Science and Engineering board Quantera Mid-term review 13 November 2019
Thierry Debuisschert
Quantum Flagship, 2019 2
VISION AND OBJECTIVES OF THE QUANTUM FLAGSHIP
Develop in Europe a so-called quantum web, where quantum computers, simulators and
sensors are interconnected via quantum communication networks.
Goals underlying this vision:
• To consolidate and expand European scientific leadership and excellence in quantum
research, including education and training
• To kick-start a competitive European industry in quantum technologies
• To make Europe a dynamic and attractive region for innovative research, business and
investments in quantum technologies
Quantum Flagship, 2019 3
GOVERNANCE STRUCTURE OF THE QUANTUM FLAGSHIP
• Involve all stakeholders in QT:
Academia / industry / RTO / policy
makers
• Coordinate European and National
initiatives
Members
• 20 coordinators of a Quantum Flagship projects
• 2 representatives of the projects funded by QuantERA,
Chair: T. Debuisschert
Vice Chair: S. Wehner
Observers
• The QCN Chair and QCN Vice Chair
• the QuantERA project is represented by the two coordinators.

Common activities
• Goal: all projects work as a single project, the Flagship
• Take benefit of the progress of all projects
• Avoid redundancy
• Meetings and teleconferences
• Vienna / Grenoble / Brussels
• Identification of collaborations
• Many collaboration propositions, inside the pillars, but also between of the pillars:
• Development of photonic platforms
• Diamond Material
• NMR protocols
• Common conferences
• Basel Quantum Metrology and Sensing Conference 2020 (ASTERIQS, MacQsimal)
Quantum Flagship, 2019 6
Benchmarks • Context
• Specific request from the EC to the flagship projects
• Complient with the objectives and duration of the projects (3 years)
• Purpose
• measure the performances and achievements
• compare various platforms
• evaluate the level of maturity
• evaluate the existence of a market
• Status
• Benchmarks established on a per pillar basis
• Identification of component / integration / system benchmarks
• Flagship benchmarks report

Other activities
• International collaboration
• Identify possible collaborations with the US
• to be updated to take into account recent EU/US discussions
• Japan / EU / US workshop in dec.
• Quantum computing infrastructure:
• a first report, including contributions from projects involved in quantum computing, has been endorsed by the SEB
in July.
• Contribution to the Strategic Research Agenda
• Promotion of the Quantum Flagship
• Quantum Tech Boston 11-12 sept 2019
• Standards4quantum, Brussels 28-29 March 2019
