Introduction

"Few things sponsor spiritual growth more than studying from the scriptures. The Savior said, 'He that hath the scriptures, let him search them, and see . . . ' (3 Nephi 10: 14) . The Lord has promised that if you will search, you shall see marvelous spiritual truths that will persuade you to turn to Christ as your great exemplar. You will be strengthened in your desire to make covenants with the Lord, to receive the ordinances, and to serve" (A. Theodore Tuttle, in Conference Report, Apr. 1984, p. 32 ; or Ensign, May 1984, p. 24).

As teachers we need to do all we can to help our students devote themselves to scripture study. Part of our challenge is to pay the price ourselves to master the scriptures. We also need to spend the time necessary to help our students master the scriptures. We should teach students to feast upon the words of Christ, to search the scriptures, and to apply them to situations and problems they face during their lives.

A primary objective of scripture mastery is for each student to learn the location of certain scripture passages, and their historical setting, doctrinal teaching, missionary application, and personal application. Students should be encouraged to memorize the scripture passages as well. By the time they graduate from seminary, students should be extremely familiar with the one hundred scripture mastery passages and should have a strong desire to continue in-depth understanding of pertinent scriptures.

Mastery means control, thorough knowledge, full competence to use or apply, and complete proficiency. Learning the mastery scriptures provides a solid foundation for building a lifetime of scripture study. Success in meeting this objective will depend largely upon your attitude as the teacher. Expecting your students to learn the scripture mastery passages is the key to successfully motivating them to do so.

This guide has been prepared to assist you in helping your students master the one hundred scripture mastery passages. It contains the following material:

1 . The twenty-five scripture mastery passages associated with each of the four courses

2. The historical setting, and a doctrinal teaching,

missionary application, and personal application for each passage

3. An annotation (key word or words) for each scripture mastery passage

4. Several cross-references for each passage 5. Statements or situations relating to each scripture

mastery passage 6. Methods to help students master the passages 7. A variety of ways to scripture chase 8. Helps for memorizing the passages 9. Ways to test students' mastery of the passages

The suggestions in this guide arc not intended as an exhaustive summary of methodology. Please feel free to adapt these ideas to your particular situation.

Many of the methods given are, or can be, based on competition. Competition can easily be overdone; therefore, you should be sensitive to the feelings of students who are not competitive or who are slow learners. Noncompetitive ways to encourage scripture mastery or allowing students to assist one another will help these students enjoy learning the scriptures.

Scripture mastery should supplement the regular seminary study of the standard works. By no means should it overshadow the daily, sequential study of the scriptures. You must be wise in the time you allot to scripture mastery, giving the regular curriculum priority. Home-study teachers must be particularly careful that the weekly class does not turn into a weekly scripture chase.

Students should not mutilate or abuse copies of the scriptures to succeed in activities such as scripture chase. Taping or gluing pages together, laminating specific pages, or ripping pages in an effort to increase speed are not consistent with the respect due the standard works.

You should review the scriptures your students have learned in previous years so that fourth-year students are conversant with the entire list of one hundred scriptures when they graduate.

As a new scripture mastery passage is introduced, each student should mark it in his or her scriptures. The passage should be read aloud, difficult words and ideas defined, and the historical setting, doctrinal teaching, missionary application, and personal application introduced.

Scripture mastery cards are available with each course to help students review and study the selected passages.

Job 19:25-26 Redeemer Lives, Resurrection 1 . Some people incorrectly teach that when we live

after death we will be spirit beings only and that our bodies will never exist again.

2. We can only be resurrected because of the gift of the Redeemer.

3. Even if our present body is destroyed, it will be resurrected in its perfect form.

4. The Old Testament prophets knew and testified that Jesus Christ, our Redeemer, would live again after his death.

Matthew 5 : 14- 16 Example 1 . In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus emphasized to

his disciples the importance of being a visible example.

4. Alan has always been impressed with your example. When contacted by the missionaries, he readily accepted an invitation to listen to the discussions.

Matthew 6:24 Serve God, Mammon 1 . In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus admonished

his disciples to serve God and not worldliness. 2. We cannot serve God and follow Satan's ways at

working overtime to earn a little extra money. However, this requires him to miss church on

Matthew 16: 15 - 19 Revelation, Keys 1 . Explain the Savior's doctrine that his church is

built upon revelation rather than on men. 2. Peter was promised the keys of the priesthood. 3. How did Peter get his testimony that Jesus is the

their purpose. 2. What did the Lord give for the perfecting of the

Saints ? 3. The true Church has the same leadership in all

ages-Apostles and prophets. 4. We need Apostles, prophets, and other leaders to

help us come to a unity of the faith. 5 . The General Authorities and other Church

leaders can help us keep from being swayed to believe false doctrines.

2 Thessalonians 2: 1 -3 Apostasy 1 . In this epistle Paul emphasized the Second

Coming. Before that day a great and widespread apostasy will take place.

4. Ima Investigator was excited to learn that our Church has the restored gospel. From studying the scriptures, Ima knew there had been a falling away after New Testament times and a church was needed to restore the truth.

5. Individual apostasy is always possible, but during and after Paul's time general apostasy was widespread.

2 Timothy 3 : 1 -5 Signs of Last Days 1 . It was foretold that men in the last days would

love pleasure more than they would love God. 2. We are told of many specific sins that we must

turn away from in the last days. 3. Sexual sin is a menace in today's society. Paul

warned us about the days when there would be individuals without natural affection.

4. Karl embarrasses his parents by his actions, clothing, and tastes. He does not seem to care about his family or the Lord. Karl does what he wants to do. The Apostle Paul warned us about the times when people would be lovers of self and disobedient to parents.

5. Pride, boasting, disobedience to parents, and unholiness were prophesied as signs of the last days.

2 Timothy 3 : 16- 1 7 Purpose of Scriptures 1 . Paul explained the purpose of scripture, where it

comes from, and how it can help us. 2. Scriptures are inspired of the Lord. 3. The scriptures can actually help us become

perfect. 4. My friend was doing some things that were wrong.

He was feeling miserable but did not know what the problem was. I suggested he read the scriptures. Now he has repented and is happy.

