POLISH ACADEMY OF SCIENCES POZNAŃ BRANCH

HISTORY

The Poznań Branch of the Polish Academy of Sciences was established in 1972 and its activity covers two regions: the Wielkopolska and Lubuskie Province. It was the third Branch formed after those in Kraków and Wrocław. The establishment of the Poznań Branch was initiated by Professors Gerard Labuda and Maciej Wiewiórowski. The first President of the Poznań Branch was Professor Labuda.

Presidium of the Polish Academy of Sciences – Poznań BranchTerm 2019-2022

ACTIVITIES

The President of the Branch is a member of the Presidium of the Polish Academy of Sciences and also represents directors of scientific units of the Academy func-tioning in the region of the Branch before local authorities and government bodies and in regional scientific and academic committees, especially in the College of Rectors of the City of Poznań. The Poznań Branch of the Academy provides a platform of scientific cooperationfor over 600 scientists from universities and scientific insti-tutes who work in 22 Scientific Committees formed by the Presidium of the Branch and established by means of election. Many conferences organized by the Scientific Committees are held under the auspices of the Branch. Since 2009, the Poznań Branch of the Academy has been an organizer of the Brain Awareness Week in Poznań as

part of which there are popular science lectures presenting the newest findings of research on brain given by eminent specia-lists in neurosciences, medicine, genetics, biochemistry, psycho-logy, cognitive science and computer science. For 21 years, the Branch has been also co-organizing another annual popular scien-ce event: Poznański Festiwal Nauki i Sztuki [Poznań Science and Art Festival]. In summer months in Jurata, under the auspices of the Branch weekly lectures titled Nauka na Wakacjach [Science on Vacation] are held. The other form of activities of the Branch are annual sessions from the series Dwugłos Nauki [Dialogue of Science] which address issues of fundamental importance and try to present views of prominent representatives of science and natural sciences, as well as philosophy and theology.

Konkurs Oddziału Polskiej Akademii Nauk w Poznaniu na najlepszą oryginalną pracę twórczą, której wiodącym autorem jest doktorant, ma na celu popularyzację osiągnięć badawczych młodych adeptów nauki oraz podkreślenie roli Polskiej Akademii Nauk w promocji nauki oraz jej szczególnej obecności w regionie Wielkopolski i Ziemi Lubuskiej. Nagrody są przyznawane raz w roku za oryginalne osiągnięcie badawcze, które zostało opublikowane w roku poprzedzającym przyznanie.

Every year, the Poznań Branch organizes a competition for the best original study published in the previous year whose the main author is a PhD student (under 30 years old) from Wielkopolska or Ziemia Lubuska. The competition is held in five fields corresponding to divisions of the Academy. The laureates receive awards and certificates and present their achievements in a short lecture during an open part of the spring session of the General Assembly of the Poznań Branch of the Academy.Moreover, recently a new initiative – open lectures “Science and Society” has been undertaken.
