The Past is Exciting and Important Something that happened 100 years ago can seem as exciting and interesting as something that happened yesterday. By utilizing the museum’s archives, exhibits and artifacts scouts will be able to learn about how people and events not only shape ours past but our future as well. This program meets a majority of the requirements for Achievement 8. Dates: Jan. 21 & Apr. 15

Webelos Communicator Get a jump start on your Communicator Badge with this exciting class. Scouts will create a secret code; make invisible ink, experiment using nonverbal communication and much more. This class covers requirements 1, 4, 5, 13 & 16. Date: Nov. 26 & Jan. 28

Special Holiday Workshop During Christmas at Union Station, The Durham will offer a special holiday workshop. Scouts will have a guided tour covering the history of Christmas at Union Station, the Ethnic Trees, and the many different holiday traditions from around the world. They will even make a holiday craft to take home. Class runs 6-7:30PM. Tigers: Dec. 3, Wolves: Dec. 10 Bears & Webelos: Dec. 17

Workshop Registration Information for Cub Scouts Cub Scout workshops are available with advance registration, private classes maybe booked for Packs of 8 or more. The cost is $6 per Scout and $5 per adult, unless the adults are members of the museum or a UNMC employee. One leader and co-leader per troop admitted at no cost. Payment is required at the time of reservation. Additional adults and siblings may pay at the door. Cancellations must be made one full week in advance to receive a refund. CUB SCOUT WORKSHOPS *All regularly scheduled workshops run 6:00-7:30 pm, classes start promptly at 6:00, so please plan accordingly. Tigers Making My Family Special Join other scouts from around the council as we explore what make your family special. Scouts will play historical games, try their hand at some daily chores, tour the museum’s permanent exhibits, and take part in classroom discussions. This program meets the requirements for Achievement #1 and Elective # 14. Dates: Nov. 5, Jan. 7, Feb. 4, Mar. 11, Apr. 1 & May 6

Wolves American Indian Lore By utilizing the museum’s Native American exhibit and artifacts, scouts will learn about the daily lives of one of the local tribes. Hands-on artifacts, storytelling, and a themed craft will make this a workshop your pack will not forget. This program meets the requirements for Elective # 10. Dates: Nov. 12, Feb. 11 & Apr. 8

It’s a Secret Scouts will have blast learning what it takes to be a good spy. Invisible ink, secret codes and more will make this a class they won’t want to miss. This program meets the requirements for Elective # 1. Dates: Jan. 14, Mar. 18 & May 13

Bears American Indian Life Spend time learning about one of the Native American tribes that once called this area home. Scouts will learn about the construction of an Earth Lodge and Tipi, play Native American games, and more. This program meets the requirements for Elective #24. Dates: Nov. 19 & Mar. 25

Tall Tales The art of storytelling has been around for centuries. By using the permanent galleries, scouts will take a story-based tour of historic Omaha and surrounding communities. This program meets the requirements for Achievement #4. Dates: Feb. 18

BOY SCOUT MERIT BADGE WORKSHOPSAmerican Heritage The Durham Museum and the American Heritage badge go hand-in-hand. Join museum staff as you learn not only what makes our country great, but our community as well. Interactive activities, classroom discussions, and a tour through our galleries will keep this class fast paced and fun. Scouts are required to read the American Heritage Merit Badge booklet before taking the class. Dates: Nov. 16 & Jan. 11, 10:00-4:00

Citizenship of the Community A nation is a patchwork of communities that differ culturally from one another and may be governed differently as well. But regardless of how local communities differ, they all have one point in common: In the United States, local government means self-government. Good citizens help to make decisions about their community through their elected local officials. Scouts are required to read the Citizenship of the Community Merit Badge booklet before taking the class.

*This badge is required for Eagle Scout. Date: Mar. 15 10:00-4:00

Citizenship of the Nation As Scouts fulfill the requirements for this merit badge, they will learn how to become active citizens who are aware of and grateful for their liberties and rights. Upon completion, scouts will be more likely to participate in their governments, protect their freedoms, help defend their country, and stand up for individual rights on behalf of all of America’s citizens. Scouts are required to read the Citizenship of the Nation Merit Badge booklet before taking the class.

*This badge is required for Eagle Scout. Date: Feb 1 10:00-4:00

Coin Collecting Did you know that the Omaha Coin Club is one of the oldest established coin clubs in the Midwest? Join its member as they explore the history of some of the rarest coins in the world. In addition, scouts will learn all the details that go into preserving and grading coins. Join its members as you learn about preservation, grading, and the history of some of the rarest coins. Scouts will also tour the Bryon Reed Coin Collection, known as one of the top three coin collections in the United States. Dates: Nov. 9 & Apr. 5, 9:00-12:00

Collections Led by the museum’s Curator, Scouts will learn the best way to preserve their personal collections for years to come. Classroom room discussions as well as hands on demonstrations make this a class your Scout will not forget. Scouts are required to read the Collection Merit Badge booklet before taking the class. Dates: Dec. 7 10:00-12:00

Genealogy Exploring your roots - where your family name came from, why your family lives where it does, what your parents and grandparents did for fun when they were your age - can be fascinating. Discovering the history of your ancestors is what genealogy is all about. Scouts are required to read the Genealogy Merit Badge booklet before taking the class. Date: Jan. 25 10:00-12:00

Indian Lore The Durham Museum has an entire exhibit focusing on the culture and everyday life of the Native Americans who once called this area home. By utilizing the museum’s collection of hands on artifacts and displays, Scouts will be able to complete this badge in just one class. Dates: Nov. 9, Jan. 25, & Apr. 5, 1:00-4:00

Personal Management Get a jump start on your Personal Management badge, with Educators from the Federal Reserve Bank: Omaha Branch. Learn the best ways to invest for your future, the ins and outs of the stock market and more.

*This badge is required for Eagle Scout. Date: Feb. 22, 9:00-11:00AM

Textiles Scouts will learn about the importance of the different types of fabrics that we use in our everyday lives and their importance. Scouts are required to read the Textile Merit Badge booklet before taking the class. Date: Dec. 14, 10:00-12:00 & Mar. 22 1:00-3:00