5. As we read the scriptures, we can find passages that will call our attention to things we are doing wrong.

Hebrews 5 :4 Priesthood Authority 1 . Name a scripture that supports the fifth article of

faith, "We believe that a man must be called of God, by prophecy, and by the laying on of hands by those who are in authority, to preach the Gospel and administer in the ordinances thereof. "

2. A man was out plowing one day. He was tired and stopped to rest. As he looked up into the sky, he saw the clouds form into a peculiar shape. He interpreted this to mean "go preach. " Show from the scriptures that he needed more than clouds to have the authority to preach.

Audiovisual Aids

Audiovisual aids may be used in the scripture mastery learning process and in scripture chasing. After using the appropriate visual or audio, let the students find the applicable scripture and discuss it. Do not use visual and audio aids that are suggestive, vulgar, or inappropriate for a seminary classroom.

Newspapers and Magazines

Show headlines, movie and local advertisements, and pictures to the class or give each zone/group their own newspapers. Allow five minutes to find as many articles, cartoons, stories, or advertisements as possible that pertain to any of the scriptures to be reviewed. At the end of the five minutes, allow each zone two minutes to share the information from the newspaper that relates to the scriptures. Zones could be awarded points for each scripture that is matched to something in the paper.

Local Broadcast News

Whether you copy and replay or simply paraphrase the broadcast, the news has a wealth of application opportunities for scripture mastery. Be careful of copyright infringement.

Audio

Using cassette recorders and record players, play appropriate instrumental music, songs, hymns, sounds, and words. Be careful of copyright infringement.

Video Recorders

Record recent news and advertisements, or produce your own news, advertisements, and stories. Again, be careful to avoid violating copyright laws or using inappropriate material.

Slides and Filmstrips

Many of the audiovisual aids provided by the department or other appropriate slides could be utilized. Avoid any copyright violation.

Use of Programs Taped from the Air

Most programs on television may be recorded from the air. A program taped off the air may be used in the classroom if the following criteria are met:

1 . It may be retained no more than forty-five . calendar days, and then it must be erased. 2. The tape may only be used in the classroom

during the first ten school days following the recording.

3. Generally, only one showing of the tape per class is permitted.

4. Showing of specific segments must not alter the overall message or content of the program.

Method., {Iff Teaching and Review

s . The tapes may not be duplicated for sharing with others.

6. All copies of off-the-air recordings must include the program's copyright notice.

Most pay-television programs deny rights to copy. Recording programs off the air should not be a routine practice.

Bulletin Boards

Bulletin boards or posters are a visual way of continually emphasizing scripture mastery passages.

Examples

1 . A bulletin board centering around the theme of scripture mastery scriptures could be displayed at the beginning of the year with a new passage emphasized each week.

2. Applicable pictures and phrases could be placed around one scripture.

3. A mystery board could be produced with a new clue added daily for the scripture of the week. Each day have the students write down their guess and turn them into their zone/group leader. The zones with the most correct guesses should receive appropriate recognition.

Chaining

Chaining is linking together a series of scriptures that have a common theme or idea. Pick four or five scriptures that relate to the mastery scripture. These could come from the recommended list of cross-reference scriptures provided or from the Topical Guide in the back of the LDS edition of the King James Version of the Bible.

You could circle the scripture mastery verse in the Topical Guide to serve as a reminder of the beginning of the chain.

Examples

1 . Starting with the key scripture, chain it to the next by writing "Go to {reference} . " Chain the second scripture to the third and so on. Cross-reference the last scripture to the first, making the chain complete.

2. Write down three or four references next to the mastery scripture. Cross-reference each of these back to the original scripture.

Problem Solving

One way to help students appreciate the scriptures is to help them see how the scriptures can be applied in their lives. When a student asks a question in class or comes to you with a problem, help him find

the answer in the scriptures. If possible, use scripture mastery passages. Be alert for problems or situations you could use as examples in class. Example

One student has been offended by another. Should she find a way to get revenge? Discuss Leviticus 19 : 18 with the student and help her see that love is more effective than revenge. Have individual or zone/group competition to find an answer in the scriptures to a real life situation or problem. Give students extra credit if they solve the question from the scriptures, or give the answer, and then have the students find a scripture to substantiate it. Have a class question box. Prior to the day the questions are answered, give the questions to class members and assign them to find the answers from the scriptures. Write a few mastery references on the board, and have students pick the reference that answers the question and tell why.

Student Talks

Assign each student a specific scripture mastery passage and adequate time in class or at home to prepare a talk using footnotes, the Topical Guide, and personal experiences. Each talk should have an introduction, the scripture quoted, and a story or example; it should conclude with a testimony of the particular gospel concept addressed. Each talk can last from two to five minutes, and one or two could be given each day. You may wish to evaluate the talks as part of the students' grade or zone/group points. This method should not be used more than once or twice a year.

Chalkboard Thoughts

In a comer of the chalkboard write "Scriptures Have the Answer. " Each day of class, write a question and list a scripture mastery reference that contains the answer. For example, What could I be doing to prepare for my mission? (see Alma 37:35 ) .

Watch for these kinds of references as you study and teach the scriptures. As the year progresses you may wish to have students supply the questions and answers.

Scripture of the Week

Pick a scripture and emphasize it in several ways during the week. 1 . Read it as a class each day of the week. 2. Have a student read it in devotional. 3. Display it on a bulletin board.

4. Have students write it down each day. 5. Have students memorize a portion of the scripture

each day.

Role Playing

Role playing is a technique that uses students to play a role in front of the class to demonstrate a concept, scripture, or story.

Example

Dan has always wanted to go on a mission. Now that he is eighteen, he has a girlfriend and a good job he does not want to leave. Josh is a good friend who would like to see Dan serve the Lord.

Dan's Instruction You want to do what is right but are frustrated with all of your current choices. Listen to Josh and see if he can help.

Josh's Instruction Dan is perplexed but listens to you. Help him by using the scriptures and some good advice. Some scriptures that Josh could use are Doctrine and Covenants 18 : 10 , 15- 16; 1 Nephi 3:7 ; Moses 1 :39; Jeremiah 16 : 16 ; and Matthew 6:24.

