WHACKY WELLY WIN AGAIN!

Chew Valley School's Young Enterprise team took part in the Bristol, Bath & BANES Area Finals of the Company of the Year Award at Clevedon Hall. This involved designing a Trade Stand, writing a Company Report, speaking to judges and delivering a 4 minute presentation about their experiences of running a business. The presentation team (Dan Stuckey, Melissa Penney, Ben Coombs and Verity Whitlock) impressed and amused judges and were winners of the 'Best Company Presentation'.

The business idea of Whacky Welly is paint your own Welly kits aimed at primary

children. Each kit includes a pair of wellies, 4 squeezy tubes of 3D paints, instructions and a re-usable Eco cotton Welly storage bag. This is third win by the team since September; they were awarded 'Best Customer Service' at the St Nicholas Christmas market and 'Best Trade Stand' at the Spring market that took place at Cabot Circus in March.

HARRY’S CRACKING IDEA

Harry Power (7H) beat 77 other entries to win the Chew Valley School 'Design our Gromit' competition, organised by Mr O'Connell and Mrs Folland. The school has its very own Gromit as part of the hugely exciting Gromit Unleashed Appeal that will take place throughout Bristol this summer. Famous artists such as Quentin Blake, Alex Scheffler, Paul Smith and Cath Kidston have already painted their Gromits which will form part of a public art display with the aim of raising money for Bristol Children's Hospital.

So how did Harry Power's design scoop the winning place? The judges were bowled over by Harry's idea to decorate Gromit as an array of fruit & vegetables! community. Harry also had the clever idea of displaying Gromit near the canteen to encourage people to choose more fruit. Gromit will start to be dressed in his fruity attire this week with the aim of meeting the deadline of 10th June so it can be displayed on the School's Programe page of the Gromit Unleashed website. Well done Harry and to all the other finalists: Ailsa Mackie, Corinne Bowen, Ella Scott, Carys Yeatman, Cam Wiltshire, Alice Taber, Ben Nield, Anna Hester, Tom Garland, Bex Betton & Freddie Cardew. All of these fantastic design ideas will be displayed in school after half term. Thank you again to the judging panel: Anna Harley, Justine Thorley, Lizzie Shuttleworth, Ann King, Emily Parkes, Sara Hayes, and Gaynor Henry.

GCSE Textiles

The GCSE Textile students have worked hard with the practical element on their coursework producing an array of unusual garments. Their brief was to design a garment for a special event, using the colours and imagery of a chosen culture.

Chew Valley School Summer Fete 2013

Come along and join in the fun at Chew Valley School’s Summer Fete on Saturday 13th July, 12 – 4pm. This year’s fete has the theme of Brunel and the Victorian Era, in recognition of Isambard Kingdom Brunel’s fantastic achievements and of course the Lower School Production. With free entry and numerous activities to get involved in, what better way to spend a (hopefully) sunny Saturday afternoon? Some of our attractions include; Crazy Golf, Table top games, a bouncy castle, strawberries & cream, sporting competitions

for all age groups, food and drink and the return of the ‘Pizza Monkey’. And if that isn’t enough to keep you entertained, we also have a matinee performance of the fantastic ‘Brunel’ production performed by Year 7 – Year 9 students of Chew Valley School. A fun filled day out for the whole family.... fancy dress optional. Look forward to seeing you! For more information check the school website or if you would like to be involved, email Elizabeth Bainbridge ([email protected])

TENNER TYCOONS

A number of students in year 7, 8 and 10 are taking part in the national Tenner Challenge that encourages young people to turn £10 seed capital into a lot more in just one month! Ideas include Billy Abernethy-Hope's screen printed t-shirts, Edith Wilkins's hand knitted scarves, movie nights hosted by Alisha Georgiou, Becky Muse and Ellie-Mae Ellis and Chelsie Taylor's framed portrait photographs. Billy Abernethy-Hope has already been awarded joint runner-up in the logo competition. On his design, external judge Scott Snashfold (Designer) commented: “I thought that this logo was very eye-catching. I like the use of handwritten typeface upon the bold shapes and I can envision this logo used to make some really striking T-shirt designs.” You can see Billy's logo for 'Sweet' in the Media section of Tenner's website.

