Today Jan Weiland is the Vice President of Cascade Investment Group. But only twenty years ago, she was the driving force behind initiating the Southern Colorado Women’s Chamber of Commerce – for which we thank her immensely! When I met with Jan recently, she impressed me as a no-nonsense business leader, but one with incredible patience and grace in sharing this particular story. At the close of our interview, I was convinced she could overcome the obstacles of any storm, real or business-related, and still prosper.

We covered her leadership role from the genesis of her idea for a women’s business group, to the culmination of establishing the Southern Colorado Women’s Chamber of Commerce. She also offered insights on the current status and future of SCWCC.

When Jan relocated from Philadelphia, already a successful banking advisor with the Weiland Group, she began searching for a business organization to replace her east coast chapter membership in the National Association of Women Business

Owners (NAWBO). She visited the few existing business clubs in town (including the Chamber of Commerce, which claimed to support women in business), but found none that offered programs particularly designed for women. She began to think about forming a women’s chamber that would fi ll the niche needs of consistent business programming and provide a venue for discussing those issues unique to women, with other women.

She approached the Colorado Springs Chamber of Commerce (CSCC) for their ideas about forming a Women’s Chamber. Brenda Smith had just been elected the fi rst woman Board Chair for the CSCC and felt that Springs women business owners did not want a separate organization. She stated that since women wanted to do business with men, she believed they preferred an organization where both sexes comprised the membership.

Although little support was offered for the venture initially, Jan was determined to progress along her own path. Even as a newcomer to the area, she’d become very active in making connections with other women-owned businesses, companies and politicians supportive of women-owned business. She sought support in the form of ideas and procedural requirements, obtaining meeting hosts and sponsors from this core group while she continued planning and organizing

a Women’s Chamber. She moved quickly and kept a high profi le by remaining active in the community and joining other organizations … always as “President of the Women’s Chamber.”

Many individuals supported her early efforts, including Susan Presti, the fi rst member to join SCWCC and CPA Cathy Skiles, one of the early board members who eventually became President. The Wagonwheel Council and Pueblo Council of the Girl Scouts were early members

and very supportive of the overall mission. When the organization was incorporated on April 19, 1993, the list of Executive Offi cers included Weiland as President, Leslie Schwager and Mimi Vigil as fi rst and second Vice-Chairs, respectively, and Barbara Johnson as Secretary.

The Independent, Business Journal and the Gazette lent support through great coverage of early SCWCC meetings and the fi rst Woman’s Business Award celebration. John Weiss, Publisher of the Independent, also compiled a monthly “Power Pages” to promote women owned businesses. Dave Pringle, President of the US Bank, was an early adopter through membership and lent valuable support. Other bank Presidents of the time - like Gary Mammel (then with Norwest Bank, which later became Wells Fargo) and Dick Gillespie (of Bank One, later JP Morgan Chase) - sponsored some of the fi rst Accolades events and provided encouragement, refreshments and printed marketing materials.

The very fi rst Women’s Chamber meeting was held at a time when Colorado led the nation in the number of women-owned businesses. Jan’s core working group included Harvard MBA graduate Tracey Bernett, who revealed market statistics and shared fl ow charts in a high caliber marketing presentation. The program demonstrated the group’s professional gravity and purpose, and served well to garner sponsorships and the support of the larger local businesses. During its own corporate transition, Bank One hosted the fi rst unoffi cial meeting - then followed up promptly with the fi rst offi cial meeting reception, underwritten by JP Morgan Chase Bank at the Antlers.

Denver’s Colorado Women’s Chamber of Commerce, also provided Jan and her nuclear group invaluable perspectives on membership drives and programming and generously donated printed materials for several of the early meetings. As you can imagine, the hurdles Jan had to overcome for this great venture included negative press and lack of support from status-quo business leaders and politicians as well as resistance by the local chamber.

Accolades itself originated as an idea from a visiting Elaine Demery, President of the Colorado Women’s Chamber, who shared that an annual event to honor an outstanding woman-owned business had been a resounding success in Denver, and recommended a similar program for the Springs. Soon the fi rst

Accolades Committee was formed with Buck Blessing as chairman, to identify and honor a Woman Business Leader of the Year. Gary Mammel again signed on to help underwrite the fi rst Accolades award celebration, which listed Norwest Banks, KKTV Channel 11 and Telephone Express at the highest levels of support. The newly formed SCWCC proudly selected DeeDee LeGrand, then President of Heisley/LeGrand Advertising, to receive this historic honor.

