) on the brick plaza in front of the Shirlington Library /Signature Theater to select a restaurant, then bike a 16-mile loop on the bike trails of Arlington (the Arlington Loop: traveling first on a portion of the W&OD Trail, then the Custis Trail, the Mount Vernon Trail, and the Four Mile Run Trail) with a rest stop at Starbuck’s in Lyon Village, and brief pauses for regrouping as needed. The 3-4 miles on the Custis Trail are hilly; the rest of the ride is pretty flat (average speed on ride is about 10-12 miles per hour; cue sheet available). We should be back by noon for lunch. This is a friendly, social ride; new people are welcome and will soon be part of the regular group. It would be wise to bring a helmet, water, bike lock, money for lunch, and a bicycle in good repair with properly inflated tires. If raining, icy, or temperatures below 40 degrees this ride is a no go.

SAILING PROGRAM Planning this year’s program in the midst of the blizzard of 2016 resulted in really quick responses from our trip leaders! Obviously, everyone is ready for spring to arrive so we can start sailing again! We’ll be sailing on the Potomac River and Chesapeake Bay from May 3 to October 29 and offering lessons also. If you’ve never sailed before, that’s no problem; we’ll teach you through formal lessons at various levels and informal instruction while sailing! Sailing LessonsSailing lessons from novice to expert will be offered by our talented, American Sailing Association (ASA) certified, SCWDC sailing instructors. Our instructors adhere to the SCWDC tradition of having fun while learning. Space is limited so sign up early! Sailing LessonsFor beginners, or those who want to brush up on their skills, we offer a Basic Centerboard Class on 19’ Flying Scots out of Belle Haven Marina on the Potomac River in Alexandria. It is designed primarily for people who have sailed a few times and want to learn more, understand the basics of sailing, or be confident to sail on their own. Through six classes, including four on the water, you will learn how to steer and handle the boat, jibe, tack, adjust the sails for changing winds, dock, and perform man-overboard drills. You also will learn nautical language, knots, and parts of the boat. Graduates will qualify and feel confident to take out centerboard boats in sheltered water. Those who have taken our class before are welcome to attend the classroom sessions at no cost. Students who successfully complete the course and test will receive the American Sailing Association certification. We need at least 4 students for this class. Dates: Ground classes: May 9 and May 16, from 7:15 p.m. to 9:15 p.m. at 2300 Malraux Drive, Vienna, VA 22182; (transportation will be provided from the Dunn Loring Metro upon request) On-the-water classes: May 14, 15, 21, and 22 from 9 a.m. to noon at Belle Haven Marina. We hope to offer a Keelboat Class this summer on the Chesapeake Bay if there’s sufficient interest and we can locate an appropriate boat at a reasonable cost. This class is designed for those who have taken the centerboard class or who feel comfortable taking a centerboard boat out and want to move up to a heavier boat and sail in more challenging conditions. Students who successfully complete the course and test will receive ASA certification. Contact the trip leader to let him know you’re interested. Dates: Dates will be arranged based on students’ availability. Cost: $300 members, $325 guests, (includes text book, exam, and the boat rental). This cost may change depending on the cost of the boat rental.Leader: Scott Hudson, 704-907-0910 (cell), or [email protected], 1454 Park Garden Lane, Reston, VA 20194 For those ready to take a small cruising boat out on the Chesapeake Bay for an overnight sail, we will also offer the Basic Coastal Cruising Course. The objective of this third-level class is to make the student ready to cruise in local and regional waters. It is taught on the Chesapeake Bay in boats about 30 feet long. Subjects taught are maneuvering in and out of a marina, boat preparation and inspection, safety, weather analysis, anchoring, and emergency procedures. The students will improve on previously learned skills to feel comfortable chartering. Students who successfully complete the course may take the ASA test for certification. Contact the trip leader to let him know you’re interested. We need at least 4 students for this class. Dates: Dates will be arranged based on students’ availability. Cost: $325 members, $350 guests (includes text book, exam, instruction, and the boat rental). This cost may change depending on the cost of the boat rental.Leader: Pete Stogis, 301-680-0864 or [email protected]

Planning to Charter?

Most Mediterranean countries and Belize now require that the captain be licensed when chartering a boat. Contact Pete Stogis ([email protected] or 301-680-0864) for options available to obtain the necessary license. Potomac Sails

We sail on the Potomac every Tuesday evening from 6 – 8 p.m. (earlier beginning in late August) and every other Saturday morning from 10 a.m. to noon from Belle Haven Marina

sailing(www.saildc.com). Belle Haven is located on the George Washington Parkway just south of the Wilson Bridge. [Note: This is NOT the marina next to National Airport.] Turn off the Parkway at the Belle Haven Marina sign and follow the road until you see the boats and water, then park. The group meets outdoors, at or near the picnic tables by the marina’s office trailer. Sails begin on Saturday, May 2.

No experience is necessary. We sail very stable, 19’ Flying Scots, each of which has an experienced skipper and often experienced crew. You can go along for the ride or enhance your sailing instruction by participating in boat handling. Our skippers are also excellent teachers and will provide guidance to all interested in learning. After the sails, all hungry sailors adjourn to a local Greek/American restaurant, Primo’s, where we enjoy lunch or dinner in the back room (at separate cost).

Dress is casual. Until the temperatures warm up, long pants and a jacket are good choices, as is layering. Occasionally you may get splashed, and the water in the spring can be cool. There is a restroom if you need to change clothes after work. Sun block, water, hats, and croakies to keep your glasses on your head are also recommended.