Variation

Divide the class into groups or zones. Give each group a mastery scripture and allow them five minutes to plan their demonstration. Each group acts out the scripture at the front of the class. If the class guesses the reference , you may want to award points to the zone that performed and to the zone that guessed correctly. Points could also be given for preparation and involvement.

Learning Aids

Learning aids or individual worksheets can be an effective way of mastering the scriptures. This section contains various methods that you can use to create your own learning aids for students.

Learning aids should be used to help the students develop skills they need in order to better understand the scriptures. Not only should you have the students work through the learning aids, but you should help students identify the skills used in each learning aid. Include these skills in your normal lesson presentation, and encourage students to apply these skills to their personal study of the scriptures.

Methods for Teaching and Review

Many of the activities in the learning aids should stretch students mentally. These activities can serve as a springboard into meaningful class discussion. Name Substitution

Students can be encouraged to substitute their own names for the names of individuals in a particular scripture. This technique serves to help personalize the scripture so the students understand how the scripture applies to them. For �xample, Doctrine and Covenants 64:9 reads, "Wherefore, I say unto you, that ye ought to forgive one another " (emphasis added) . Using name substitution, the verse would read, "Wherefore, I say unto [your name] , that [your name] ought to forgive [anyone who offends you] . "

Verse and Word Understanding

Ask the students to abridge or summarize the scripture mastery verse, being careful not to change the meaning. Or, encourage students to look for words or phrases which if left out could change the meaning. Discuss which words would be most essential if the verse were limited to (eight) words or less.

Choose words that are synonyms of the important words in the scripture, and have students use those words to write a paragraph that has the same meaning as the scripture. You could also challenge students to write a short paragraph about what the scripture teaches. Remove all the vowels (A, E, I, 0, U) from the scripture , and have students write in the correct words above the letters. Make sure they can define all of the words.

Chapter Headings

Ask questions about the headings to help the students gain insight into the verses being studied.

Suggest that students read the section or chapter before reading the heading, and then ask them to write their own chapter heading. Students should then compare theirs with the ones in the scriptures.

Find an edition of the scriptures without the current chapter headings. Compare the two editions to help students understand the contribution of the scripture editions now in use. Footnotes, Index, Topical Guide, and Cross-references

Ask students questions that will stimulate the use of the footnotes, index, Topical Guide, and cross-references.

Have students circle or underline what they believe to be the most important words in a scripture passage. Sometimes it helps to suggest a certain number of key words that they should find.

Defining Difficult Words or Phrases

Identify phrases from a mastery scripture and have students put the phrases in their own words. Guide this activity to ensure accuracy . You could also have students write definitions for words you have identified. Compare their definitions with dictionary definitions. Make a list of difficult words from the scripture verse. Have the students match them to modem terms you have listed. Another option would be to list difficult words or phrases on the learning aid; then prior to class discussion, have students check the meanings of any words they do not understand.

Personal or Life Applications

Ask students specific questions on how they can apply the scripture to their own lives. Be sure to ask questions that will help your students identify their own feelings about the scripture and its teachings. To apply a scripture to their own lives, have students make commitments as the scripture is studied.

Help the class identify what they feel is most important in the scripture. Ask each student to prepare a list of things he or she can do to better live the principles taught. Writing Questions

As they read the verse, have students write questions about concepts they do not understand. After completing a few learning aids, have your students use their own ideas to create a learning aid by developing questions that will help fellow students apply the scripture. You may want to use this as a group rather than an individual activity. Crossword Puzzle

Construct a crossword puzzle using the annotation for each mastery scripture, or use specified key words of your choosing. The clues could be the scripture references or written situations. If you have second-, third-, and fourth-year students, you may want to . include scriptures used in previous years. This could also be used as a take-home review. True or False Exercise

Ask students a question or give a statement which is either true or false. Have them prove the statement true or false by turning to the appropriate scripture mastery passage. For example, The Holy Ghost has a body of flesh and bones (false; see D&C 130:22- 23) .

Caution and wisdom should be used any time a game is played in the classroom. The game itself should not overshadow but should facilitate learning, and care should be taken that the Spirit is not offended. There are a number of enjoyable activities described on the following pages, but they should be used sparingly and never as a substitute for the basic scripture curriculum. Including ideas for learning games is not an endorsement for their indiscriminate use.

Concentration

Prepare a concentration board (see the example below) . It could be drawn on the chalkboard, made into a transparency for an overhead projector, or made on a plywood board with hooks attached. A transparency can be shown on the chalkboard so that when a match is made, you mark an X through the matched squares. If a transparency is shown on a screen, cover the squares with small slips of paper. You will also need a control sheet (see the second example) .

On one square put the scripture reference and on another the scripture annotation. The chase works like the game of concentration. A zone/group calls out one of the numbers, and you tell them what is found on that square. They then call another number, and you read what is found there. They have five seconds to decide if the two squares match. If the two squares match and the zone says they do, the zone gets a predetermined number of points and another tum. If the squares match and the zone says they do not, their tum is over. (Do not say anything. Allow a zone who knows it is right to get the points later. ) If the squares do not match and the zone says they do not match, the zone's tum is over and another zone gets a chance.

Scripture Games

If the squares do not match and the zone says they match, award bonus points to all the other zones. Do not allow students to use their books, although if the activity is used early in the year books could be allowed. This game of concentration can be used as a review for a test.

Draw a Tic-Tac-Know grid on the chalkboard for each zone/group. Each square of the grid should have A I a small number corresponding to your copy. Refer to IV (l the following examples. '-"

Every zone takes turns choosing a square on its grid and calling its number. Give the zone a scripture clue, and have them identify its reference from memory. Let the zone members consult with each other for five to ten seconds. The zone leader then gives the answer. If it is correct, an X goes in the square. If the answer is incorrect, an 0 goes in the square. Each correct answer is worth five points for the zone. The first zone to get Tic-Tac-Know, three Xs in a row, scores additional bonus points.

Variation

Make one large board for the class, and have each zone try to get three X s (or whatever symbol they choose) in a row. To get an X , they must correctly give the reference in five seconds or less.