Many notable attendees came to the fi rst Accolades celebration to represent their businesses in the ceremony. Keynote speaker LaRae Orullian, President and founder of the Women’s Bank of Denver, addressed the many challenges to, and the importance of, new business formation in Colorado. Orullian was also the National President of the Girl Scouts of the USA, and her appearance helped to draw 320 attendees to the kickoff celebration.

Today, Jan views the Women’s Chamber as a dynamic and growing entity, supportive of successful and aspiring women business owners throughout the region. She continues to enjoy the monthly luncheon meetings, where she’s observed the fun and enthusiasm of the attendees, and remains encouraged by the momentum and ongoing strength of the board. She also commented on the quality of programs, the attentiveness of the group and her own pleasure at learning about the varied experiences and triumphs of the speakers.

In her eyes, the Women’s Chamber continues to “do business” very well - and very consistently – largely evidenced by its growing membership. She reaffi rmed, “The Women’s Chamber is a consistent organization which meets the needs of its membership family, as well as that of our community”. She recognized that success to be based on a strong governing board, an ideal location, diverse community and the sincerity the group exudes to its membership and the public.

Past President Kim Woolf Jackson [1999-2000]My husband and I moved back to Colorado Springs from Dallas, in August of last year, and today I work with Wells Fargo as Regional Industry Specialist in Business Banking. We’d been in Texas for two years, where I worked for American National Bank of Texas, as Business Development Offi cer and Retail Manager. Prior to that, I was a Vice President/Client Manager for Bank of America in the Global Commercial group in West Palm Beach, Florida for eight years.

SCWCC provides one of the best networking opportunities for women in Colorado Springs. I’m so pleased to see that the organization has thrived and expanded with vibrant, intelligent women with a wide variety of skill sets. One of my many fond memories from SCWCC included our board retreat at the beginning of my term as President. The retreat was held to share ideas and facilitate our planning session for the year at Marcy Looper’s beautiful home. One of the outcomes was to schedule a ‘done in a day’ project for SCWCC - which eventually was determined

to be a day of painting. The Colorado Springs home belonged to an elderly man that lived alone, and it was two stories. We weren’t skilled painters by any sense, but we were determined. There were at least 20 women and kids that came along. It was a bigger job than anticipated and we had to adjust to a ‘done in two days’ project. It was rewarding and so much fun to share the experience with friends.

When the Southern Colorado Women’s Chamber of

Commerce was started 20 years ago, the Colorado Springs

business community was still very much a “good-old-boys”

community. The business environment is much better

now, but not perfect in every industry for hard-working,

talented women. The SCWCC provides a safe environment for women to come together to network and to improve their business skills through

classes, presentations, input from other women business leaders, etc.

My presidency was during a diffi cult time

for the SCWCC. The organization’s fi nancial situation was not good

and we needed to continue working on

earning the respect of other organizations in

the Springs and expand the membership to

continue as a viable organization.

In preparing to write this, I went online to do a little research about women in business today and came across an article written by Annie Xu for the online magazine Women in Business and Industry (www.wib-i.com). The points made in her June 2013 article align almost perfectly with the mission and purpose of the Southern Colorado Women’s Chamber of Commerce; illustrating how SCWCC is as relevant today as it was at its inception in 1993. Women today have made great strides in the world of business and commerce. Yet there’s still plenty of opportunities for improvement. Most of us can share a story or two of struggles we have faced in a still male-dominated work place.

While I served as president, the SCWCC celebrated its fi rst ten years. We lauded the accomplishments of the fi rst decade and at the same time, board members rolled up their sleeves to develop a work plan to ensure the organization remained signifi cant and relevant going forward.

More than anything we wanted a ‘serious’ organization that offered more than just a monthly meeting with networking opportunities. We wanted to attract successful, established professional women in business as well as the young up-and-comer. We wanted an organization made up of diverse members that provided something of value to everyone who joined or attended a SCWCC function.

We wanted SCWCC to have a voice in the community. Board members participated in women-focused organizations like the Women’s Foundation and Girl Scouts (proceeds from Accolades went toward scholarships at the time). SCWCC was represented at the Diversity luncheons and the Coalition of Chambers. Brenda Quinones, 2001-02 president, organized the fi rst Women’s Summit.

We looked at the structure of the organization and revised the bylaws and organizational chart. We revamped the eight year old membership brochure to explain the benefi ts of membership more thoroughly, as well as the volunteer opportunities available. We created more occasions for women to promote their businesses through program sponsorships and mini-tradeshows.

