Writing Tip of the Week!

Students, do you want to improve your writing? Try this: Vary how you start each sentence in an essay. Try starting a sentence with a (ly) word, like this:

Eventually, she finished her essay.

Tutorial Club!

Tutorial club is a new club starting at ORHS at the request of students. Founding members are junior, Linda Pupiales and senior, Giovanna Alonso. Tutorial Club is being sponsored by ORHS teachers: Diane Peterson and Amber Godwin. At least 40 students were present at the orientation meeting regarding how Tutorial Club would operate. Students who were unable to attend the meeting still have a chance to join. At this time, the tutor applications are being completed, collected, and processed. Having so many students excited about being tutors in a variety of subjects indicates that our new club is off to a strong start! An announcement will be made to let everyone know when the club's peer tutorials will begin. When we do start, after school tutorials will be in Mrs. Peterson's room B-109 Monday through Thursday until 4:00. If students want to meet with a peer tutor before school, they will meet in Ms. Godwin's room C-227.

PSAT!

The PSAT test will be given on Wednesday, October 11, to all current 10th and 11th grade students. Seniors will have late arrival that day at 10:30 a.m. Students should eat a good breakfast and arrive at school on time. Because the PSAT is a timed test, once the test begins, late students will not be allowed to enter a testing room, and makeup tests will not be given. Students should bring a calculator.

Bring One of These Calculators

· Graphing calculator

· Scientific calculator

· Four-function calculator

Leave These Devices at Home

· Anything that can connect to the Internet

· Anything that makes noise or “talks”

· Calculators that use electrical outlets

· Calculators with QWERTY keypads

· Tablets or cellphones

· Laptops or handheld computers

· Paper-tape calculators

· Calculators with a pen-input device or stylus

Calculator Smarts

· Bring your own calculator. You can’t share one.

· Don’t bring a brand-new calculator. Bring one you know.

· Practice for the test using the same calculator you’ll use on test day.

· Decide how to solve a problem, then decide if you need your calculator. This might surprise you, but calculators don’t always save time. In fact, the Math Test includes some questions where it’s faster not to use a calculator, even though you’re allowed to.

3 Reasons Students Should Take the PSAT!

1. Great Practice for the SAT

By taking the PSAT, you'll receive free access to the College Board’s My College Quickstart™, where you can try hundreds of practice questions to help you improve test-taking skills. The College Board also provides you with a customized study plan based on your PSAT performance, allowing you to focus on those areas which need the most help. Studies have shown that students who take the exam more than once often score higher on subsequent tests. Those who have the opportunity to take the exam several times may also find they are more confident and relaxed when moving on to the SAT and/or ACT.

2. Connect to Colleges

Students who take the PSAT can opt-in to the College Board’s free Student Search Service. This service allows colleges to identify students based on several factors, including, but not limited to:

· Intended major

· Grade point average

· State residency

More than 1,100 different colleges participate in the Student Search Service, giving you the opportunity to connect with colleges that you may be unfamiliar with or had not previously considered. You also typically receive brochures and other marketing materials, as well as information on campus tours and other upcoming events.

3. Gain Access to Scholarships

Perhaps the best kept secret about the PSAT is the opportunity to earn free money for college. Students who take the test during their junior year may be selected to participate in one of the scholarship and/or recognition programs directly linked to the exam.

PTO Information!

Please find PTO Letter to parents and Membership Form at the end of this newsletter.

New SAT Electronic Device Collection Policy!

Beginning with the October 2017 SAT® School Day and weekend SAT administrations, the College Board is requiring supervisors to collect all cell phones and wearable technology from test takers before administering the test.

This reflects the College Board’s ongoing efforts to enhance the security of the SAT, ensure the integrity of scores delivered to colleges and universities, and protect the honest students who make up the vast majority of test takers.

Students are asked not to wear smart watches and to please leave cell phones at home or in their cars if they do not want them taken up. Each classroom has a phone if they need to make a call for pick up after the test is over and students are dismissed. Test administrators will not be held responsible for any electronic devices that are damaged, lost or stolen. Students should be aware that if they bring any type of electronic device to testing it will be taken up before the testing starts.

Oak Ridge HS Special Occasion Dress Code Throughout the school year, we have several special events and ask that you always remember that decorum counts. While planning for your upcoming event, please keep the following attire standards in mind. If you have a question about what to wear for these occasions, please check with a counselor, administrator or event sponsor. Many of these are once-in-a-lifetime events and we want them to be special for you.

Appropriate attire for Homecoming and Prom includes the following:

Spaghetti straps and strapless dresses will be permitted.

Two-piece dresses must overlap. No midriff may show when arms are raised.

Mesh, see-through, and revealing cut-outs will not be allowed.

Front and back of dress must not be too low-cut or revealing. Back of dress may not go below natural waist.

Short dresses must not be higher than 4 inches above the knee. This includes any slits on long dresses, dresses with sheer/mesh bottoms, and the front of bi-level dresses.

Underwear must be worn.

Boys must wear standard formal wear which includes dark business suits and appropriate footwear. Blue jeans are not allowed.

Flip-flops and slides are not allowed.

Proper and formal grooming is expected.

No non-formal headwear (caps, etc.) allowed.

Costumes, party accessories, and sunglasses are not allowed.

If you are not dressed appropriately, you will not be allowed to enter the Prom so if in doubt, check with an administrator prior to the event or don’t wear it. This is a special occasion and we don’t want you to miss it.

Appropriate attire for Homecoming, Senior Awards, National Honor Society Inductions, Athletic Banquets and Other Special Events includes the following:

Males should dress in semi-formal wear including slacks, dress shirt, tie and nice shoes. Jackets and ties are encouraged but not required.

The Wingspan

Dear Oak Ridge Parents,

It’s hard to believe that Fall is here already. I love this time of year with football games, the anticipation of cooler days and nights and the seasonal drinks at Starbucks! Fall is a busy time filled with sports, school activities and community festivals. It’s also a time to volunteer for something you believe in. My heart was filled with pride for our Color Guard Team who made 644 Homecoming Mums for the entire Senior Class of Kingwood High School! These students and their parents gave their time, talent and resources in order to make Homecoming a meaningful, and special event for those seniors who lost their school. I was also amazed and proud of the Oak Ridge High School students who created a Cinderella’s Closet. They started a Homecoming Dress Drive for girls affected by Hurricane Harvey and the dresses have been pouring in from across the country. These selfless acts of kindness and thoughtfulness for others should be encouraged and celebrated, and I believe it is contagious if we all take time to think of others in need.

I have had the chance to meet some of our Oak Ridge parents at the grade level presentations in the past two weeks. It was a pleasure talking to you and I appreciate those who have joined PTO by filling out the 2017/2018 Membership Form. If you have not done so but would like to join PTO, please print off the membership form and drop if off in an envelope marked PTO at the front office of either campus. Your membership will make a difference in what we can accomplish for the school!

The Homecoming Dance is next Saturday, October 7th in our cafeteria. Of course once it is decorated, it will be transformed into a magical place! Thank you to those parents who have volunteered to provide desserts and or time to work the dance. We still need more desserts and volunteers so please check out the website signupgenius.com and help make this night a wonderful one for our students!

Calling all Freshman Parents: If you have not ordered your child’s 2021 t-shirt yet, you have until Saturday, September 30th. This will be your last chance to order this shirt in the size you need. I only have about a half dozen shirts in small left in our stock. If you are interested, please go to this web site to order your child’s shirt. Once they are available, they will be brought to school and issued to your child. The site is: https://orhs2021.itemorder.com/

I hope you all have a great weekend and are able to get out and enjoy the nice weather!
