MARKETS

Tag & LabelA pioneer in the UV Curable Rotary Screen Market,

Norcote has established international performance

on both high-speed flat and rotary screen web lines.

Norcote’s inks meet the stringent demands of the

Beverage Market, while still providing the required

characteristics for the Health & Beauty, Pharmaceuti-

cal and Petroleum Markets.

Decal / NameplateNorcote manufactures outstanding inks for the Prod-

uct Identification Market including nameplates,

markings, labels and decals. These are typically

printed first or second surface on various opaque and

transparent substrates including metals, polycarbon-

ates, Mylar® films, polyester films, PVC and pressure

sensitive vinyl. These products may be embossed or

stamped and are die-cut after printing. A pressure

sensitive adhesive may be applied to the reverse side

of the part.

Loose LeafNorcote was the first manufacturer to supply UV inks

to the Binder and Loose Leaf Markets. This market

focuses on the decoration of vinyl binders, book

cloth, covers, plastic packaging and sheet materials.

Selecting the right ink is dependent upon the

substrate and post-print finishing processes such as

heat-sealing and die-cutting.

Point Of PurchaseNorcote offers a full line of UV curable inks for Point

of Purchase, Banner and Decal decoration. Our inks

are formulated to achieve adhesion to a wide range

of materials with excellent weatherability and finish-

ing properties. Our four-color process inks have

exceptional printing properties allowing the printer

to product high quality graphics with consistent

color and limited dot gain.

ContainerNorcote container inks display smooth, bold prints

with superior character definition and opacity. These

inks meet or exceed industry performance standards.

Our container inks are intended for direct printing on

containers made of HDPE, PVC, PET (clear & colored),

polycarbonate, PETE, PETG and low density polyethyl-

ene tubes (soft-touch).

use on UV print receptive polyesters, ITO sputtered

coated films, and most other films commonly used in

the manufacture of flexible circuits. It is suitable for

use in a variety of applications including RFID, EL,

static shields and contact pads. Our dielectric inks are

easy to process and are compatible with most com-

monly used PET substrates.

Optical MediaThe Optical Media market provides decoration on

compact Discs (CD, CD-R, CD-RW & Digital Video Discs

(DVD). Printers typically print directly on the first

surface of Polycarbonate discs using high-speed

screen, flexographic and offset printing equipment.

The most common colors used are white, black and

four-color process halftone inks. Compatible tech-

nologies including digital and Rimage® give printers

more options.

Metallic Pastes & InksWhen printing inks containing paste, select mesh with openings large enough to transfer the metallic pigments of choice; generally a

or lower is required. Metallic prints can look different before and after printing due to leafing, overlapping of particles. When view-ing color be aware that the print will appear darker when viewed at an angle instead of viewing straight on. Pigmented inks in the same series may be added to modify the metallic color. Caution: Mix only enough ink for one day.

Fluorescents

The advantages of fluorescent (DayGlo®) colors are their brightness under many different conditions such as indoor lighting, low light conditions outdoors and limited visibility areas. A bright non-fluorescent color is able to reflect about 90 percent of a color present in the light spectrum. A fluorescent color can reflect as much as 200 percent. Norcote offers both liquid and powder fluorescents. These can be added up to 20-25% of the total weight of the ink you are working with.

All Series1 - 3%

Effects

Increases depth of cure and cure rate. Increases surface hardness and resis-tance to blocking.

CUR-073Consequences

Reduces intercoat adhesion (monitor) and slightly increases gloss, non-yellowing.

Cure / Adhesion Promoter

Series

All Series except PPC-7, DC & GN Blacks. Do not use on Polycarbonate..5 - 1%

Effects

Increases cure and adhesion, may restore intercoat on previous over cured prints. The inks will cross link more densely. Increases water resistance.

Consequences

Amine-NOT FOR POLYCARBON-ATE. Will increase viscosity. Can embrittle the ink. Pot life is 4 hours.

CUR-800

Low Viscosity Adhesion / Cure Promoter

Series

All Series not usedwith adhesives. 5 - 10% - Larger % can be used but monitor color.

Effects

Increases cure and adhesion. The ADC-250, ADC-4000 and ADC-10000 will also aid with the appearance of static (surface tension polarity) and ink reticulation. These are our most power-ful additives.

Consequences

(ADC7-250, ADC7-4000 & ADC7-10000)Immediate reaction with the ink. Do not use with any inks that require adhesive compat-ibility. Caution: These additives are VERY reactive to both fluorescent and incandescent light. They will react to the light within 10 - 15 minutes if not mixed into pigmented ink systems.

The Screen Is The Basis For Good Screen Printing!

