Term 1, Week 9, 4th April 2019

Welcome/Velkommen/Kia Ora Koutou

Last week we had two teams participate in the EPRO8 competition held at Dannevirke South School.

Well done to our Year 5/6 team who placed 4th , and to our Year 7/8 team who placed 5th. The teams

worked well together. The students faced challenges and were able to manipulate a number of

technology and various pieces of intricate equipment to solve a range of problems. Thank you to the

SSG, who supported this event. Thank you to Mrs Brooks and Mr Clayton for organising these teams and

supporting the teams in the competition.

Haley Black was on work experience last week as part of her school

programme and to fundraise for her school - Dannevirke High School. A huge

thank you Haley, you did amazingly, we thoroughly enjoyed your attitude,

work ethics and bubbly personality. You are going to be great in the

workforce. We looking forward to you working with us in the future should

the opportunity arise.

We have been contacted by Tararua Alliance and we are pleased to announce

that they are going to create a carpark for us. Work will commence on

Monday 8 April 2019 on Horsa Road. The topsoil scrapped from this will be

used by Eric to fill any holes in the school grounds. There will be a pile of

dirt/metal scrapings that will be available for the community to take, once

Eric has taken what he needs. If you would like some, please see Maxine in

the office.

We managed to get through April Fools Day with no pranks pulled on any teachers! A

first, we must be lucky! However, I do believe that a few boys in Everest tried to pull

a prank on Mr Clayton, but those clever girls turned the prank quickly onto the boys!

Mr Clayton was oblivious to the whole prank. 10 house points to the girls!

Thank you to all parents/caregivers, who spent time at the 3 Way Conferences. I hope you managed to

ask the questions you needed to, found out some great information about your child/ren. Most

importantly further developed your relationships with the teachers.

Congratulations to Aryn, Drew, Lachlan, Natalie, Olivia, & Megan for their Swimming at our Inter-

Schools Swimming Sports. The students worked well with the other schools

that make the Country Schools Team, great support, well behaved and all

represented Country Schools highly.

During Term 2 we will be beginning our Electives Programmes again. If you have an interest or would like

to run or organise an elective, please see Maxine in the office. You are all talented, please share your

talent.

I wish you a wonderful weekend and I look forward to spending the last week of Term 1 with you.

From the BoT The BoT are please to inform you that finally the carpark on Horsa Road is going to be available in Term 2 for our

staff, making more spaces for our parents/caregivers at the front of the school. This has been a project the

Council has talked about for many years. The work will commence on Monday 8 April and should be completed

weather permitting by the beginning of Term 2.

The BoT have finalised our school Charter, Strategic Plan and Annual Plan for 2019. We wish to thank you all for

sharing your thoughts, opinions and ideas to make this document come alive. It is available in our school office and

on our website. Please take the time to read it. Thank you.

We will be focussing on Strategic Goal 1 over the next few weeks. GREAT LEARNING

They are the “School Swimming Pool” & “Alcohol/Drugs and Other Harmful Substances” policies. You can find a copy on the reception desk in the office, or on our school website. If you have any questions about this, please feel free to talk to Maxine in the office. Think about joining out BoT to support creating opportunities for our tamariki. A reminder there are a number of Union meetings coming up and we are reluctant to close school. Please speak to any member of staff about these meetings.

Easter Raffle - We have 1 more week so keep up the great work! Money in by next Wednesday 10th April-Raffle

will be drawn Friday 12th at our Easter gathering. We have already had money in and some families ask for more

raffle tickets to sell!

This week we also had this beautiful ‘koha box’ dropped in to the school, kindly donated by Jeff Bryan. Such a

beautiful piece to have for functions and events. Thank you so much Jeff!

Piano Lessons Ruth Appleton is seeking new students 7 years and older. Lessons are very competitive at $18.50 per lesson. This is a great skill to learn and is a way for students to develop hand-eye coordination. There are keyboards at school available for hire to support learning and practise at home. Please contact the office if you have any questions or are interested.

Asthma Education

Te Kete Hauora O Rangitane are offering our He mate Huango Service (asthma Education). This service offers an in school programme for children suffering from Asthma as well as education & support for staff members.

Our service allows education for children to be held in schools to help identify triggers and better manage signs

and symptoms.

Our service is used to ideally connect schools with whanau and GP’s together so we can put an up to date asthmas plan in place

Some forms have already been sent home with students who are noted as having asthma. If you did not receive

one of these forms, but would like one, please see Maxine in the office.

Redet I want to take this opportunity to thank all the parents who made time to come and spend time finding out about their child’s progress at the three way conferences. It was great to have a 100% turnout, a tribute to the commitment of you all, to your tamariki. Education is certainly a team effort so thank you very much. It was wonderful to have so many parents come and share their children’s learning at the merit assembly. The tamariki were very excited to share their learning with you. The tamariki have loved learning and practising Jump Jam and singing. We have been very fortunate in Redet this term to have had Mrs Black help us. We made an apple pie from the apples we picked, made our faces using different types of wool from the heritage breeds owned by Brian Hales and we completed our little people for the fence. Wishing you all a restful family time over the upcoming holidays. It has certainly been an action packed, fun filled term.

Valkyrie We have had the opportunity to practise for the Epro8 Technology Challenge in Dannevirke. The students had the opportunity to work together as a team. Each team had to plan, using the equipment supplied, a way to solve a problem. The whole experience was a practical way of testing design features such as what makes the strongest structure, how do circuits work, working to the problems set dimensions and sharing and using the team’s ideas. Look at for our completed Little People paintings for the fence!

We have been fortunate to work with Whaea Tania this term. She has this to share with you.
