We moved from the Veterans Center in Fort Harrison in 2008, to here to complete a long awaited dream to have a home of our own. This building required a lot of sweat equity and money to make it our home and something we could be proud of. Many Marines & Associates spent count- less hours working side by side with their brother & sis- ter Marines and Associates forming a bond of brother- hood within this detachment that you should all be proud of. Our plans for the future for the detachment soon outgrew the building and an opportunity to ac- quire the building we now occupy arose and we moved forward as a detachment, under the leadership of the Marine Foundation of Indiana to purchase it. After al- most a year of renovations and work we are now settled in and after again much time and effort from the Ma- rines and Associates of this detachment, we now have a Barracks to really be proud of. You the Marines, Asso- ciates of this detachment , and let’s not forget our family members and friends who supported us, have a home to meet in friendship and camaraderie with other Marines, to maintain the bond of brotherhood you held in the Corps. But this is just the beginning of a great future for this detachment, and it will take your commitment to help maintain and grow your home and Detachment. Become an active member. “PLANK OWNERS” Be Part of Making a Home for Marines and Family Members to Gather. Be Part of Preserving our Heri-tage and Traditions. Having the title of “Plank Owner” includes certain rights and privileges—including bragging rights of being part of the beginning of a new adven-ture for Marines in Indiana.

Of Interest to Indiana Veterans: House Bill 1109 was passed and is due to be signed by Governor Daniels on 5/11/11 with an effective date of 1 July 2011. This Indiana Code will allow the local BMV to put military information on the driver’s license if requested by the veteran on the application. The veteran will be required to show proof of service, DD Form 214 (or, I assume, its equivalent) at the time he/she submits the application. This will fulfill the wish of many veterans to be issued some proof of service which they can show to organizations which require such proof, without them having to carry their DD214 around. The fact that the driver’s license also contains a photo and an expiration date will make the driver’s license suffice for just about any requirement. _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Veterans House Memorial Brick Project: http://www.indianapolis.va.gov/INDIANAPOLIS/features/Veterans_House_Brick_Memorial_Project.asp _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ New Legislation Aims to Improve Veterans' Employment : http://www.gibill.com/news/hiring-heroes-act-349.html ______________________________________________________________________________________________ Navy researcher links toxins in war-zone dust to ailments: http://www.usatoday.com/news/military/2011-05-11-Iraq-Afghanistan-dust-soldiers-illnesses_n.htm ______________________________________________________________________________________________ Recent VA News Releases: To view and download VA news releases, please visit the following Internet address: http://www.va.gov/opa/pressrel ______________________________________________________________________________________________