Reservations are strongly encouraged – and the only way to guarantee a place on a boat. We reserve the number of boats and confirm our skippers based on the number of people who have signed up 3 days in advance. To reserve, call the trip leader listed below, on the web site, or in the Ski-o-Gram; the latter options will have updated information in case there are changes. If you get a machine, leave your name, phone number, number of people in your group, and the date of the sail; please repeat your name and number slowly so we’re sure we have it correct. Unless you hear otherwise, you have a reservation for that date. Plan to be at the marina at least 15 minutes before the sailing time. The marina is very busy on Saturday mornings and you may have to walk from a distant parking lot so allow sufficient time. The trip leader will collect money, assign people to boats, and get everyone on the water. Exact change, or checks made payable to Belle Haven Marina, are appreciated.

If you can’t make it at the last minute, please call the trip leader, leaving a message if necessary. That way we can check our messages if you don’t show up and give your space to someone who did. If you have a last-minute chance to sail, call the trip leader or come by to see if there’s room. We can’t guarantee it, but we’ll try to accommodate you if possible.

If the weather is questionable, call the marina at 703-768-0018 an hour before the scheduled sailing time to see if they’re allowing boats to go out. The wind can be very different on the river from other areas, so don’t assume there’s too much or too little wind to sail. Sometimes we can’t make a decision on the weather until we get to the marina. If you come and we can’t sail, we’ll head to Primo’s early.

If you have experience as a small boat sailor and would like to possibly be a skipper, please contact Bernie Joiner at 703-560-2203 or [email protected] to arrange a check-out. He will schedule it during one of our regular sails.

The schedule for the first 2 months of Potomac sails is listed below. The remainder of the schedule and updates on trip leaders will be in the magazine, on the website, and in the Ski-o-Gram as trip leaders are confirmed. Potomac Sails:

Every Tuesday Evening from 6:00 – 8:00; please arrive by 5:45.May3 – Leader: Millie Mateu, 703-683-1774 (reservations), 703-598-8144 (after 3 p.m. on day of sail)May 10 - Leader: Eileen Farrell, 703-379-6509May 17 - Leader: Jim Parks, 571-237-4654

Chesapeake Bay Sails

We have several Bay sails planned again this year with Captain Larry aboard Caribbean Magic, a 44-foot C&C based out of Pasadena, MD. The boat is fully equipped with a head, icebox, and bimini to provide shade when it’s hot. Bring your lunch and sun block and you’re ready for a great day, or some snacks for the evening sails. No experience is necessary! Captain Larry will gladly share his extensive knowledge. You can take the helm and help trim the sails, or just sunbathe on the bow if that’s your preference. Enjoy taking pictures or peering through the binoculars to see the beautiful osprey diving with their sharp talons to grab a fish to take back to the nest to quiet the peeping chicks. And as you sail out of the Patapsco River onto the Chesapeake Bay, you can see the Francis Scott Key Bridge and the buoy marking the location of where Key penned the Star Spangled Banner. After a great day of sailing, the fun continues with dinner at a local restaurant (at separate cost).

tennisSki Club Indoor Tennis parties are held almost every Saturday night at tennis clubs in Virginia or Maryland from September through March, and then one party each in April, May, and June. Tennis parties are social events where participants from advanced beginners to advanced players have a chance to play and mingle while enjoying a light buffet and beverages. Ski Club members who reserve in advance with a check mailed to the leader of that week’s party, pay $20 for a Virginia or Maryland party. Non-members who make an advance reservation only pay $5 more. “Phone” reservations pay the “at-the-door” prices, $5 more. All prices are listed on the Tennis Party Application available on the SCWDC web site. Walk-ins (no reservation) are welcome but a playing spot cannot be guaranteed. 2015 winter parties have been mostly filling up in advance.

The Tennis Party Application in this magazine (and also as a downloadable document from the web site) can be filled in, saved, and sent or emailed to the tennis party leader. The application asks for an email address and phone number from every new player, allowing the tennis professional who is setting up the party’s rotation, to talk/correspond to place players in the appropriate ability-level group. We request that you send the application with a check, or email the application after making an advance PayPal payment via the SCWDC Meetup Group or Eventbrite.

An advance reservation is necessary to be assured a playing spot. Currently, PayPal payments are available via Meetup.com orEventbrite.com. The application is available below. Each tennis event posted on the SCWDC web site has links to Meetup and Eventbrite.Plan to arrive between 6:15 - 6:45 p.m. to check in and we suggest you allow ample travel time because of possible traffic delays along the way. a standby and forfeit the entire cost of the party. All but one party are at the Fairfax Racquet Club from 7 – 11 p.m. with almost an additional free hour from 11 – 11:45 p.m. Everyone is assigned two hours of mixed and same-sex doubles. Free tennis lessons are sometimes provided when courts are available. These parties are for adults 21 or older. Party attendance is a mix of very active singles and couples from their late 20s to 60’s. Parties average 64 players each week but some have up to 80 in attendance. Male/female split is close to half and half each party.

The SCWDC rating system is based on U.S. Tennis Association (USTA) standards. If you don’t know about this scale or are not sure of your rating, or have questions about the tennis parties, contact Jack Tarr (Tennis Professional) at [email protected]. A minimum USTA 2.5 (Advanced Beginner) skill level is required. You must be able to keep the ball in play, serve effectively, and know basic tennis tactics. Complete beginners are encouraged to try their local county government recreation programs or tennis clubs for lessons.

You may also attend a party without playing tennis. Just pay $10 at the door and you can eat, drink, and socialize. Bring your racket and wear or bring tennis clothes and you can play from 11 - 11:45 p.m. at no charge. You might also play if someone drops out of the matches. If there is an opening on the court later, you can play at no extra charge.