Year 11 News

On 10 May, year 11 completed their final day of compulsory education. There was the usual shirt and yearbook signing along with many tears and reminiscences. The tears of sadness changed to tears of laughter during Mr Mallett’s farewell assembly when he referred back to the letters written to him by some of the year group when they were in year 6. The performance of “Rappers Delight” by “Snoop Dog Uppington” and the rest of the crew provoked much laughter while at the same time reminding us of the fantastic talent we have in this year group. Year 11 Rugby The Year 11 team won the super 8's final vs Priory School with Nick Manville voted as man of the match. They were also victorious in the district final, beating Wellsway School. Alex Price and Ben Grant were voted men of the match. Mr Jones thanks the boys for their outstanding level of commitment and effort over the past 5 years and he hopes to be playing against some of you soon!' Year 11 Hockey As the year 11s prepare to leave and are frantically revising for their upcoming GCSEs, they have had some unfinished business to sort out. As BANES champions, winning their Hockey league, they progressed to the next round which involved playing the winners of other counties.

The event took place in the lovely grounds of Clifton College on a beautiful sunny day. Unfortunately, due to exam commitments, a couple of the usual squad were unable to play and so some Y10 players kindly stepped in. The first match was against St Mary Redcliffe and this was quite a fairly fought game with some brilliant play, lots of chances created and, finally, Chew managed to secure a 2-1 win. Next up was Priory who are known to be very tough competition. The girls were tired and had to play the next game straight away. They had played so well and knew that they had to up their game even further if they were to have any chance of winning. It was very tense on the sideline watching all of our attempts at goal blocked and seeing how many times Priory broke away. We stayed strong and with some fantastic communication, great stick work and sheer determination and drive we won 1-0! Year 11 were then crowned County Champions. Yr11 Rounders Due to exams, this has been an extremely short season for the rounders team but there was just enough time to compete in a tournament against other schools in BANES. Most of the team have played together since year 7 and are very much aware of each others strengths and of who plays better in which position which gave them a head start over other schools who see rounders as more of a social activity. The first couple of games were won comfortably until we had to play Ralph Allen who proved to be a little more competitive. Fortunately for us, we won the match and so progressed into the final against Norton Hill. It was a tough game, the pressure was on and cracks began to show. Mistakes were made by both teams and after an ‘interesting’ call made by the umpire, Norton Hill won the game by one rounder. The team should be proud of their efforts and looking forward to taking part in the mixed tournament next year! Miss Daly would like to thank all of the regular players for their commitment to training, organising teams and matches, We hope you have enjoyed being part of the team and representing the school and hopefully many of you will continue to do so next year.

The GCSE exams are now well under way and we all look forward to the Leavers’ Dinner at Ashton Court on 27 June. The tutor team, Mrs O’Callaghan and Miss Straw would like to send all our best wishes to the pupils for the future and our thanks to parents for their wonderful support.

Year 10 News

BNES Athletics Competition

Teams from Y7-11 competed in the recent BNES Athletics competition. The Year 10/11 girls came second against strong opposition from fifteen other schools in BNES. Particularly good performances came from Holly Williams in the 3000m and Ella Sage. Well done to all who took part. Fund Raising Three pupils Danielle Hynam, Danielle Ireland and Holly Dando completed a sponsored silence to raise money for Cancer Research. The raised a total of £247.72. Well done girls and tank you to all teachers, students, friends and relatives that sponsored them. Year 10 Exams With exam week over, Year 10s are now concentrating on preparing for science module exams in June. Many are also preparing for controlled assessment in English, History and Geography with field visits to come to Avebury, Stanton Drew and Lulworth. In other curriculum areas project work is currently being completed that will form part of their GCSE assessment.

Year 9 News

As this review is written, Year 9 are finishing some important end of year assessments in maths, English and science. The outlook is positive with many teachers reporting an increased attainment in pupils’ academic levels. However, this is no time to relax as there are still Thorpe Park places up for grabs!