Scripture Pictures

Divide the chalkboard into as many sections as you have zones/groups competing. If you have a small chalkboard, have one zone representative at a time go to the board. Have a representative from the first zone draw a picture of the scripture selected by the zone without using any numbers, letters, or words. The first person in the class to identify and locate the scripture gets a point, or you may choose to give zone points. You might also rotate into the artist's place in each zone and compete with the students.

Scripture Bee

The scripture bee activity is most effective if held outside class time with students from different classes or seminaries competing against each other. In large seminaries, fourth-year students could compete against each other using all one hundred scripture mastery passages, third-year students using seventy-five scriptures, second-year students using fifty scriptures, and first-year students using the twenty-five they have received this year. Awards for this activity may be appropriate. The rules are as follows:

participants. The cards should remain in a pile on the table in front of each student. The object of the game is for a player to get rid of all his or her cards. To play, a student picks up the top card from his pile and places it scripture side up in the center of the table. He then declares the reference. Any student can challenge his answer, which is checked by turning the card over where the scripture reference is printed. The following consequences are possible: If the scripture reference is named correctly and no one challenges, the card stays on the pile on the table. If the scripture reference is named correctly and is challenged, the challenger puts the card at the bottom of his pile. If the scripture reference named is incorrect and is challenged, the player takes back his card and all other cards in the pile into his pile. If the scripture reference quoted is incorrect and none of the other students challenge, the player takes the card back and places it at the bottom of his pile. If no one challenges, the card is still turned over to verify if the student was correct. The activity continues until one person has no cards left. He is the winner.

A proven way to help master the scriptures is scripture chase. This section includes a variety of methods and sample situations. Remember that the main objective of scripture chase is to help students master the selected passages.

Basic Scripture Chase

Materials Needed

Each student needs his or her personal copy of the standard works. Preparation

Divide the class into zones/groups, and appoint a leader. Procedure

Read a scripture passage, a situation, or an annotation related to one of the mastery scriptures. You may let students begin looking for the scripture as soon as you start reading, or you may have them wait until you say "go . " Give them a predetermined amount of time to locate the scripture. When members of a zone find the scripture, they raise their hand or put a hand on top of their book to indicate to the zone leader that they have found the scripture. When all zone members have found the scripture, the zone leader stands up or raises his hand.

Scripture Chase

Competition for a scripture ends when a specified amount of time has elapsed or when a specified number of zones/groups have found the scripture. There are several scoring possibilities. Points can be given for each individual student who has the correct scripture, for each complete zone with the correct scripture, or for a specified number in the zone finding the scripture. You can give an additional speed point for the first student in the class to find the scripture. You can also give a different number of points to the first, second, and third zones to find the scripture. If zones tie, give them equal points. Teams can be disqualified for a scripture point if there is talking or showing scriptures during competition, or if the wrong reference is cited. As an alternative you can specify that they may help each other. If you desire to determine the winning group in your class and the groups differ in size, you may want to divide the final number of points a group scores for the day by the number of people in the group.

Basketball

Materials Needed

1 . A basket (A wastebasket will do. ) 2. A ball. A small, soft ball is preferable. Balls made

of paper ancl/or tape can also be used. Playing the Game

Before beginning the game, mark three places of varying distances from the basket: one to represent a two-point shot, one a four-point shot, and one a six-point shot. This activity is similar to regular scripture chase. A point is scored for each person in the zone who finds the correct scripture. Each zone with all members finding the correct scripture chooses one representative to go to the front of the room and attempt a shot at the basket from the two-point range. If successful, they move to the four-point range and then the six-point range. A zone cannot send the same person to shoot the ball twice in a row. Variation

Allow the person who gets the speed point to shoot.

Fast Break Chase

Materials Needed

1 . A wastebasket or other type of container for each zone.

2. An overhead projector and screen. 3. A transparency with five annotations (one for

each scripture used) for each round played. (See the example following the scoring instructions. )

4. An answer sheet for each zone with the annotations and references identified.

5. A blank sheet of paper for each zone/group. 6. A stopwatch or a watch with a second hand. Playing Rules

Arrange the zones in rows. Give the last person in each row a blank sheet of paper. Place the transparency with the annotations on the projector, and tum it on so that all the annotations can be seen. Begin timing. The zone member beginning (the last person in each row) sees the first annotation, looks up the reference, writes it on the paper, and hands the paper forward to the next person. If he does not know the reference, he may ask the person in front, who can ask the person in front of him until someone can pass the answer back to the one chasing. He must then look up the reference before he can write it down. No one can leave his seat to pass a reference back. Each zone member follows this

Athletic Variations of Scripture Chase

procedure, turning to the next scripture on the transparency. When the paper gets to the first person in the row, that person writes down the last reference, gets the answer sheet from the teacher, returns to his or her seat, checks the zone's answers, wads up the paper, and throws it in the wastebasket in front of the zone. If the student misses, he or she has to retrieve the paper and try again until making a basket. When the first zone completes their "fast break" by making a basket, the teacher says "stop ." He then writes that zone's time on the chalkboard. It is important to do this at the end of each round. The teacher should read the correct references for the zones that did not finish. For the next round, the first person in the zone moves to the last seat, and everyone else moves forward. Scoring

Each zone gets a predetermined number of points for each correct scripture they found. The first zone to find all the scriptures gets an additional number of points. The zone with the fastest time at the end of several rounds gets extra bonus points. Example Round

Explain the bowling marks and point keeping, which should be recorded on the score sheet after each scripture chase situation. Example

Read a scripture or a situation, and say "go. " Keep track of the seconds. When five seconds have passed, call out "strike"; after ten seconds, call out "spare"; and, finally, after fifteen seconds, call out "open. " This ends the frame. The first thing a student heard you call out after locating the correct scripture is his or her score for that frame. A student who did not find the correct scripture within fifteen seconds does not score any points. The zone leader then asks each person's score and records X, /, 0, or - . The zone leader will then record the points earned, keeping a cumulative score for each person (see sample score sheet) . The game continues in this manner until the tenth frame, where there are four possible scoring opportunities.

