What is CALL?

How do you define CALL?

Page 6: Scope and limitations of CALL in Indonesia

Theoretically…

Levy M. (1997)“the search for and study of applications of the

computer in language teaching and learning” Davies, G. (2005)

(narrowly) “an approach to language teaching and learning in which the computer is used as an aid to the presentation, reinforcement and assessment of material to be learned, usually including a substantial interactive element.”

Page 7: Scope and limitations of CALL in Indonesia

The problem is…

Healey (GloCALL 2007): There is no ‘fixed’ theory in CALL There are only common practices in certain

contexts Why?

Computer technology is changing so fast ! But…

Research possibilities are so vast! Different softwares, websites, learners, cultures, you

name it! Revolution and evolution in teaching

creative!

Page 8: Scope and limitations of CALL in Indonesia

Should you follow the technological advances?

Yes, you may. If… … it’s pedagogically useful … it’s applicable technically and

financially

Who said so? … some older computer technology is

still pedagogically useful … it’s within your reach

How did you use computer technology in your class?

Experiencing ICT in Indonesia

Government Efforts Development and Implementation of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) in Indonesia (2001-2005) (Yuhetty, 2002)

Development of collaboration between ICT industry and ICT educational institutions through training and R & D , and network building for skills and capacity development

Develop and implement Curricula of ICT Use ICTs as an essential part of the curricula

and learning tools in schools/universities and training centers

Facilitate the use of internet for more efficient teaching and learning

Page 12: Scope and limitations of CALL in Indonesia

Harina Yuhetty (2004) & Herawati (2006) Patterns of Internet use for learning

The school designated a teacher to search and find information from the internet as needed by the subject teachers

Teachers with computer (internet) literacy should search and find by themselves any information that is necessary through internet kiosks or internet in school.

Teachers identify any necessary sites needed by students on each topics of certain subject, and then assign students to study the information at home (through internet).

Students based on their initiatives search and find information through internet.

Students’ advanced use: information, functional, creation, communication purposes

Page 13: Scope and limitations of CALL in Indonesia

Constraints of ICT in Indonesia

Constraints: Slow adoption of ICT culture (decision makers,

teachers, students) for learning purposes No integration of ICT into school curricula Facility and connectivity

Not enough and unequal distribution of ICT facilities

Lack of sufficient bandwidth and limited access to ICT facilities

Lack of Funding (expensive internet connections) Lack of local on line learning materials Lack of ICT Human resources in terms of quantity

and quality Language constraints