Netball

Promising sports woman Corrine Bowen 9E recently played for AVON Ladies netball. The one day tournament at Clifton College gave Corrine the opportunity to play with the U16 County players from across region from

Gloucestershire to Cornwall & Jersey. Corinne had a great but exhausting time!

Pointless

If you are familiar with the hit TV game show Pointless then you can imagine how much fun pupils and staff have had replicating the quiz in school. The Pointless team consists of Dan Bell, Rosie Pope, Jake Benfield, Luke Matthews, Jasmine Chappell, Ollie Chamberlain, Davey Armstrong, Joe Calverley, George Phillips and Tom Stone. The team would like to thank Miss Gillespie for her support and knowledge of the quiz show.

Fame Jr Budding young actor George Miles has been quietly making a name for himself through his performances in Fame Jr. George is part of the Curtain Up Theatre School and following this review by Graeme Savage of Noda, he is clearly on the road to acting success! “I felt that George Miles as Schlomo stood out with his mature and understated performance, which managed to draw real empathy from the audience for his ultimately

Page 5: SCHOOL SOCIETY RACE NIGHT children. Each kit includes a ... · performance of “Rappers Delight” by “Snoop Dog Uppington” and the rest of the crew provoked much laughter while

doomed relationship with Carmer, in relatively few lines and scenes”.

Y9 Bake Off Everyone knows we love cake at Chew Valley! From cake sales to staff competitions a chocolate sponge is never far from the offering. This term 9V and 9E have been having their own tutor group bake off’s. There have been some excellent efforts by all the pupils that have competed. Mr Edwards has had to get an extra gym session in due to the amount of judging he has been doing!

BANES football District footballers Toby Harding, Matt Penny and Kai Long all played a strong part in the recent fixture against North Somerset. The game was 0-0 at the end of normal time and with Mr Monk and his team well prepared for extra-time confidence was high. However, they were informed that the game would be going straight into penalties! Versatile striker come goalkeeper Kai Long, standing in for the absent George Stiles, made a string of fine saves but could not stop BANES eventually losing the spot kick finale. The boys would like

to thank Mr Monk and Mr Hankins for their support. BANES Athletics Year 9 were well represented at the recent BANES athletics competition. All the pupils gave a good account of themselves but the standout performer has to be Olly Schutt who came second in the javelin and discus – well done all!

Brunel This year’s lower school production is shaping up to be a must see. The feedback from the many year 9 pupils involved is that the rehearsals are going really well. It is really encouraging to see so many pupils involved in yet another excellent opportunity. Homework raffle Steven Bartlett 9C 100% attendance raffle Chloe Pearce 9W Tutor group of the term Miss Pipers 9H – well done!

Year 8 News

Despite the showers and cold weather, Year 8 have had plenty to smile about this term. On the summer sporting front, Finlay Macdonald, Anthony Haywood, Archie Bannister and Ollie Lowes’ commitment to tennis has been as impressive as ever. Despite losing two games to Prior Park and Colston’s, the standard of tennis was excellent. Well done to Alice Wembridge, Amy McGowan and Lauren Gardner for winning their tennis fixture against St Mary Redcliffe. Congratulations to all Year 8s who took part in the BANES Athletics District Championships on Thursday 16th May. A special mention goes to Issie Twiggs who finished 3rd in the high jump Oona Cardew for finishing 6th in the hurdles. Paris Trip On the 12th April, a dozen Year 8 pupils were lucky enough to go to Paris for a long weekend on a trip organised by Mrs Cornthwaite. For some students it was the first time to go to France or abroad, ‘After an early start in the rain, we finally arrived at our hotel (called Mr Misterbed City!) near EuroDisney just in time for tea. On our first full day, we went to the Louvre, the famous Art museum in the centre of Paris. We spent ages looking for the Mona Lisa…..it was smaller than we expected! After a delicious lunch in the Jardin des Tuileries, we went on a brilliant boat trip along the River Seine where we saw lots of famous landmarks: Notre Dame Cathedral, the Eiffel Tower and the prison where Marie Antionette was held.

