Carmel O’Riordan - RIPMany years ago I met a human dynamo! As an active member
of the Saggart and Rathcoole Community Council, this lady wasalways busy, always doing. She came into her own when theCommunity Centre was built and funds were needed to run thecentre. She suggested a dog show be held, not any dog show butThe National Championships. Nod your head, stand back, say YesCarmel! To my memory show rings appeared and hundreds of dogshit Rathcoole!
A whole new experience for many people, without a problem forCarmel or so it seemed for the rest of us. She gave us the date andwe stood back and watched in utter amazement as it came abouteach year. Carmel managed to do all this whilst at the same timeraising a large family of 9 children who we know will miss her dearly.
- Jack O’Brien
The Community Council is fully aware of the huge part Carmel playedin establishing the Community Centre and offer their sympathies toher family.

A Chairde,
Forty years ago on 1 July 1975, Scoil Chrónáinopened its doors to its first students, 59 children inInfant and First Classes. There were three teachers,of whom I had the honour to be Principal. Now, theschool is a thriving entity, still located on the originalsite in the heart of the village, but with muchimproved facilities.
I would like to hold a reunion of the past parents, andpast pupils in the Citywest Hotel, Saggart, on 20th
June 2015 at 8pm. It would be wonderful to meet again the people whoremember the prefabs, the mud, the toilets (!), the rodents, the adventures, thefun. There will be plenty of stories to exchange. Please come, and pleasepass on the information to anyone who might enjoy the evening.
All are welcome, past and present. It is an evening to celebrate experienceswe shared.
Contact: Brenda Mac Ginneá, 0872999616, [email protected]
Please email, text or call me to indicate your intention to participate inthis event. I will need to give Citywest Hotel an idea of how many gueststo expect on the night.
Daichead bliain ó shoin ar an 1 Iúil 1975, d’oscail Scoil Chrónáin a doirsedon chéad ghrúpa leanbh – 59 páiste, i ranganna Naíonán agus Rang 1. Triúrmúinteoirí. Anois, is scoil mhór, rathúil í, a fhás agus a fhorbair i gcaitheamhna mblian.
Mar chéad phríomhoide ar an scoil, ba mhaith liom teacht le chéiled’iarscoláirí agus d’iarthuismitheoirí na scoile a ghairm le chéile in ÓstánCitywest, Saggart ar an 20 Meitheamh ag a 8pm. Beidh bia, deoch, ceol aguscraic againn. Inseoimid sean-scéalta agus cloisfimid nua-scéalta. Cuirfimidaithne arís ar a chéile.
Fáilte roimh gach aon duine a bhí nó a tá bainteach le Scoil Chrónáin.

A Rathcoole Memory from John Dowling
One Sunday morning my cousin John told me that his mother, NorahDowling, who ran the local Post Office in the mid 1950s in the frontroom of her house, next door to The Rathcoole Inn was getting himselfand his brother Anthony ready for 8.00 o’clock mass in Saggart, theparish church. At that time there was no Catholic church in Rathcooleand a bus service operated to take people to Saggart for mass. While Norah was getting herself ready there was a knock on the frontdoor and she asked John to answer it. He found a dark, handsome,foreign-type well dressed man with sallow skin at the door who asked touse the telephone in the Post Office. He also noticed a large green andsilver car, the likes of which he had never seen before, parked outsidewith a woman in the passenger seat. He found out later that it was a LaGonda. His mother instructed John to send the man to the local‘Barracks’ (Police Station) because she was in a rush to get to mass ontime.John informed the man and a short time afterwards the switch-boardbuzzed in the post office requesting a line to make a call, the barrackswas line 2 and the post office line 1.“That’ll be the man who was here” said Norah and instructed John toplug in the line so he could make his call. This connected him to theGPO in Dublin so he could make an international call.
The next day the local Garda called to the Post Office and enquired ifNorah knew who the stranger was who was anxious to make a telephonecall at such an early hour on a Sunday morning? She did not and wheninformed by Garda Braden that HE was The Aga Kahn she uttered thewords ‘Jesus Christ’. Also he gave the Garda a five pound note for allhis trouble. The woman in the car with the man was Rita Hayworth, themovie star, and he told her that they were on the way to The Curragh tosee his horses.
