The attachment this week is an important one it is from BEIC/NFU which is long overdue to get everyone to write, email or fill in the statutory letter and send it to DEFRA to protest at any possibility that they will steam roller through a ban on beak trimming, to counter act the lobbying from the people who do not know what they are talking about, as lobbyists can have the law changed through misrepresentation in the media which affects public opinion which governments listen to.As an industry we are not yet ready to cope with beak trimming without a bloodbath, In days of old when our hens were Road Island Red/Light Sussex crosses, they were big laid back and very little problems but weren’t so good at laying eggs, our modern layers are much lighter a lot more energetic lay a lot more

  • eggs but more aggressive to one another as they have been selected for their egg laying ability and it will take at least 6 to 10 years to try to breed out the aggression, if it is at all possible. For if this legislation progresses it will potentially double the cost of production especially Free Range.Scotland does not have to follow England with this proposed legislation, we like to think that our ministers and government have more sense and actually listen to advice and science, but we advise everyone to write or email to Richard Lockhead just in case.

UK: 'Best before' date extended for eggs

The best-before date for British Lion eggs is set to revert to the EU standard of 28 days from lay, effective from 1 June 2014, the British Egg Industry Council (BEIC) has announced.

The decision is a mark of the progress made by the industry in effectively eliminating salmonella from British Lion eggs, said a statement, which added that the date will still be stamped on eggs, rather than just on-pack as required by legislation.

When the original British Lion Code of Practice was introduced in 1998, the best-before date was set at 27 days – ahead of the legal maximum as an additional food safety precaution.

But following the introduction of salmonella vaccination, the risk of salmonella has reduced drasti-cally and there is now felt to be no benefit in a shorter date.

BEIC says the extra day's life will help consumers avoid potential wastage, while the Food Standards Agency already advises that eggs can be eaten after the best-before date, as long as they are cooked thoroughly.

"Although the shorter best-before date was an important part of the original Code of Practice, the safety of Lion eggs today means that there is no need to reduce life from the EU maximum, although date-stamping the eggs themselves remains an important differentiator," said BEIC chairman Andrew Joret.

    Colourful egg boxes as toys

Egg box manufacturer Twin-Pack and Denegaard Foods has launched a new type of egg box at VIV Europe – one that can also serve a purpose as a toy after the egg use.

The 'EggyPlay' concept allows the boxes to be reused, all that is necessary is a little washing after use, at about 65° Celsius.

The boxes are child-friendly and are made in environmentally friendly moulded plastic. The boxes

  • Ukraine and EU agree on poultry export quotasUkraine will be able to export more poultry to the European Union (EU) than the country’s experts earlier estimated, according to the report of the Union of Poultry Breeders of Ukraine.

The officials of the EU and Ukrainian authorities agreed export quotas for 2014 to the amount of 16,000 tonnes of chilled and 20,000 tonnes of frozen poultry. Previously experts estimated that Ukraine will be granted with the right to supply only about 20,000 tonnes of poultry meat in total.

"In May, the first deliveries should go to Netherlands," a representative of the country's poultry producers stated.

The chairman of the Union of Poultry Breeders of Ukraine, Alexander Bakumenko, estimates that due to the rise of exports until November, poultry farmers can earn an additional €5.6 million. "Theoretically, in future we can sell up to 170,000 tonnes per year," he added.

From April 23 onwards, the decision of the European Parliament came into force, which unilaterally nul-lifies the tariff rates for Ukraine goods. The decision is valid until November 1. According to European Commission, Ukraine will be able to save €500 mln on fees, including €400 mln in the agriculture sector.