On the Sunday, we had a whole 13 hrs at Euro Disney which was amazing (and sunny!). The rides were fantastic, especially Space Mountain! The highlight of the evening was a spectacular light display centred around the Disney Palace. It was so beautiful, we didn’t want to leave! It was an amazing weekend; we absolutely loved Disneyland and… we even spoke some French.! Merci aux enseignants! Next year, can we stay there for a whole weekend?!’ – Issy Haberfield Swimming to Fundraising Success Congratulations to Jay Baker in 8C who, along with Taylor Parsons, swam an amazing 200 lengths of the 25m pool at Hengrove Leisure Centre on 27th April to raise money for Cancer Research. The group of boys have raised almost £750. ‘Jay said, ‘It was exhausting swimming so many lengths but we knew it worth it to raise money for such a good cause’. Well done boys – we’re proud of your efforts!

Performing Arts Toby Holbrook, Callum Waldock, Tom Palmer, Anthony Haywood and Finlay McDonald are going from strength to strength with their upcoming rock band Radiator. They played at the Envision charity event earlier in May and

Page 7: SCHOOL SOCIETY RACE NIGHT children. Each kit includes a ... · performance of “Rappers Delight” by “Snoop Dog Uppington” and the rest of the crew provoked much laughter while

were warmly received by playing a set of timeless classics. It is incredible to think that the talented boys only formed the band (originally called Aftershock) in Y7 and that they have progressed so quickly. Catch them playing in July at the fete! Congratulations to Connie Straffon, who performed with Callum and Toby, singing ‘Price Tag’ and ‘You’re not sorry’, to rapturous applause. Magic, Zombies and Maori Dancing! Year 8 tutor groups have been busy preparing an assembly this term to share their experience of learning something new to teach the year group. A quick tour of the tutor groups confirmed what a wealth of talents the students have, from magic tricks and judo in 8W to kick-boxing in 8C! 8A started the ball rolling with their inventive assembly of ‘How to survive a Zombie Invasion’ followed by teaching us about the ‘Cup Song’ (more beautiful singing, Connie!). 8V will be teaching us how to perform the Maori dance: the Haka. We look forward to seeing some rousing movements to prepare us for Period 1!

Fraser Thomas leads the pack!

Archie prepares for battle!

Kia Waimarie! – Good Luck!

Year 7 News

Welcome to the term 5 update from Mr Loynton and wonderful Year 7 who cannot believe how quickly time has flown by and are eager to bump in to some familiar faces and old friends from Primary Schools past when Y6 hold their visit day in July. Year 7 kicked off this term with nervous anticipation for their first full Parents’ Evening. Thanks to all who attended and took full advantage of the opportunity to engage with staff, and thank you all for your continued support of your children and their time at Chew Valley School. I hope that the future Year 8 evening will be as much a celebration of success! Year 7 are undertaking the fantastic reading challenge for the term, launched by Miss Powell (English). The challenge set is to read as many books as possible with prizes for the winning tutor group. It is a chance for them to get out of their comfort zones and read a something more challenging than usual. Mr Hildrew (Deputy Headteacher) shared information about the challenge on Twitter during a Literacy discussion and teachers from across the UK marvelled at the idea. The means of assessing a winner is all about height! For every book read and reviewed by a student the librarian kindly photocopies the

spine and sticks it to one of the library pillars. Each tutor group has been aiming to read the height of an average Year 7 (set at 150cm by Miss Powell), with special prizes if they reach the height of Mr Loynton, or the man mountain that is 7C tutor, Mr Parfitt! At the last measurement 7L are just inches away from the target (see photo)! I hope you all continue your reading endeavours, even after the challenge ends!