First, a participant who gets no score in the tenth frame is finished and can total his points. Second, a participant who gets an open frame in the tenth frame gets ten points and can figure his score. Fourth, a participant who earns a strike in the tenth frame gets twenty-five points and two more scripture chase situations. The total of all three situations are then added to his or her total. Golf Chase

Prepare an individual score card like the one shown above. Remember, in golf the lowest score wins. Give each student a score card. Give the scripture clue, and count to ten at whatever pace is appropriate. The students find the correct verse and record the first number you called after the scripture was found. Give the answer so students can be sure they are correct. The lowest score for each clue is one. Eighteen would be a perfect score (see score card) . A student who does not find the verse must take a ten as a score . You may wish to score this individually or to have all the members of a zone/group add their final scores together for zone points. Variation

Certain materials are needed: a golf ball, a putter, and a ball return machine or a small box with a hole cut in it. A shoe box works very well. Give a scripture clue and say "go ." The first zone/group to have everyone find the scripture gets points. Someone from that zone also gets a chance to score more points by putting the golf ball. For putting, put tape on the floor at three different distances, such as a five-point range, a ten-point range, and a fifteen-point range. Let the person determine what distance to putt from. Points are given if the ball goes in the hole. You may wish to let the first person to find the scripture do the putting.

Track Meet

General Instructions

Read the clue, and have the students begin when you say "go." Counting begins as soon as the scripture clue is given. A person scratches ( is out of the competition) by touching his or her book too soon, failing to find the correct scripture in the time given, or exceeding a predetermined score for an event. Give students a number for each event to represent scratch. That number will depend upon the type of track or field event. When you count up, it will be the highest number given, and when you count down, it will be the lowest number given. As an alternative, you could record the event, clues, and count on a tape recorder. In each event the students record the first number they hear you say after they have found the scripture.

ALhletic Variations of Scripture Chase

You could make up other events in addition to the ones below.

One-Hundred-Meter Race

Run three heats. Heat one should have the hardest clue and heat three the easiest clue. Begin your count with seven and count up to twenty-two, for about fifteen seconds of countin!;. Each number represents one second. Scratch would be twenty-two or higher.

Fifteen-Hundred-Meter Race

In this race you will use ten different scriptures. Give the first clue, say "go ," and begin to count from five. When you get to fifteen, give the answer to the first situation and have students record their scores. Then give the second clue. Continue this procedure until all ten scriptures are given. The scratch number for each round is fifteen. Students add up the ten different numbers to get their time.

l lO-Meter Hurdles

The hurdles are similar to the one-hundred-meter race. Begin your counting with ten and count up to thirty.

High Jump

Begin the competition at six feet and move up in three-inch intervals. Those students locating the passage in a predetermined number of seconds have cleared the height. Allow up to three misses per height. Stop the competition at no more than eight feet.

Pole Vault

Pole vault is played the same as the high jump. Start at fifteen feet and go up to twenty-two feet in six-inch increments.

Shot Put

Give the scripture clue and begin counting down from seventy to forty. The number you say after the student finds the reference becomes the number of feet the shot was thrown by that student. You may want to allow students three attempts and have them record their best score.

Javelin

Handle the javelin the same way as the shot put, but start your count at two hundred seventy and go down to two hundred.

Drag Race

You will need paper and a pencil for each student. Prepare a cassette tape before class or conduct the game live. Taping it gives you a chance to circulate around the room. On the tape, you could record the sound of engines revving up as you welcome students to the drag races. You then give a clue. As soon as you finish

the clue, the students begin turning to the correct scripture. When you finish giving the clue, you begin counting down from ten. When you reach zero, give the reference. As the students find the references, they record the number they heard first after finding the scripture. If they have the wrong reference, they do not score. You can go as many rounds. or races as you want. At the end of the race, have students total their points. High point total wins.

Bid a Scripture

Each zone/group chooses a representative. Two zones will compete each round. You determine the rotation order {zone one against zone two and so on} . The participants sit in chairs in the front of the class. They cannot use their books. The chase proceeds as follows:

First, give a clue to let the students know the book or part of the book the scripture is coming from.

Next, the contestant who is to be first says, "I can name that scripture in words. " Suppose the first student said four words. The other contestant could either say, "I can name it in three words" or challenge the first contestant to name the scripture.

Once one of the contestants has challenged the other to name the scripture , read from the beginning of the verse the number of words the contestant said he or she could name it in. If the contestant gives the correct reference, his or her zone gets the designated number of points. If the first contestant misses, the other contestant can try. If the second student fails, turn to the class and give them the words again. The game then becomes a regular scripture chase. Award points for the first individual to find the passage and for the first zone to find it. Note: Do not let students look up the reference until you have given the class the clue. You should not give more than nine words.

Scoring

Challenge Chair

The objective is to end up in chair number one or to advance as far forward as possible. Begin by arranging chairs in pairs in a semicircle in the room. With students occupying the chairs, give a scripture situation or annotation. When a student finds the correct reference, he reaches over and touches the desk of the student he is paired with_ The winner of each pair moves up to the next pair of desks, and the loser of each pair moves down to the next lower pair of desks.

One-un-One and Individual Scripture Chase

There are only two students who might not move, the winner if he or she is already in desk number one and the loser if he or she is already in the last desk. If during a given round the students in a pair tie, give a tiebreaker to those two students to see who rotates up and who moves back.

Quick Draw

Students are paired either sitting or standing depending on the variation you use. The winner is the first one to find the correct scripture after the clue has been given. Variation One

The entire class stands, and a scripture clue is given. A student who finds the reference within ten seconds remains standing. Anyone who does not locate the correct reference in the time limit sits down. As more clues are given, less time is given to find the scripture until only one quick draw is left standing. Variation Two

Instead of the entire class standing, only the boys stand. They compete against each other until there is one winner. The girls then compete with each other until there is one winner. The boy and girl champion then square off and draw against each other. The fastest with three out of five scriptures is the winner. Quick draw can also be played putting stakes, wards, high school classes, or zones against each other.

Stump the Zones

Each zone tries to stump the other zones. One zone member reads five consecutive words from a scripture. The class has a given time limit to find the scripture. The zone scores one point for each person in the other zones who does not find the reference. Continue until all zones have had an equal opportunity.