I’m proud of our body of work. I truly value each and every one of the people with whom I served. Through my association with the Women’s Chamber, I developed valuable relationships and friendships that continue today. For me, SCWCC delivered on its mission and promise: to support, develop and promote women in business through education, information exchange, partnerships and alliances with other organizations promoting commerce, and to create opportunities for women in business.

With over 30 years of experience, Judi Lakin has worked with both for-profi t businesses and nonprofi t organizations in the Pikes Peak region. Currently the Investor Relations/Marketing Director at The O’Neil Group, Judi has a unique combination of effective business skills with a creative background.

Judi started her career in marketing somewhat by accident. Enrolled in UCCS’s MBA program as a fi nance major, she was hired by Vladimir Jones, then known as PRACO, a local advertising agency powerhouse. The combination of her new job and early marketing coursework convinced her to expand her studies to include an emphasis in marketing in addition to fi nance.

Judi credits Nechie Hall, founder of PRACO and her then boss, for mentoring and launching her career in the marketing and public relations fi elds. Starting out as a PR assistant - responsible for making sure the shovel made it to the groundbreaking or the scissors were on hand for the ribbon cutting - Judi left PRACO as the Media/Marketing Director nearly fi ve years later to become the Director of Marketing for the YMCA.

Community involvement has been an important part of Judi’s career. She’s volunteered for a number of local organizations, including the Junior League of Colorado Springs and the Colorado Springs chapter of the International Association of Business Communicators. She served on the TESSA and Girl Scouts boards of directors and currently serves on the Griffi th Center for Children Foundation board. She was a 2005 Woman in Infl uence and a 2003 Woman of Distinction fi nalist.

According to a 2006 Gazette article by Sarah Colwell ... Leslie Eldridge wears many hats. She is the executive director of ViewPointe adult community and assisted-living center in Rockrimmon, co-owner of L&K Enterprises, an English teacher once a week at Remington College, a doctoral student at University of Phoenix, a mother of three, a grandmother of two and the president-elect of the Southern Colorado Women’s Chamber of Commerce. “I guess I’m what you’d call a ‘Type A’ personality,” Eldridge said. And that was before she took the helm of SCWCC, changed its direction, earned her Ph.D and skipped town.

Now Dr. Leslie K. Eldridge has two passions in her career. One is her commitment to helping women in business be successful and the other is providing a warm and loving home for older adults. She’s been working in senior housing for over 20 years, after beginning her career as a Nursing Home Administrator. From there she began working in assisted living and ultimately ended up in independent retirement housing. She has an undergraduate and Masters degree in Business Administration. Her Doctorate is in management, emphasizing in organizational leadership.

Her many leadership roles have included board director for the Department on Aging, committee chair for various civic organizations and, of which

she is most proud, President of the Southern Colorado Women’s Chamber of Commerce for 3 years.

She spends her time following her passions by researching and studying senior housing options and leadership for women. She has published a book based on Baby Boomers and their interest in retirement housing. She is currently writing a book for women on leadership.

Dr. Leslie loves to learn and is passionate about her career. She has worked for Senior Lifestyle for 6 years, 3 years at Liberty Heights in Colorado Springs and 3 years at The Breakers at Edgewater Beach in Chicago, IL. She is inspired by the residents and staff within the senior environment with the many stories they have about their lives and the knowledge they share. She continues to participate in women’s organizations in Chicago to preserve the voice for women in business. Welcome back, for this special occasion!

Lynne Telford [2012] was a rare Business Leader of the Year award winner - in that her work leading Care and Share’s support to the community during the Waldo Canyon Fire was so outstanding that there were no other contenders. She received multiple nominations, and the review committee chose to pre-announce the award for the fi rst time in its history. Look for Lynne to announce this year’s surprise winner!

We asked past winners to refl ect on both the SCWCC’s impact and their feelings about the award itself.

Megan Harmon [2011] The SCWCC provides a safe environment for professional women of all levels to engage in meaningful relationships to support and advance their own personal well-being. If you gathered a group of men together, they would have a different

set of challenges than a group of women with the same level of job responsibility.

We learn differently, interact differently and face different challenges than our male counterparts. In my opinion, the SCWCC is a cheering squad for women in business in the Southern Colorado region. They help you learn skills, meet people and more fully develop to your full potential as a woman in business.

Also, most women are not super great about what I call “victory laps”. I have accomplished a lot in my career and it was nice to be “forced” to take a moment and acknowledge those accomplishments. My Accolades award came at a time that I needed to be reminded what I was doing was important. That it was acknowledgement from a group that I hold dear made it even more special.