May also saw the launch of the ‘Tenner Challenge’. My roving reporters, and contestants, Alex Rosler and Edith Wilkins (7V) explain more: “The Tenner Challenge is

Page 8: SCHOOL SOCIETY RACE NIGHT children. Each kit includes a ... · performance of “Rappers Delight” by “Snoop Dog Uppington” and the rest of the crew provoked much laughter while

all about business! The aim is that you begin at the start of May, when you are given a ten pound note as a loan. You use it to get the things you need to make and sell your product. For example cakes and scarves! At the end hopefully you have made a profit and you then pay the ten pounds back, but if you don’t you only pay back six pounds”. The girls are very grateful to Miss Folland (ICT and Business) for running the scheme, and congratulations to them for their successful pitches to sell home made cakes and scarves (if you didn’t realise from their reporting!). Congratulations also to Ned Mulholland and Mason McDicken (7W) who successfully pitched an idea to sell custom phone cases. More information can be found at www.tenner.org.uk

Tutor Assemblies! During Term 5 each of the seven tutor groups has begun to deliver their own Year assembly. It is a great experience for them to show off their talents or share an issue they feel important with the rest of the year group. 7W with Mr Wilson chose to take the idea of the reading challenge and add their own extra special twist. Mr Wilson discussed the importance of reading and good writing, and applied it to the context of films. Unimpressed with the screen writing for Iron Man 3 (one of Mr Loynton’s favourites!), Mr Wilson and 7W decided to adapt some of their own literary favourites and transfer them to the screen. First up was their take on Harry Potter (visiting the robe shop!) played by Ned Mulholland.

They also turned their hand to Roald Dahl’s The Twits and Matilda (Emma Dando as the fearsome Miss Trunchbull!).

Next up was the turn of Mr Parfitt and 7C. They decided to explore the idea of facing your fears; some suggested that doing the assembly in front of your whole year group was scary enough. But to top it off we were joined by a special guest in assembly, Mia Barlow’s beautiful pet snake, Colin (pictured)! Luke Parfitt (7C), Katie Riches (7E), Hannah Reynolds (7W) and Mr Dunford (tutor of 7L) all reluctantly volunteered to come to the front and meet Colin up close! Proof that challenges we face can be overcome with a little encouragement. Well done all involved.

Oh, the Drama! During term 5 the Year 7 Drama Club, with Mr Conway (Head of Performing Arts and 7V Tutor) at the helm, performed their rendition of ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’. Rehearsals have taken place one lunchtime a week since the Autumn and the commitment shown by all inolved has been phenomenal. Two shows were performed with Year 7 running the costume and lighting as well as performing on stage.

Page 9: SCHOOL SOCIETY RACE NIGHT children. Each kit includes a ... · performance of “Rappers Delight” by “Snoop Dog Uppington” and the rest of the crew provoked much laughter while

Anne and Lizzie Counsell, and Phoebe Edwards (7C) had this to say; “Last week, Chew Valley School Year 7 Drama Club put on a special performance of a 30 minute version of A Midsummer Night’s Dream. The performance was directed by Mr Conway and it was a huge success! There were two performances in one night and both went extremely well. Everyone enjoyed the evening and all the rehearsals running up to the play.

Thanks so much to Mr Conway, Perry Cunio (Y10), Lydia Sinclair and Hal Kelly (Y12) for all of their help”. I can attest to the quality and wonderful performance on the night and was so proud and impressed of all those who took part. An absolute credit to Chew Valley School! On the same night of the Drama Club performance there was a charity concert held in aid of Off The Record in the school hall. Well done to all of Year 7 who got involved, some of whom stayed after their own Drama performance to perform for a second set of guests at this event, contributing to a total of over £300 raised. Congratulations this term are also extended to Katie Riches of 7E who completed her

Grade 1 tap exam with a distinction. Katie is progressing so well that she has skipped Grade 2 and is working on Grade 3! During term 5 a number of Year 7 students successfully completed their Young Leaders Training with Miss Foley. These Young Leaders will now assist the Year 9 & 10 leaders during the festivals taking place over the next couple of terms. As they move up the school they will hopefully develop into strong independent leaders who I will rely on! The top 4 or 5 will be offered places in the BANES Leadership Academy in Year 10.

