    Presidents Note:

Hello everyone! Wow,almost a year has passed sincethe June 2011 Stirling CityHistorical Society (SCHS)election. In this past year, theSCHS Board of Directors,Officers and Volunteers haveaccompl-ished quite a bit. TheMuseum Complex groundshave been cleaned to create aDefensible Space, the trees

have been trimmed and thedecaying Maple tree behind theLibrary has been removed(wood was given away topeople who needed it). TheParadise Unified School District(PUSD) is helping us by havingstudents build shelves neededfor the south room in theLibrary. Also, PUSD has givenSCHS access to the schoolbuilding here in Stirling Cityallowing us to use anything weneed for our MuseumComplex. In April of this year,

Sierra Pacific Industries (SPI)donated $1,000.00 toward aheating system for themuseum. We now haveenough funding to begin theprocess of securing bids.

    Inside this issue:

Sometimes it's almostscary how historicalinformation or an artifactcome to light. Almostsince CalFire, then CDF,deeded the Stirling CityRanger Station to thehistorical society, the

members have discussedreplacing the station signwith one similar to theoriginal. It sat on aconcrete block betweenthe Ranger's Residenceand the station office. The block is still there, but the original sign islong gone.

Early in 2012 yourhistorian was asked tofind an old photo thatshowed the sign. Hedidn't remember seeingsuch a photo in anycollection of which hewas aware. So he phonedGeorge Morris, Chief of

CalFire's Butte Unit, to see if his organization had aphoto or drawing of the sign. Chief Morris said that heknew of none, but that he thought he knew thewhereabouts of the old original sign. In less than a week it was in the possession of your historical society on whatthe Chief called a "forever loan." The only stipulationwas that it never be displayed outdoors to avoidconfusing the public who might think that the old RangerStation buildings were the current fire station.

One might think that this is the happy end of the story. But no, there is "the rest of the story."

Calli-Jane Burch, Executive Director ofthe Butte County Fire Safe Council, received a certificate of appreciation onApril 15 from Marshall Schaefer,President, Stirling City Historical Societyat the Stirling City Community Hall. Ms.Burch spoke about fire safety, includingthe wildfire community resources andprograms available, such as Doom theBroom, to eradicate invasive Scotchbroom plant throughout Butte County.

The SCHS is looking forward to betterserving the community.

Special Thanks to Mike Greer, PUSD Trustee at Large (andSCHS member) for connecting

PUSD and SCHS in fostering youth involvement in ourcommunity history.

    - Marshall

    Thanks for the Visit!

When he delivered the station sign to Stirling City, yourhistorian called Station Captain Art Salinas over to look atit. Captain Salinas has been at the Stirling City Fire Stationfor 11 years and the thought was that he would beinterested in seeing it. He was, but then he said that theoriginal sign for the Bald Mountain Fire lookout was storedat the lookout. That was verrry interesting as the StirlingCity Ranger Station and the Bald Mountain lookout havealways been like "two peas in a pod" when it came towildland fire protection. Back on the phone with ChiefMorris, your historian was told that the society could havethe Bald Mountain sign under the same condition. Whenthe snow clears at Bald Mountain, the sign will be deliveredto the historical society. This still is not the end of the story. A month or so afterdelivering the station sign your historian was looking at theJune 2003 edition of Tales of the Paradise Ridge. Backthen, he was editor of this publication and wrote a two-partarticle titled "Fighting Wildland Fire from Stirling City," thefirst part on the history of the ranger station and the secondon the lookout. Guess what was on the cover of the Juneedition? A photo of the ranger Station office with a clearview of the sign. Oh well, if your historian had rememberedthe photo a month or so earlier, he never would have

phoned Chief Morris and both original signs would still bemoldering away perhaps never to see the light of day.

A new Ranger Station sign will be made for the museumcomplex and probably placed on the concrete block. It willbe styled after the original, but done in such a way thatcauses no public confusion.

Stirling City HistoricalSociety members, come to the general meeting and cast your vote for 2012-2013 Officers and Board of Directors! This is perhaps the most importantmeeting of the whole year. The meeting will be held at the Community Hall in

    VOTE ON JUNE 10 TH!!!

It has truly been a joy and pleasure having worked with the Board of Directors (BOD) and Officers of the historical society as Chairperson. The people serving as your Directors and Officers have certainly worked hard this past year and are a hallmark in the history of the society.

Events, fundraisers, guest speakers, potlucks, and truly informative general membership meetings have rounded out the year.

Behind the scenes financially, we are sound and in the black with membership on the rise. The BOD and organizational officers have prioritized maintenance and upkeep of the Museum/Library complex.

Exciting and innovative displays are planned to excite your (and the publics)interest. Please support those members running for Director or Officer positions.Oh and bring a friend to our next meeting!

    Respectfully,

    Dirk Wohlau, Chairperson