Clue

Choose four or five key words from each scripture. Some of them should be quite general and difficult to find, and others should be very specific giveaway clues. To chase, read one of the words from a given scripture. Read the difficult words first. Wait five seconds, then read the second key word for the same scripture; continue this until the last clue, which should be so obvious that everyone will know the scripture. The students may begin chasing as soon as the first key word is read. In scoring, allow the most points for zones or individuals finding the reference after the first clue and less for each additional clue.

Five In a Row

The object of this game is to fill all five boxes in a row for fifteen points. Each student is given a score sheet similar to the one shown. The student colors in the blank box in column one (see the example) . � ou then give a clue. After ten to twelve seconds, time is called. If the correct reference has been I cated, the student colors in box two in row one and continues through the five boxes in row one until reaching box fifteen, providing he or she finds the correct reference with each clue.

A student who gives an incorrect reference colors in the blank box in column two and continues in that column until reaching the top box or failing to find the correct reference. Every time an incorrect response is given, or the scripture is not found in time, the student moves to the next column.

To determine the final score, have the students tally the number of points in the boxes they colored in. The game does not require that all twenty rows be used.

Make up twenty-six markers, and label them: freebie, A I , A2 , A3 , A4, A5 , Bl , B2 , B3 , B4, B5 , Cl , C2, C3 , C4, C5, 01 , 02 , 03 , 04, 05 , E l , E2 , E3, E4, and E5 . Give each student a game grid.

Every student randomly draws one scripture man, one scripture woman, one bomb, one temptation man, three smiling faces, and eighteen scripture pellets in the various squares. You then give a situation or scripture clue. A student who finds the reference in ten seconds or less can mark off a square on his sheet. To determine which square is marked off, you pull a marker out of a cup or jar and read it to the class (for example, A I , B3 , or 04) . All the students who found the scripture check off the square called out and record their points for that round. When the freebie mark is drawn, the students mark off the square of their choice. Preparation

Before class list on the chalkboard the scripture references that are to be reviewed. Prepare one or two situations or problems for each scripture to be reviewed.

Procedure

When it is time to begin the review activity, have each student write the chalkboard references on a zingo sheet. There should only be one reference per block. If there are more blocks than references, have students use the references more than once.

Give a scripture clue, and have the students try to find the correct scripture in a specified amount of time. If they find the scripture, they put an X through the block or blocks on their zingo sheet containing the correct reference.

Continue to read the situations until a student calls out zingo. A student who calls out zingo must then read off each scripture reference so you can verify the references. The game continues until a student has zingo horizontally, vertically, diagonally, or, if specified, has marked off all the blocks in the zingo sheet.

Battleship

Materials Needed

Before class prepare a completed Battleship board. Include a battleship (four B s in consecutive spaces) , a destroyer (three Ds) , a carrier (two Cs) , a submarine (one S ) , and four mines (draw four separate bombs) . Ships can be marked horizontally, vertically, or diagonally (see example) . No speed point is given in this chase.

Give a blank grid to each student to keep track of hits and misses, using an X for hits and an 0 for misses. Begin with a regular scripture chase. Let the first two zones who find the scripture shoot at the ships. They designate which square by calling a letter and a number. For example, B5 or G3. Points are awarded if they hit a ship. Suppose zone one was first to find the scripture and they selected C5 . Each student would record whether it was a hit or a miss. If they hit a ship, they would get one point and could keep guessing until they missed or hit a mine. When they miss, then the second zone guesses. When a team sinks a ship by guessing the last of the squares it fills, they get all the points that ship is worth. If they hit a mine, they loose a tum and four points. Scoring

Missionary Chase

Each zone/group appoints a missionary to represent their zone. The missionaries go to the front. They do not need their scriptures because they will use investigators' scriptures. Each time this is played, each zone chooses different missionaries.

Miscellaneous Scripture Chase

The missionaries have three minutes to convert as many classmates as they can. Those who are not missionaries are considered investigators. Each investigator is given a situation. The answer to the situation will be a scripture mastery passage. When you say "go ," the missionaries approach anyone in the class and ask, "What do you know about The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints? Would you like to know more?" The investigator reads a situation, such as, "Only if you can show me that we are created in the image of God. " If the missionary opens the investigator's scriptures to the correct reference ( in this case Genesis 1 :26-27) , the investigator is recorded as a convert. The missionary then tries to "convert" another investigator. Scoring

If an investigator purposely stalls, trying to prevent the missionary from scoring, the investigator's zone loses five points. The missionary's zone is awarded five points for each convert plus an additional ten points for converting one person from each zone. Variation

Send your top missionary to a foreign mission (another teacher's room) . Exchange missionaries. Of course, this will work only if other teachers in the seminary are using the same method. Variation

Half the class are missionaries and half are investigators. All missionaries are sent at the same time. Each missionary keeps a card to record the names of "converts. " Missionaries use their own scriptures; otherwise the same rules apply. After five to seven minutes, the missionaries and investigators change roles.

Individuals

Give the class a scripture clue. The first person to raise his or her hand with the correct answer receives points for the zone/group, and for each correct answer you drop a small piece of candy into the cup. When enough candies have been placed into the cup to outweigh the paper clips, the cup will fall. The individual who causes the cup to drop receives the candy for his zone, and the game can begin again. By Zone

To play by zone the teacher gives the key words or situations and the entire zone must find the scripture. The zone who drops the cup receives the candy.

Scripture Journey

Each student needs a copy of the map, Passover Road. A student starts the scripture journey at the Mediterranean Sea and tries to arrive in Jerusalem. Give a clue to the class and then count backward from ten. A student who locates the scripture moves forward as many spaces as the number heard immediately after finding the reference. For example, a student who found the reference just before you said six, would move forward six spaces. It may take fifteen to twenty minutes to complete the journey. Part of the fun, however, is to tell the class, "Today we will only be playing for ___ _

minutes. See if you can make it to by that time ." A variation could include doubling of moves-odds go forward and evens go backward. Appropriate maps could be created for other courses.

