INTRODUCTION

SCOTTISH ARCHAEOLOGY MONTH

It’s that time of year again. As the summer draws to a close, and we prepareourselves for the dark nights ahead, at least we have Scottish ArchaeologyMonth (SAM) to enjoy and the continuation into Highland ArchaeologyFortnight means that there are six weeks of free and exciting archaeologicalevents on offer. SAM makes me think about how fortunate we are to live in (orvisit) Scotland with its wealth of archaeological sites and the opportunity thatEuropean Heritage Days allows for us to explore our heritage through ScottishArchaeology Month and Doors Open Days. Of course, this would not bepossible without the involvement of local volunteers who devise, lead andpromote local walks, talks and visits and the participation of public and privatesector as well in support of these events. Our thanks to all as ever.

Archaeology Scotland’s (note the new name!) involvement in the co-ordinationof SAM is made possible through a grant from Historic Scotland. As one of theleading national archaeological charities in Scotland, what we lack in terms ofhaving our own historic sites to visit, we make up for by initiatives such as SAM,our annual Summer School, the Scottish Archaeology Fair, our conferencesand projects such as Adopt a Monument. If you are not already a member, there is information on how to join in this guide. If you are a member, thank youfor your support. I hope this guide inspires you to find out more about ScottishArchaeology and that you enjoy this year’s SAM.

EUROPEAN HERITAGE DAYS

From August to November, the 49 countries signatory to the European CulturalConvention will be celebrating the European Heritage Days (EHD), a jointinitiative of the Council of Europe and the European Commission. Once a yearfor the past 16 years, the EHD have provided an opportunity to celebrate theunity and diversity of a shared cultural heritage which is Europe’s mostdistinctive feature. The annual programme offers opportunities to visitbuildings, monuments and sites, many of which are not normally accessible tothe public. It aims to widen access and foster care for architectural andenvironmental heritage.

Scottish Archaeology Month, along with Doors Open Days, formScotland’s contribution to EHD, bringing over 100,000 visitors to thenation’s rich archaeological and architectural heritage with support fromHistoric Scotland.

An guided walk (2 miles, 1.5 hours)that follows the line of Leith’s 16thcentury defences. The defences were slighted soon afterwards but muchsurvived into the 18th century and their line can still be traced today. Thewalk will follow the line of the defences and explore recent archaeologicalevidence for the defences and their impact on the development of Leith.
