Foreword

This list of learning resources identifies high-quality resources that have been recommended by the Ministry of Education to support the curriculum, Science 3. This list will be updated as new resources are recommended and older ones are no longer available. A list of core learning resources can be found on the

Ministry of Education website.

(CAN) indicates that a Canadian contributed to the development of the resource and/or that it includes Canadian content. (SK) indicates that a Saskatchewan person contributed to the development of the resource and/or that it includes Saskatchewan content. (FNMI) indicates that a First Nations, Métis, or Inuit person contributed to the development of the resource and/or that it includes First Nations, Métis, or Inuit content.

Recommended Online Video Education Resources (ROVER) offers video programs that have been purchased by the ministry for use in PreK-12 schools. Each recommended program contains a hyperlink directly to the program and accompanying resources (if provided).

Other resources beyond those recommended in this list may effectively support the curriculum, Science 3. It remains the responsibility of educators to preview and select materials that best meet the needs of their students, school, and community. Educators should choose these materials in accordance with the school division’s learning resources selection policy.

Pricing of the learning resources included this document is subject to change without notice.

Supplies are an essential component of an effective science program, leading to the development of deeper understanding of scientific concepts through hands-on inquiry. Some supplies may be collected; others may be constructed; and many may be purchased. School divisions may wish to purchase and assemble kits to support units of study that can be shared among schools. Schools may wish to purchase general supplies that should be available in every school.

The Ministry of Education expresses its appreciation to publishers, producers, and distributors who have provided learning resources for evaluation, and gratefully acknowledges the contributions made by educators who served as evaluators.

Children of the Earth . . . RememberAuthor/Illustrator: Schimmel, Schim

AnnotationMother Earth asks us to share and protect her. She talks of the animals that first inhabited Earth. With the arrival of people, humans and animals co-existed and shared Mother Earth. As humans started to outnumber animals, they forgot about Mother Earth. Humans no longer shared the land, water, and sky with the animals. Schimmel’s paintings provide students with opportunities to discuss why Mother Earth needs protection.

The Chinese Thought of It: Amazing Inventions and InnovationsAuthor: Ye, Ting-xing

Annotation(CAN) The Chinese people used the resources around them to improve their lives. Travel and trade were facilitated with the development of the paddleboat. The dragon-spine water lift allowed the Chinese to move water from the river to a field or reservoir. The Chinese were among the first to invent processes for working with metal. Health and healing practices, such as inoculations, are believed to be used as early as the 10th century CE.

The book includes photographs, illustrations, a table of contents, a note on the symbols used in the book, and an index.

Electricity and Magnetism: Stop Faking It!: Finally Understanding Science So You Can Teach ItAuthor: Robertson, William C.Illustrator: Diskin, Brian

AnnotationThis resource contains information and activities on electricity, circuits and electronics, and magnetism. It includes reading supports such as advance organizers, labelled diagrams with captions, headings, and chapter reviews. Other supporting features include highlighted text for key concepts, and suggestions for using graphic organizers to organize new information.

This title addresses teachers’ concerns about content and helps to fill in any gaps of understanding that may exist. Emphasis is on “getting” the science rather than memorizing facts and formulas. By covering the foundational concepts of static electricity, current electricity, and magnetism, this book helps to build a scientific model that demonstrates the relationship between electricity and magnetism.

This book includes a student resource handbook that contains guidelines and supports for scientific thinking, lab safety and design, math support, and note-taking suggestions.

Included are a table of contents, a glossary, and an index.

Fire!: The Renewal of a ForestAuthor: Godkin, Celia

Annotation(CAN) The forest has been dry and scorched for weeks. One afternoon, a hot wind blows and storm clouds gather. Lightning strikes a tree in the meadow and ignites the dry vegetation. No life remains in the burnt forest. As the years slowly pass, seeds start to germinate and small creatures inhabit the forest. Students will learn that fire is sometimes good for the regeneration of forests.

How Many Seeds in a Pumpkin?Author: McNamara, Margaret Illustrator: Karas, G. Brian

AnnotationMr. Tiffin brings three pumpkins to class, one large, one medium, and one small pumpkin. Robert guesses that the largest pumpkin has one million seeds; Elinor thinks that the medium pumpkin has 500 seeds; and Anna estimates that the little pumpkin contains 22 seeds. Charlie does not guess at all. The students think of different groupings to count the seeds in the pumpkins. The class learns that being the largest pumpkin does not mean it contains the most pumpkin seeds.

Living Sunlight: How Plants Bring the Earth to LifeAuthors: Bang, Molly and Chisholm, PennyIllustrator: Bang, Molly

Annotation(CAN) Using the sun as the narrator, photosynthesis is examined. The sun’s energy melts glaciers, warms the land and the sea, and creates wind. All living things need the sun’s energy to survive. Children will understand that photosynthesis is important to all life forms and that without plants, there would be no life on Earth. Monarch and MilkweedAnnotationThis DVD program introduces the life cycle of the monarch butterfly and its relationship with the host plant, the milkweed. As spring arrives, the milkweed sprouts through the earth and starts to grow. The monarch butterfly arrives and feeds from the milkweed. After mating, the monarch butterfly uses the plant to lay its eggs. Metamorphosis occurs as the caterpillar develops into a butterfly. The monarch butterfly migrates to Mexico in the fall.

Throughout the growing season, the milkweed grows pods that open in the fall and the seeds are dispersed in the wind. Each spring, the cycle of life starts again for both the monarch butterfly and milkweed.
