South Lanarkshire War Memorials
As the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War
approaches in 2014, Scran’s war memorial collections will
become even more relevant. Material, contributed by the
Friends of Low Parks Museum, offers Scran users access to
images of memorials and war graves across South
Lanarkshire - from Cambuslang to Uddingston. The collection
also includes a number of memorials from neighbouring
regions, such as Wanlockhead in Dumfries and Galloway.
And watch out for new war memorial records from North
Lanarkshire coming soon.

Scran Out and About
As ever, it’s been a busy term for the Scran outreach team. We made our annual appearance at the Scottish Learning Festival in September, a great opportunity to meet some of our users face to face. We’ve also been delivering our comprehensive range of training programmes to teachers, librarians and students across schools, colleges and universities in Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire, East Dunbartonshire, East Lothian, Edinburgh, Falkirk, North Lanarkshire, Perth and Kinross, Renfrewshire, South Ayrshire and South Lanarkshire. Scran was also at the Dumfries and Galloway English Learning Conference, the Scottish Association of Geography Teachers Conference in Glasgow and at the Royal Scottish Geographical Society in Perth. In the adult learning sector, Scran has been out and about offering taster sessions across a number of Edinburgh libraries, talking to historical and family history societies in Fife and exhibiting at East Lothian’s Heritage Festival. If you are interested in organising a Scran CPD session or other learning event then please get in touch.

Wilhelmina Barns-Graham Artworks
Wilhelmina Barns-Graham CBE (1912-2004) was
born and educated in Scotland, but moved to
Cornwall where she became a member of the St.
Ives Society of Artists. Digital copies of both her
representational and abstract works have been
contributed to Scran by the Barns-Graham
Charitable Trust. The Trust has recently renovated
Balmungo House in Fife, a Victorian property
formerly owned by the artist, to provide a hub to
celebrate her work.

Baltersan Castle and Crossraguel Abbey
Baltersan Castle in South Ayrshire is a ruined,
Category A-Listed, 16th-century tower-house. At the
centre of one of the most important ancient
pilgrimage routes in Scotland - Glasgow Cathedral to
Whithorn via Paisley Abbey - Baltersan is also closely
linked with the nearby mediaeval Crossraguel Abbey.
Stunning images of both these ancient sites have
been kindly contributed by Scran user Charmaine
Gittens of Phototech Imaging.

Coming Soon...
Do you know what a gansey is?
Ganseys are patterned woollen
fishing jumpers from Northern
Scotland. Each gansey tells its
own story, with different
patterns, wool types and
symbolism making every one
unique.
Scran is delighted to announce
that we will soon be hosting the
digital resources of the National
Gansey Archive, collected and
curated by the Moray Firth
Partnership.

My Favourite Record
We asked Dalry Homework Club in North Ayrshire to
share their favourite Scran record with us. They’ve been
using images from the site recently to make
calendars.
One of the girls at the club said, “The leopard looks so
calm and full, it must have just eaten something else”.

Line Drawings of Scotland
This wonderful set of drawings
has been licensed to Scran by
architect and illustrator Iain
Watt. Originally created as a
series of Christmas cards over
the course of nearly 30 years,
they depict Iain's travels
around Scotland, often in his
boat, and feature landmarks
including Castle Stalker,
Colonsay and Iona.