C.J. Moore [2007] The Women’s Chamber is the ideal forum for women-owned businesses as well as women in business. It’s a great way to connect with your peers and potential customers. It gives us an excellent way to talk about our companies and to advance the cause of women overall.

It was such a honor to have been considered for this award and then to win it was just one of the highlights of my career. I so appreciate that SCWCC honors women in business like this. I am just so humbled to even be considered with the stellar group of other winners and nominees.

Renita Wolf [2000] Receiving the Accolades award was especially meaningful to me because it recognized both my business and community leadership. As the fi rst one in my family to graduate from college, I know the power of achieving economic self-suffi ciency through education.

Receiving the award allowed me to expand my circle of infl uence to better impact my

community. Throughout my career I have been a leader in promoting economic independence and leadership opportunities for women and children through my work with numerous community organizations.

At U.S. Bank, we take pride in being an active and vital member of the communities we serve. Which is

ACCOLADES ART & ARTISTSThe Accolades Business Leader of the Year receives a handcast sterling silver and 14kt yellow gold brooch inspired by the SCWCC logo. This outstanding piece of original jewelry art is created by Susan Helmich each year, and a contemporary re-design was issued in 2011 - which Susan very generously donated to that year’s lucky winner, Megan Harmon!

Previous winners (beginning in 2002) received an earlier version, and the last of this limited edition series was presented in 2010, when the initial design was retired - leaving those with the fi rst edition in very exclusive company. Scan the room to see how many you can spot!

A year after being named the 1995 Business Leader of the Year, artist and area businesswoman Mary Helsaple was commissioned to create an original artwork as a special recognition gift at Accolades.

Her subject was the Atthis Heloisa Hummingbird, against the backdrop of a rainforest ecosystem,

which refl ected the goals and purpose of the SCWCC. A limited edition of prints were produced, and one is presented to each year’s

This year, Allison Stannard (BobDog Design) adapted the hummingbird motif as an element of our Deco-themed event - and it’s featured on the cover of this publication.

Local graphic artist Deb Tuzel revised the Accolades logo in 2010 by adding the SCWCC signature icon, retaining the star motif and updating the brilliant script font.

Women roared into many areas of life during this exciting decade. Many fi rsts were created in politics, art, literature, sports, business, and philanthropy. Women persevered to claim their right to vote in 1920, which opened fl oodgates of pent-up demand for expanded roles in public life.

Our sister state to the north, Wyoming, boasted the fi rst woman governor, Nellie Ross. Edith Rogers became the fi rst congresswoman from New England and served for 35 years.

The lavender columbine was named Colorado’s state fl ower in 1890 - after which it might have been picked to death, had it not been for the efforts of Colorado State Botanist Hazel Schmoll, who was the driving force behind getting a law passed in 1925 to protect it.

Alice Bemis Taylor was our city’s most noted philanthropist of this decade, and founded Colorado Springs Day Nursery in 1923. It opened Christmas Day, and to celebrate, $20 gold pieces were gifted to its construction workers. She created the Bemis-Taylor Foundation to fund the Child Guidance Clinic

for the psychiatric care of children. She provided the endowment for the Penrose hospital maternity ward, as well as funding the purchase of what is now the Rock Ledge Ranch Historic Site. She donated the organ to Grace Church and contributed millions of dollars to Colorado College, the Fine Arts Center, Day Nursery and the Bemis-Taylor Foundation. She and her husband built La Foret in Black Forest and she was inducted into the Colorado Women’s Hall of Fame in 2010.

Edith Wharton, Edna St. Vincent Millay, and Ellen Glasgow each received the Pulitzer Prize for their literary works. Emily Post published her fi rst etiquette book, which went through ten editions and ninety printings. Margaret Mead published her most famous book.

Helen Wills Moody won the National Junior Tennis Championship, starting an athletic career that spanned another 20 years. Gertrude Ederle was the fi rst woman to swim the English Channel, breaking the previous record by almost two hours.

In February of 2005, fi ve women came together to form the fi rst Board of Directors of the Southern Colorado Women’s Chamber of Commerce Foundation: Lynda Rataczak, Renee Sickles, Sheilla Snell, Jan Weiland and Terry Zarsky. The group organized and incorporated under the Colorado Nonprofi t Corporation Act, were approved by the Secretary of State and then fi led for 501-c-3 status with the IRS, which was approved a year later.