Hangman

Each student should draw hangman gallows on a blank piece of paper. Give a clue and let the students chase against the clock for ten or fifteen seconds. If they fail to find the scripture, they add a part of the body to the gallows. Be sure that the parts of the body they add before a student is "hung" are predetermined, such as head, body, arms, and legs.

Scripture Puzzle

On a sheet of poster board draw or paste a picture representing a scripture mastery passage, and cut the picture into several puzzle pieces. You will need a picture representing a different scripture for each zone. The task is for each zone/group to reconstruct the picture, identify the scripture, and locate the reference within the time limit.

Scripture Relay

Arrange the zones/groups so each zone occupies a complete row of seats from front to back. Give a sheet of paper to the last person in each row. Make sure the first person in each row has a set of scriptures. Give a scripture clue. When you say "go, " the students in the last seat of each row write down what they think the reference is and pass the paper forward to the next person in the row. That student looks at it and passes it on if he 0r she agrees with it. If the student does not agree , he or she crosses out the reference and writes the correct one. The sheet works its way along the row in this manner. When the answer sheet reaches the front student in the row, that person must decide if the reference is correct. If it is correct, he or she must locate it in the scriptures. If it is not correct the student may change it and locate it in the scriptures. The student then raises his or her hand, indicating the zone has finished. You check the sheet and the scripture reference found. If they are correct, the zone receives a certain number of points. The student in the front of each row moves to the back seat, and everyone moves up a seat. You give another scripture clue, and the relay starts over again. Variation

Require each person to write a scripture reference on the sheet as it moves along the row. A team member may write down a reference that is already on the sheet, or a different one if he or she thinks the reference is wrong. This variation gets everyone involved, even though everyone may not know the scriptures well.

Hot Seat

Arrange each zone/group in a row. Tum the front desk in each row around so it is facing the other students in the zone. Give a clue. The students in the front desks are the only ones to begin chasing. The other students must keep their scriptures closed. As soon as a student in a front desk finds the scripture, he yells "go, " and the team begins chasing.

Award speed points and zone points. Speed points are only earned from the front desks. Zone points go to whichever zone gets all their hands up first. After each round rotate different people to the hot seats.

Object Chase

Materials Needed

Find an object or picture that represents each of the scriptures to be reviewed, for example:

1 . Money (see Jacob 2: 18- 19) 2 . Hymn book (see D&C 2 5 : 1 2) 3 . Clock or picture of someone running (see

Genesis 39:9) 4. An idol (see Exodus 20:3- 1 7) 5 . Picture of two people talking (see Exodus 33 : 1 1 ) 6 . Candle (see Matthew 5 : 14- 16) 7 . Picture of angel Moroni (see Revelation 14:6-7)

Each student should have scriptures, a pencil or pen, and a piece of paper.

Preparation

Put the objects in a box or bag so they can be revealed one at a time. Before the activity have students number their papers to match the number of items you have. Students can participate as individuals, pairs, or zones.

Procedure

Reveal one item at a time. Allow students thirty seconds or so to determine which scripture the object represents. Students should be encouraged to use their scriptures jf they need them.

After thirty seconds tell students they must write down a scripture reference. Present another object. Leave the objects out so students can continue to think about them.

Once all the objects have been presented, allow students a few minutes to make changes on their list of scriptures. Next, give the correct reference for each object, and award points for each correct answer.

Paper Chase

Each student needs a pencil or pen and a piece of paper. Have the students number both sides of their papers from one to the number of scriptures being reviewed. Procedure

Read a scripture reference, a situation, or an annotation related to the scripture and count aloud to ten. Students write down what they think the reference is. If students cannot put down the reference within ten seconds after you have read the reference, have them write IDK for I don't know. After reading all the scripture references, give the correct answers. Have students check their own papers by marking the ones they missed and writing the correct references. Ask which scriptures were missed, and review those scriptures with the class. Then have students tum their papers over. Give the clues again in a different order. Have the papers corrected, and check improvement.

Fishing Chase

Materials Needed

Each zone/group will need one 114" dowel three feet long with a string attached for the fishing line and a bent paper clip for a hook. You will need to make a fish for each scripture situation. Use five-by-seven cards folded in half with holes punched in the middle of each fold (see example) . These cards are the fish. Write the annotation on the card or clip it to the card.

Place all the fish cards, creased side up, on a table. They will look like small tents. One person from each zone comes forward with the fishing pole. On signal they begin to fish by trying to hook the bent paper clip in the hole on the card. They must hold on to the end of the pole and not touch the line with their fingers. A student who hooks a fish lifts the card from the table and takes it to his or her zone. The zone then reads the situation, and everyone finds the verse in the scriptures. You may want to let zone members help each other.

You do not have to be a musician to use this idea. A student at the piano or a prerecorded tape of a hymn is equally effective. Play the hymn that is the scripture clue. Students then chase for the appropriate reference. Students must justify the reference they choose. Students can then share and discuss other related references. Some possible clues include the following: a. "We Thank Thee, 0 God, for a Prophet"

(Hymns, 1985, no. 19) . Amos 3 :7 b . "How Firm a Foundation" (Hymns, 1985 , no. 85 ).

Helaman 5 : 1 2 c. "I'll G o Where You Want M e to Go" (Hymns,

1985 , no. 2 70) or "Quickly I'll Obey" (Sing with Me, B-36) . 1 Nephi 3 : 7

Some hymns have many related concepts that lend themselves to effective phrase analysis. For example, see how many mastery verses you can apply to the hymn, "More Holiness Give Me" (Hymns, 1985 , no. 13 1 ) .

Riddle Chase

Make up riddles from the concept of each mastery scripture. Read a riddle to the class. The students

I Remembering what the Doctrine and Covenants says, Kevin got up, knowing that the Lord keeps his promises (see D&C 82 : 10). I He knew that if we want to receive blessings from the Lord, we must keep the commandments that \ lead to those blessings (see D&C 130:20-2 1 ) .

\ \ As Kevin entered the kitchen, he saw the iron on 'his new shirt. Just then his sister came in and 'grabbed the iron. It was too late; the shirt had a new brown design. She timidly apologized. Kevin was so upset he didn't know if he could ever forgive her (see D&C 64:9- 1 1 ) .

