March

Scottish Local History Week is co-ordinated annually by LOCSCOT, a sub-group of the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals Local Studies Group. It is organised as a national event to provide an opportunity for Library authorities to raise the profile of their Local Studies and related collections by organising events, exhibitions and other activities to highlight aspects of the local history of their area, working with colleagues, partner organisations, community groups and schools in their own area on a wide range of projects. Most, but not all, events are related to an annual theme set by LOCSCOT and most happen during or around Scottish Local History Week. The theme of Scottish Local History Week 2013 is “Superstition.” The purpose of the week is to highlight the resources which are held in Local History collections across Scotland, giving a fascinating insight into the superstitions, the folklore, myths and legends which exist in different parts of the country and some of the tales of witchcraft and the supernatural. This list gives a flavour of some of the events which are taking place in all corners of Scotland. As the events vary, showing how imaginative and innovative our Local History colleagues are

ABERDEEN

The Haunted North: Aberdeen's true Ghost Stories

A talk by author Graeme Milne on Wednesday 6th March 2013 from 6.00 pm – 7.00 pm in the Central Library, Rosemount Viaduct, Aberdeen. AB25 1GW.

The talk will illustrate why he considers Aberdeen to be one of the most haunted cities in Scotland. The area has had a long and sometimes bloody history which many consider a requisite for alleged paranormal activity. However, Graeme thinks that people will be surprised to hear that 'ghosts' can appear in the most unlikely of locations. During his six years of research he has amassed numerous eye witness accounts and he will discuss these as well as his own personal experiences during the event. From Aberdeen's most iconic buildings to bland municipal housing each has a story to tell. Graeme has written two books of paranormal tales from Aberdeen and the North East, “The haunted North” and “The haunted North Two” Free, but booking is essential on 01224 652512

Display of creating writing with a supernatural twist, inspired by historic news articles during March in the Central Library, Rosemount Viaduct, Aberdeen. AB25 1GW Free, usual Library opening hours