Its stated mission - then and now - is to promote the advancement of women through education, information exchange, partnerships, and alliances with other organizations promoting commerce. Doing so through “collective impact” allows the Foundation to engage Women’s Chamber members in small ways that add up - and their generosity has been remarkable.

Seminar and workshop programs over the years - created to fund the initiative - have included The Other Way to Win, Step Dynamics, Web Thinking, and Who Moved My Cheese?

After partnering with Girl Scouts of America for several early funding cycles, the SCWCC Foundation directed its attention toward supporting women returning to college and chose The Karen Possehl Women’s Endowment as its major fund recipient in 2008. Managed through the CU Foundation, the Karen Possehl Women’s Endowment provides opportunities for talented and deserving women to attend the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs (UCCS). These non-traditional women gain the freedom and confi dence to invest their energies more fully in their coursework and to pursue experiences

Throughout the archived records of SCWCC, the name Terry Zarsky comes up

time and again. A consummate volunteer, she’s served on multiple boards, for

repeated terms, and keeps coming back for more. There’s little she doesn’t know about the SCWCC in particular - and the

community in general - which makes her a truly irreplaceable resource on her own!

Terry has been the Business Services Librarian for the Pikes Peak Library District for 27 years. In this role she

assists those seeking to start a business, grow an existing venture, or help their

employer succeed. She provides business information that

aids in startup formation - like

industry outlook, marketing, demographics, fi nancials, advertising and other topics

pertinent to running a business.

She’s a former board member of the Southern Colorado Women’s Chamber of Commerce,

and currently sits on the SCWCC Foundation Board of Directors. She has served in many

capacities for dozens of business groups over the last 25 years, including the Small

Business Advisory Group, the International Trade Offi ce, and Quality of Life Indicators

publication. She’s held a board seat with the Colorado Springs All Breed Rescue, and

currently volunteers as a foster parent and as the Adoptions Director for the non-profi t.

Terry teaches classes on fi nding a job, starting or managing a business, and investments.

She’s written reviews of new business materials for the Gazette, and works closely

with many local business organizations. In addition to her SCWCC ties, she provides

guidance and training for SCORE, the Small Business Development Center, Pikes Peak

Workforce Center, Regional Entrepreneurial Alliance, and the Black Chamber of

Commerce among others.

She’s often fully booked with speaking engagements for community business

groups, as well as being a panelist for TAP (the USAFA Transition Assistance Program)

and SCORE’s SmartStart workshops. She presents specialized research programs for

the Small Business Development Center, Mi Casa and local colleges, while also fi nding time to meet one on one with people who

need more personalized assistance.

The Foundation has gradually increased its annual gift and today has set a goal to fully fund a KPWE scholarship at the $5,000 level by 2014. All Centerpiece Fundraiser monies raised at Accolades go toward that goal, and smaller benefi t events and raffl es are scheduled throughout the year.


CONTRIBUTORSConnie Neff ... I’m a born nature-lover. My fi rst Fisheries Biologist job was on a Columbia River/Bonneville Power Project and I later journeyed with the U.S. Forest Service working as a Firefi ghter, Fish Biologist, Hydrologist, and Planner. My last offi cial assignment for the “Service” was the Restoration Team Leader for the Hayman Fire in Colorado.

Throughout that career, I prepared documents for technical papers about water quality and aquatic species habitat, did scientifi c writing for Forest Land Management Planning and court document preparation for defense of Forest Management Projects regarding the Clean Water Act and the Endangered Species Act. Upon retirement, I wanted to use my writing skills in a more appealingly popular, but informative manner for small business. My company Clear Path Writer, prepares web content, writes blogs and represents the “social” side of business.

Tascha Yoder owns the Center for Powerful Living which trains, mentors and coaches women to be successful entrepreneurs. She is known for creating an environment of trust and identifying opportunities to leverage simple information into business growth. Tascha has an MBA and is a certifi ed coach; she serves on the the SCWCC Foundation board, and is active in her Rotary Club.

An 18-year veteran of the high-tech industry, Terza Ekholm has successfully navigated the communications channels between corporate executives, engineers, marketing managers and fi eld personnel. She’s now an entrepreneur who leads workshops in self-development, is becoming a Senior Certifi ed Trainer for Send Out Cards. An artist, Toastmaster, wife, and grandmother, she also speaks Spanish, a little Russian, and

runs trails for fun. Drawing upon her diverse experiences, she has become “The Thank You Coach”, to share the joy that gratitude, appreciation, and creativity brings. Thanks!
