JOB DESCRIPTION

JOB TITLE: Science Technician Apprentice - Level 3 Laboratory Technician

SALARY: Apprentice

HOURS OF WORK: 35 hours per week

39 weeks per year (term time plus PD days plus 5 days)

DISCLOSURE LEVEL: Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Services Check (DBS) RESPONSIBLE TO: Senior Science Technician

VISION AND PURPOSE:

To support the senior science technician with the efficient operation of all technical matters within the science department. To prepare, organise and maintain materials and equipment as directed by the senior science technician, ensuring students receive well-resourced and prepared lessons. Additional information:

This role incorporates study and completion of the Level 3 Laboratory Technician apprenticeship whilst working during the two year fixed term placement.

Applications from those with non-customer service degrees or qualifications will be considered.

Level 1

Teaching and learning

Prepare resources, materials and equipment for lessons as directed.

Assist in delivering practical learning activities for pupils.

Tidy up and clean workshops/classrooms or other relevant work areas.

Undertake first aid duties.

Equipment maintenance

Clean and undertake basic day to day maintenance of equipment as needed and directed to ensure it is clean and in good working order.

Resources May maintain sufficient supplies of materials to enable delivery of lessons. Safely and securely store allocated equipment and materials to prevent unauthorised access or misuse.

May handle small amounts of money for supplies.

Systems, policies and procedures

Perform duties in line with health and safety regulations and take action when hazards are identified, including reporting any serious hazards to the line manager. Ensure the safe treatment and disposal of used materials, including hazardous substances and respond to actual or potential hazards.

Personal and welfare support

May assist students with dressing, hygiene and eating whilst encouraging independence. Supporting students’ emotional and social well-being, reporting any problems to the teacher.

Systems, policies and procedures

Contribute to maintaining a safe environment. Responsible for the careful and safe use of equipment.

Team involvement

May demonstrate own duties to new or less experienced staff.

Building professional relationships

Communicates with pupils to support learning. Exchanges information with staff and suppliers.

Record keeping and information management

Undertake basic record keeping as directed.

Problem solving and decision making

Identify straight forward solutions to simple problems and minimal personal initiative required.

Knowledge, skills and experience

Practical knowledge required for setting up equipment related to area of work. Knowledge and compliance with policies and procedures relevant to health and safety and child protection. First aid at work may be a requirement or paediatric first aid.

Physical demands and working conditions

Regularly lifts and moves, pushes and pulls resources, materials and equipment which may be awkward or heavy. May be regularly exposed to dirt, fumes, chemicals, liquids, possible hazardous materials.

General To contribute to the overall ethos, work and aims of the academy.

Actively participate in performance management.

Identify personal training needs and other learning activities as required.

Develop an understanding of policies and procedures, complying with their contents and

raising concerns in a timely manner.

The post holder may be required to undertake other duties that are commensurate to the post holder’s abilities, position and grade.

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES

To undertake such other duties appropriate to the grade of the post as the principal may from time

to time reasonably determine.

The post holder must at all times carry out his/her responsibilities with due regard to the academy's

policy, organisation and arrangements for health and safety at work.

To ensure that the federation of Ormiston Academies is always presented positively within and

beyond the academy.

CONTEXT

All staff are part of a whole academy team. Each individual is required to support the values and ethos of the

academy and academy priorities as defined in the Academy Improvement Plan. This will mean focusing on

the needs of colleagues, parents and students and being flexible in a demanding environment.

Due to the nature of this job, it will be necessary for the appropriate level of Criminal Record Disclosure to

be undertaken. It is essential you disclose whether you have any pending charges, convictions, bind-overs

or cautions and if so, for which offences. This post will be exempt from the provisions of Section 4, (2), of

the Rehabilitation of Offenders 1974 (exemptions) (Amendments) Order 1986. Therefore, you are not

entitled to withhold information about convictions which for other purposes are “spent” under the

provisions of the Act. Any failure to disclose such convictions will result in dismissal or disciplinary action

by the academy.

This job description forms part of the contract of employment of the person appointed to the post. It reflects the position at the present time only and may be reviewed in negotiation with the employee in the future.