Typewriter or transparency marker To make your own slide, trace the inside and outside of a slide mount on a transparency. Write or type the annotated words or reference on the transparency. Cut your slide from the transparency. Place the slide inside the mount, and iron it closed.

Chasing

As you show a scripture reference or annotation, the students should locate the scripture as quickly as possible. Give the students only eight to ten seconds with each slide. If the projector has an automatic timer, you can scripture chase with your students. Slides may also be used on an overhead projector. Variation: Elimination Chase

Each student stands or remains standing if he or she can find the scripture before the projector changes to the next slide. Winners are those who remain standing at the end.

While it is not required that students memorize all one hundred scriptures, they should be encouraged to do so. The following are methods that can be used to help students memorize scripture mastery passages.

Awards and Recognition

Visible awards and recognition will motivate many students to memorize on their own. Awards must be given soon after completion to be effective. Awards and recognition can be overemphasized or cheapened, so make sure the awards are meaningful and are in harmony with your area director's guidelines. The following methods have proven successful.

Scripture Club

To be a member of the scripture club, a student must memorize the mastery scriptures.

Levels of Achievement The following achievement levels are obtainable over the four years of seminary:

Doctorate of Scripture

There are many possible ways to recognize club members, such as a wall chart, bulletin board, dinner sponsored by ecclesiastical leaders, or a lunch-time ceremony at the seminary.

Memento Presentation

You could give each student some inexpensive reward that represents the work accomplished. You could use a pin, certificate, small book, iron-on decal, seminary letter (similar to a high school athletic letter) , or special recognition on the graduation program.

Individual Initiative

Week One

A student selects three of the scripture mastery passages to be memorized and passes off those scriptures to his or her zone leader. The zone leader writes the references, the student's name, and the zone name on a sheet of paper and gives the paper to you.

Week Two

A student who has already passed off three scriptures to the zone leader may add one scripture each week. The zone leader gets that student's sheet from you and records the additional reference.

You might begin a class period by asking which students would like to quote a scripture. Those who have passed off scriptures and who want to quote a

scripture raise their hands. Choose any scripture from a student's sheet to have the student quote. Mark the reference so you do not call for the same one each time.

The zone or student is awarded a certain number of points for correctly quoting the scripture passage. Allow one quotation per zone per day. Do not allow any one student to dominate.

Choral Recitation

Read a scripture over and over orally in class, having the students read with you. Encourage students to \ close their books when they feel they can repeat part of the scripture without looking. Let individual �embers quote the scripture to the class when they feel they have it memorized. _ _ __ _ _ ___ ____ -- -

Recite the scripture as a class, with class members each taking a tum giving one word at a time. Have classes compete to see which one can get through the verse the most times without a mistake.

Follow the preceding variation, but compete as zones/groups with each one taking a tum.

Use tests to stimulate students to memorize scriptures. Use their test scores as part of their grades \or as extra credit. Here are several examples of tests that can be used:

\ i . Have students write out the scripture from \ memory on a blank piece of paper. �. Have students recite the scripture orally to you or I to another class member.

3. Give students a copy of the verse with words I missing, and have them fill in the blanks.

4. Mix up the words in the verse, and have them I arrange the words in the correct order. 5 . Give them the first letter of each word and have : them complete it. �. Give an oral class exam. On the chalkboard write out the scripture to be memorized. Have the class repeat it several times. Erase two or three words at a time while the class continues to repeat the scripture after each erasing session. Continue the process until all the words are erased from the board and the class has the verse memorized.

Erase all but the first letter of each word, and have the students repeat the scripture until they have mastered it. Then erase all the letters from the board, and have the students repeat the verse.

Word Arrangement

After allowing time in or outside of class to memorize a scripture passage, give each zone/group an envelope containing small slips of paper with one or two words of the verse on each piece of paper. As a zone, students are to put the words of the scripture in correct order.

When each zone has finished, shuffle the papers, and put them back in the envelope. Redistribute the envelopes, and have one student at a time in each zone work on the verse with a time limit of ten to fifteen seconds. When the time expires, the students should rotate and have another person continue.

Paper Pass

Give students an allotted amount of time to memorize the mastery scripture. When the time is up, have the students close their books, and give each student a blank piece of paper. On your signal they should begin to write out the verse, including the reference. Every fifteen seconds have them rotate papers in an organized manner around the class. Each student is responsible to correct the paper received if necessary and then to continue writing the verse.

Continue the activity until all the papers are complete. After a predetermined amount of time, correct the papers. This could be a zone/group competition, or you could give each student an appropriate number of points for every correct paper in the class.

Chalkboard Play

Give the class a scripture to be memorized and about five minutes to study it. Then have each zone/group leader stand at the chalkboard with the zone lined up behind him or her. Each zone leader writes the first word of the scripture on the board and goes to the end of the line, the second person moves up and writes the second word, and so on until the scripture is written.

Situations

Example

Willy Wisdom's acquaintances continue to tempt him with alcohol and drugs. They do not understand how he can be so strong and resist their pressure. Willy's secret is that he knows the promises made to those who keep the Word of Wisdom. What are the promises? (See D&C 89: 18-2 1 . )

Timed Situations

Make up a test using ten to twenty situations, annotations, or scripture quotes for the scriptures learned. Tell the students they will be given a certain amount of time to complete the test. One minute for each situation is usually adequate. The students are to keep their books closed until you tell them to begin the test.

The object of this test is to determine the students' knowledge of the scriptures and to see whether or not they have marked the verses in their scriptures. They may use their books.

T rue and False

Write or give oral situations, phrases, or problems from the scriptures. Some statements will be true, and others will be false. Students must determine whether statements are true or false, and they must give a reference that verifies their answer.

If you, the teacher, desire, the students could cross out the incorrect statements on false answers and write in the correct answer.

Verse Quote

Make up a test by quoting the scriptures that have been learned. The student is to fill in the scripture reference. This test might be more effective if used toward the end of the school year.

You could allow the students to use their books or take the test from memory. For second-, third- , and fourth-year students, you may wish to include verses from previous years.
