`Dearest Gallerists, Dearest Creatives, Dearest Visitors,
I’m delighted to announce SCOPE‘s 6th edition in Basel. The establishment of art fairs such as SCOPE accompanying Art Basel in the last couple of years, has met with great success and profit for the city of Basel. Vice-versa, I’m convinced that as the cultural capital of Switzerland with its world famous museums and constructions of international renowned architects, the city of Basel is granting these fairs a most worthy setting.
I wish you a stimulating stay in Basel and hope, that you’ll find the time to get to know our appealing city. I wish SCOPE all the best for the future and tremendous success.

centerThe CENTER supports indi-vidual, emerging artists and curators, in a wide variety of mediums, including Film, Video Installation, Performance and Sound. Focusing on specific projects and fundraising in order to bring them to fruition, artists and curators work closely with The CENTER to create new, often site-specific, works and interactive projects. The CENTER also pays homage to art education by administrating the ground-breaking Vanguard Program, which activates Artist Mentorships, Collector Mentorships and Personal Development Auctions.
For each edition of SCOPE Art Show, The SCOPE Foundation honors emerging artists, galler-ies and independent curators of extraordinary promise, by presenting awards that bolster creative exposure and professional profile. Previous recipients of the SCOPE Foundation AWARD have built thriving careers, projects and businesses that enjoy critical accolades within various sectors of the arts.
Always striving to support advancement in the arts, The SCOPE Foundation presents UNION; an offshoot that strategically partners with like-minded not-for-profits, institutions and initiatives to realize even greater goals. We are also pleased to offer opportunities, gifts and dona-tions to organizations with out-standing direction and impact in the contemporary cultural landscape.

Satch Hoyt’s installation Say it Loud: Recreating the Canon is comprised of dozens of art books, both found and donated from around the world. A critique on the contemporary art world, which by its very definition is ever-evolving, Say it Loud is a work of posterity to commemorate those who are not yet enshrined in the annals of art history. An accomplished musician/composer before embarking on a career in the visual arts, Satch Hoyt has collaborated with the likes of Stomu Yamashta, Grace Jones, Louise Bourgeois and Ramuntcho Matta. Drawing deeply on that background, the artist has made musicality and aurality a base chord of his visual practice. A reflection on the African Diaspora and its multifold consequences, Hoyt’s work addresses the Black Experience, while tapping into a spirit of fantasy, refuge, and transcendence.

The third installment in his site-specific series created exclusively for SCOPE Art Shows, Robert Montgomery debuts his Recycled Sunlight Poem,“Rather Burned Than Captured”. An elegy to freedom and escape, this piece was custom-created for the glass entrance of SCOPE Basel. Working in a post-situationist tradition, Montgomery’s poetic installations mimic the commercial signs that populate urban skylines, and use natural sunlight to power his solar LED lights.
Robert Montgomery was included in the Orientale* show at last year’s Venice Biennale. He has a 1st Class honours degree in painting and an MFA from Edinburgh College of Art. While still a student, in 1994, he initiated the Aerial Project, a landmark exhibition opening the streets of Edinburgh to contemporary artists. From 1995 to 1997 he was an Artist-in-Residence at the Museum of Fine Arts Houston, and his work is in the museum’s permanent collection. He has exhibited at Transmission Gallery, Glasgow, The Contemporary Arts Museum, Houston, The Embassy and the Talbot Rice Gallery in Edinburgh, The Margaret Thatcher Project in New York, the BALTIC in Newcastle, Nuke Gallery in Paris, Galerie Analix Forever in Geneva and in London at Trolley Gallery, Sketch, Dazed & Confused Gallery, FMCG, 20 Hoxton Square Projects and KK Outlet.

The BERLIN LOUNGE is the hub of the ART FROM BERLIN presentation of Berlin galleries at SCOPE Basel Art Show 2012 and provides an insight into Berlin as an art metropolis.
With 400 galleries and over 6,000 artists represented by Berlin galleries, the capital city has a strong attraction for international art lovers. This year’s spring Gallery Weekend coincided with the Berlin Biennale #7 and in some gallery districts the pedestrian traffic was so packed that intersections required traffic control: international visitors were suitably impressed at the current state of contemporary art production in Berlin.
ART FROM BERLIN is a platform at national and international art markets for Berlin galleries, organised by the Galleries Association of Berlin (LVBG) with support from the state of Berlin and the European Union. ART FROM BERLIN is a collective exhibition with galleries highlighting the Berlin profile: contemporary art that reflects the city’s innovative and international approach.
For this year’s ART FROM BERLIN presentation in Basel, a professional jury selected the final participating galleries from a citywide call for tenders. The jury comprised: Dr. Ralf Burmeister (Berlinische Galerie – Museum of Modern Art, Photography and Architecture), Christiane Meixner (Art Critic, Der Tagesspiegel), Georg Nothelfer (LVBG Chairman and Gallerist) and Brigitte Werneburg (Editor, Interview Magazine Germany).
In the BERLIN LOUNGE we are thrilled to present Europe’s biggest collection of galleries from Berlin. Come visit us and pick up further information including easy-to-read maps for an overview of Berlin as an art metropolis with its countless galleries, museums and institutions – your ticket to Berlin Art Week which runs from September 11 to 16, 2012.
