Agenda
• Talking about the cool new features and improvements arriving with SCOM 2016
• Showing demo’s of some of the features
Roads? Where we’re going we don't need roads!
Design, Install, Upgrade
• Installs on Windows Server 2012 R2 and Windows
Server 2016
• Requires SQL 2012 SP2 or SQL 2014
• You no longer need to specify the SQL collation
SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS during installation
• In-place upgrade from SCOM 2012 R2 using the
same methods as upgrading 2012->2012R2
Design, Install, Upgrade
• No support for monitoringlegacy Windows Server 2003
(which does not sayit will not work)
• Added support for Windows 2016 and Windows 10
regular agents, and Nano Server agents
Scheduled Maintenance Mode
“I’m gonna read your thoughts”
Jumping 30 years in time
1955 – 1985 - 2015
• Wizard driven interface
• Multiple schedules possible
• Currently located in the
SCOM Admin pane
–Make yourself heard to
change this!
MP updates and Recommendations
• SCOM can now check what management packs you are missing based on your monitored server workloads!
• Uses a custom management pack with simple discoveries to
check for missing packs and packs which need updating.
• Install single or multiple advised packs (including multipart
packs) and download the guide - directly from one place.
• In TP5 a number of workloads have been added to the list
Data driven Alert Tuning
SCOM Admins can use this as a primary view to start tuning alerts, based on data from the environment
Starting version TP5
Data driven Alert Tuning
Which MP’s create the
most alerts?
Which Monitors/Rules?
Which Sources?
Override!
Extensible Network Monitoring
Making it easier to add custom network monitoring to SCOM!
Implementation in several steps in future updates
First step: Place custom SNMP OID’s in a formatted XML file and run an executable which will convert it as a monitoring pack into SCOM
Extensible Network Monitoring
Next step: Create a console interface to add custom OID’s to add to monitoring and let it handle the conversion and import into SCOM.
Improvements UNIX/Linux monitoring
• OMI agent sharing between OpsMgr, ConfigMgr & DSC
• Multi-threaded shell command/script executions
• File system discovery can be filtered by type or name using overrides.
• Target a single computer or group of computers with the new Shell
Command Templates and a new agent task option.
Improvements UNIX/Linux monitoring
Run any script to get health or performance (shell, python,
perl, etc.).
– So no longer single line command.
– Also no need to escape characters inside the scripts.
This is a big thing!
Improvements UNIX/Linux monitoring
Real scale improvements for cross-plat monitoring
(was max 500 per MS)
How?
Replacing the WSMAN Sync API
with
Async MI API
= Windows Management Infrastructure using CIM Standards which are
part of the new OMI agent
Nano Agent Support
• First agent release was in TP4
• Script based installation
• Separate Agent
• As of TP5 also push-based installation
• Also new in TP5: • ACS forwarding for security events.
• IIS and DNS role packs.
Nano Agent Support
Current Limitations:
• No VB of JS script based monitoring
• Must be in same domain as SCOM
• MSI installer not available
• No .Net and Process monitoring
• No Application Log
• No URL, OLEDB, ICMP
• No AD integration for agent
• No easy updates for agent in Windows Update
Preferred Partner Program
Making it possible to get preferred partner management packs from the SCOM Admin pane.
• Basic certification process
• Free management packs
• Silect, Comtrade
• Veeam, Nice, SquaredUp
• More coming
Console UI response improvement
88 MpH
• Removing Sluggishness
• TP5 -> Alert Views
• Future -> State, Diagram, Performance
• Basically make better use of the cache, so performance increase also on slower databases
• Looking at improvements in the SDK layer
Management Packs!
• Updates and improvements to existing management packs, i.e. Office 365, Azure, Windows 2016 + role&features, Exchange, SQL…
• LAMP Stack and Linux apps monitoring:• Apache HTTP Servers v2.2 +
• MySQL v5-5.7 & MariaDB V5.5 & 10
• MongoDB & PostGre SQL still in planning
• Fabric and Storage monitoring not based off VMM
