Upcoming PTA Meeting Wednesday, March 20th
7:30 p.m.
School Scoops February/March 2013
From the President: As I write this we are approaching the 100th day of school. This means we are more than half way through the school year! Hard to believe!
Our Spaghetti dinner held on January 10th was a huge success! It brought in nearly $4,000 … WOW! Thank you to all who attended. Your dollars will help pay for the cultural arts program brought in by the PTA. Of course, a big thank you to the 5th grade committee (Terri Pallas, Tricia Lee, Lisa Senatore, Gwen McHugh) who did an enormous job of decorating, organizing, raffling, and feeding over 400 people who attended the dinner. Fantastic job! And thank you to the fifth grade students who did a great job in waiting on their customers and helping to clean up after the dinner. Each of you were wonderful and we are proud to have such courteous students. Our family fun night – A Pirate and Princess Party – was well attended and talked about in school by the kids the entire following week. The children enjoyed making pirate hats and hooks, princess wands and crowns, and were entertained by a pirate who gave them some training during his “Pirate School” show. Thank you to Jennifer Cooke for organizing the event! Parents as Reading Partners (PARP) kicked off at the end of the month with the theme: “Unplug and Get Connected”. The kids were all excited to read each day for at least 15 minutes, hand in their reading logs, and decorate part of the cord on the bottom of their sheet and see it added to the lobby bulletin board. They are reading more and hoping to win the Wii Party! Competition is fierce, but a good thing when it comes to reading more. Thank you so much to the PARP committee (Allyson Vail, Tonya Simpson, Mrs. D. Morris, Mrs. Peragine, Mrs. DiPreta and Mrs. Shannon). You have inspired the children to read more and that is a great thing! We also had a few cultural arts programs come in during January. The Power of One, an anti-bullying
program, Books Alive! (to kick off PARP), The Singing Bus Driver, and the Hip Pickles. Be sure to ask your kids about these performances. Each of them is an educational program, and they are a lot of fun too! Thank you to Vicky Katz and Michelle Rorke, who are our PTA cultural arts chair people, and research and hire the many programs that are brought in by the PTA.
February is a quiet month, but the kids look forward to the gym nights scheduled for the 2nd through 5th grade classes. The PTA nominations committee will be looking for volunteers for the executive board and standing
committees. All of the positions are open each year, but most people serve in their position for 2 years as a courtesy. However, if anyone is interested in a position for next year, then please fill out a nomination form and send it in an envelope that is addressed to the JFK PTA nominations committee. I look forward to seeing everyone at our next PTA meeting. Sincerely, Nancy Kenney

Can-Can Days at JFK
Tuesday, March 12th
Once a month, JFK families send in one or more non- perishable food items (no glass please) that are donated to one of our local food pantries. There are many hungry families in our community and a monthly food donation makes a big difference in these peoples’ lives. Students can place their donations in the shopping cart in JFK’s main lobby.
