Word from the deanLeiden Science has a four centuries-old tradition in cutting edge education and research. The current reserach and education programs of the faculty span the entire spectrum of science ranging from Mathematics and Statistical science, Computer science and Data science, Astrophysics, Physics, Chemistry and Pharmaceutical science to Biology and Environmental sciences.

We are committed to provide meaningful, rigorous and quality graduate experiences in a personalized environment with a cutting edge research infrastructure and internationally renowned supervisors.

Our faculty members are driven by a fascination with the unknown and an urge to enlarge our fundamental knowledge but at the same time they want to contribute to solutions for the big societal challenges of tomorrow. Scientific research is conducted in a worldwide context and our scientists are very well connected to international research networks. On a more local scale we collaborate in interdisciplinary teams with partners from for example the Leiden University Medical Centre and Delft University of Technology as well as partners from industry and governmental agencies.

Our location, in the middle of one of Europe’s most successful Bioscience Parks, enables close collaboration with life science companies. Students can expand their intellectual horizons while deepening their expertise in an array of disciplines.

Study in a research environment At the Leiden Graduate School of Science we challenge you to achieve new heights of intellectual engagement, while providing you at the same time with the support, tools and resources to aid in your success. Our philosophy is that students study in a research environment. Our MSc students are taken up as members of our research institutes thus providing an ideal environment for our philosophy that you can best learn science by doing science together with fellow junior and senior scientists.

The research environment stimulates the curiosity and is ideally suited to develop an academic attitude, to acquire knowledge and skills, to learn how to define, analyze and solve a problem, and to train how to present and discuss results. Courses and working classes concern small groups, while the students are in one-to-one contact with a staff member during their research periods. We are committed to show that a graduate study in the sciences is far from solitary, but rather that, it is social and collegial.

The Leiden Graduate School of Science aims to provide an international academic environment with an appreciable number of master and PhD students from abroad. Moreover the same applies to the scientific staff and the post-doctorate fellows. English is the language of the courses, the colloquia, the scientific meetings and the daily conversations in the research groups.

Many of our graduates consider their years of education at Leiden Science to be some of the most fulfilling years of their professional lives. Our MSc and PhD alumni go on to hold positions in the front ranks of research and teaching, policy and administration across the world.

I hope that you will be inspired by our programmes and am looking forward to welcoming you in Leiden in the near future.

Prof. dr. Geert de Snoo Dean Faculty of Science

Research profilesTo enhance our impact and visibility we have organized most of our activities around two large and recognizable profile areas: ‘Fundamentals of science’ and ‘Bioscience: the science base of health’. These areas offer newopportunities for fundamental research across the boundaries of our disciplines and connect with important societalchallenges. Our key facilities, such as NeCEN, Lorentz Center, the paramagnetic NMR facility, Cell Observatory, Metabolomics Centre and the new Leiden Center of Data Science are the platforms were scientists meet, exchangeknowledge and share research infrastructure.

Bioscience: the science base of health > Leiden Institute of Chemistry (LIC) > Institute Biology Leiden (IBL) > Leiden Institute of Physics (LION) > Leiden Amsterdam Centre for Drug Research (LACDR) > LIACS (Leiden Institute of Advanced Computer Science)