Start by selecting the right mesh for the job.

Mesh Count

Number of threads per linear inch/centimeter

Thread Diameter

The circumference of the thread

Mesh Opening:

The spacing between adjacent threads

PW

Plain Weave - woven with one thread over, one thread under

TW

Twill Weave - woven with two threads over, two threads under

% Open Area

The percentage of open area refers to the relationship between the thread area and the actual opening between four woven threads in the mesh. The open mesh area helps determine the ability of an ink to pass through the mesh, as well as the thickness of the ink deposit in the printed image

Screen printers know that ultraviolet curing saves money. And more and more screen printers are discovering the benefits of American Ultraviolet Company's UV cure systems, including space, energy and ink savings, quadrupled throughput, greatly reduced cleanup, a healthier environment and healthier employees. American Ultraviolet Company has been manufacturing state-of-the-art UV curing equip-ment and light sources since 1960.

Mini Conveyor

A table-top system designed for production applications, the Mini Conveyor incorporates the same components as larger American Ultraviolet systems for maximum output. The Mini Conveyor cures all substrates up to six inches wide. The Mini Conveyorized UV Cure System provides intense ultraviolet energy for:Curing ultraviolet inks and coatings Photo activating UV-sensitive adhesives Production Color matching

3 Foot Conveyor

American Ultraviolet Company's "3-Foot" convey-orized curing system incorporates the latest technology in a compact conveyor. Now there is a unit available that takes up minimal shop space, making it ideal for laboratory samples, color matching and production applications.

The "3-Foot" Conveyor has a 300 watt/inch mercury lamp with tri-power switching and an optional 400 watt iron additive lamp. This variable-speed conveyor features digital feet-per-minute indicator, UV-resistant coated fiberglass conveyor belt, secondary ammeter and vacuum/exhaust hold-down.

Super Cool Conveyors

This state-of-the-art "Super Cool" conveyorized curing system incorporates the latest technology in air flow that maintains substrate temperatures at or below 98 degrees Fahrenheit.* All systems are elliptically focused and incorporate replaceable reflector liners in heat sink extrusion. Each lamp assembly utilizes

steel-bladed cooling fans and high-voltage key locked connectors. The exhaust/vacuum system, lamp evacua-tion airflow design and infrared filters insure low operating temperatures for heat-sensitive substrates. The variable-

speed conveyor includes digital feet-per-minute indicator, UV resistant coated fiberglass conveyor belt, solid-state speed control and adjustable legs. All conveyors are constructed with solid beds throughout their length to guarantee stability at any height.

''Super-Cool" curing systems are available in single-, double- and triple-lamp configurations. Each lamp is individually controlled and can operate at 300, 200 or 125 watts per inch. additive lamps operate at 400 and 300 watts per inch. *Based on ambient air temperature of 72°F, belt speed at 60 FPM and lamps at 200 WPI.

Retrofit Systems

Now one unit can do conventional as well as UV curing. Adding ultraviolet curing to your existing gas, electric or infrared dryer is easy with American Ultraviolet Company's irradiators, lamps and power supplies. Our custom-designed exhaust/vacuum system installs below the belt, and the curing system installs on top. The American Ultraviolet Curing Irradiator Retrofit Kit includes a labeled, digital, encased power supply; a focused, air-cooled lamp assembly; optical shielding; and an optional vacuum/exhaust hold-down with blower--everything you need to convert an existing dryer to air-cooled UV. Air-cooled conveyor-cure systems are designed for:

Curing UV inks, coatings and adhesives Retrofitting to existing conveyors and infrared ovens

Optima Conveyors

Everything you need and nothing you don’t.

That’s how we designed the Optima Conveyorized UV Curing line. The Optima series provides the optimal feature set for curing printed POP materials without the high-end features of American Ultraviolet’s standard and Super Cool UV Curing conveyors.

The result is a low cost UV curing conveyor with the proven reliability of an American Ultraviolet curing unit. Removing the “frills” gave us the chance to add some new features such as the quick-change lamp assembly and modular frame rails.

Profiling Radiometers

Using A UV Radiometer Can Save Time And Money!• Set-up time reduced

• Reduce cost of “sacrifice” work pieces

• Replace lamps and reflectors only when necessary

• Avoid costly downtime

• Avoid production of unsatisfactory products

To be able to produce quality product consistently is really the end goal in any process. By monitoring UV levels in a curing system, it is possible to produce quality product time after time and avoid the production of bad product due to improper curing. It is very difficult to measure the cost of producing bad product. Of course, the cost of the materials and labor is lost. In addition, the cost of bad product increases exponentially the closer it gets to the customer before it is discovered.