To finish this term’s entry I thought I would share a few photos that I take during my learning walks around the school, showing Year 7 in all their glory getting stuck in to life at Chew.

6th Form News

This term has been as packed as ever for the Sixth Form! Straight after Easter we were delighted to welcome back last year’s Year 13 for the A Level Presentation Evening. With destinations as diverse as Air Traffic Control to Zoology, it was a great opportunity to welcome back our leavers, award subject prizes and celebrate their terrific achievements in last year’s exams. It was also a chance for us to recognise the outstanding contributions of current Year 13 students to the wider life of Chew Valley. This event was swiftly followed by an outstanding Spring Recital by our A Level music students; Oli Harper, Carys Lampard, Alex Newman, Oli Edwards, Niamh Millers and Ben Brown all performing with great finesse. Year 12 students have been managing to combine campaigning and fund-raising work with their studies, thanks to their committed hard work with the youth charity Envision. The transport team has been focusing on the issues around bus services and fares for young people in the Chew Valley area. In early April the team addressed a packed B&NES Cabinet meeting at the Guildhall in Bath on this issue, and their presentation provoked spontaneous applause form everyone present along with promises to investigate the issues further from Council Leader Paul Crossley. Meanwhile the other Year 12 team working with Envision organised an inspiring and very successful fundraising concert in early May for Off the Record which showcased some of our most talented musicians and performers. The Sixth Form had two teams complete the Ten Tors expedition in challenging conditions. The 55 mile team of Harry McDonald, Joe Webb, Nick Matthews, Cameron Marshall, Luke Bales and Peter Braidley steamed around the course, while the Year 12 team of Alex Lowe, Fae Nightingale, Katie Purchase, Lewis Nightingale, Luke Treneman and Owen Burnell also did fantastically well to complete the 45-mile challenge. Henry Chamberlain in Year 13 also completed the 55-mile course with a Scout team, and all deserve huge praise for acquitting themselves so well in such tough conditions. Congratulations must also be passed on to Victoria Watts in Year 13 who won the Somerset Ladies Golf

Former Pupil Launches App!

Josh Eggleton, Chef-owner of the Pony & Trap, Chew Magna, features on a newly released app that makes cooking with kids easy. Developed by premium digital food brand, Great British Chefs, the free app features a number of Josh’s recipes including a Penne Pasta Forest and Popping Chocolate Orange Bites. Having recently returned to his old school to talk to current pupils at Chew Valley Secondary, Josh - who won a MIchelin Star in 2011 - is keen to promote food education amongst children. “It’s absolutely vital that children learn about where our food comes from and begin thinking about the processes behind what is on our plates”, said Josh. “Food is one of the staples of life and we must educate children how to cook food, explain what is good for us, and inform them about the basics of sustainability. Think about a Victoria Sponge – how many different people, animals and processes have been involved in putting that on your plate? Too many to mention! I'm pleased that Great British Chefs are doing their bit to raise awareness - it’s a real privilege to be on the app and I’d urge you all to download it – it’s free!” Josh went on to say, “It was great to return to Chew Valley School to talk about my life as a chef. The children were great and I got out without a detention which was unexpected!” With the backing of Tesco Realfood, the app contains 105 easy-to-follow recipes, which have been specially conceived to be cooked with children. The recipes range from inventive dinners such as ‘pizza hearts’, ‘campfire chilli con carne’ or ‘Rice Krispie fish fingers’ to special treats like ‘bacon roly polies’, ‘choux caterpillar’, ‘sweetcorn and tomato muffins’ and ‘popping chocolate orange bites’ to tasty desserts like ‘tropical fruit rockets’ or ‘London Eye tart’.

There's also a series of 25 exclusively created How To videos demonstrating a range of basic cooking techniques including How To Beat an Egg, How To Ice a Cupcake and How To Crumb Butter and Flour. The app also includes exclusive recipes not previously published such as Shaun Hill's Popcorn Chicken, Frances Atkins' Three Colour Cake and Marcus Wareing's Sweetcorn Tomato Muffins.
