SEATTLE PUBLIC SCHOOLS VOLUNTEER

• A volunteer is an unsalaried person authorized by the school board to perform volunteer services for the school district. A volunteer shall serve in such capacity without compensation or employee benefits of any type, except for worker’s compensation as provided for in the district’s self-insured program. All volunteers serve at the discretion of the Superintendent without any expressed of implied privileges beyond those found in this handbook and may be released from volunteering if so deemed by the Superintendent or designee.

PURPOSES OF SCHOOL VOLUNTEER PROGRAM

• To provide academic achievement and district goals, to assist teachers in providing basic skills, to enrich quality of instruction, to enhance interpersonal experiences for students, and to assist school staff with support services

• To increase students’ motivation for learning• To support the dropout prevention program by

providing supplementary instruction such as, but not limited to, tutoring/mentoring

• To build an understanding of school programs among interested citizens and business/community organization partnership

• To strengthen school/parent/community relations through positive participation• To promote parent involvement by actively

supporting and seeking collaboration with PTA, school/community advisory councils, and other parent groups• To enhance district educational programs, not to

displace district employees

RIGHTS OF VOLUNTEERS

• Knowledge about the school (policies, staff, programs)• Training for the job (which may include continuing

education)• Sound guidance and direction by the school staff• Be heard in planning/giving suggestions)• Recognition (Volunteer Day and the like)

ROLES OF VOLUNTEER COORDINATOR

• Survey the needs of teachers• Recruiting and registering volunteers• Arranging for orientation and training• Placing volunteers by matching their

skills/interests to job assignment• Serving as resource for volunteers• Keeping record s of volunteer applications and

service hours• Coordinating school recognition events for

volunteers

SAFETY AND LIABILITY ISSUE

• Location to work with student (always work on public place, on site)• Never give student a ride in your car• When receive information relating to possible

abusive/neglect situation, report to principal, counselor or teacher• Only relevant personal information to be revealed

to students• Hugging and safe touches (front hug should be

avoided)
