FLOATING OPTION

Students may choose courses from other departments at UCL up to a maximum value of 1.0 course unit per

year in their second and third year, subject to the permission of all departments concerned. Floating options

are subject to the approval of the Politics and Sociology Programme Co-ordinator. Floating options must (i)

be in Politics, International Relations, Sociology or European Studies; (ii) not be available at SSEES; and (iii)

not repeat what you have already studied at SSEES.

New courses and modifications to existing courses may be introduced to reflect changes in the region. Progression

The basic principle of the BA PSEES and PSEESYA degrees is progression from one year to the next along

defined disciplinary pathways. Knowledge and skills learned in one year provide building blocks for more

advanced study in each subsequent year.

BA Politics, Sociology and East European Studies (PSEES) SCHEME FOR THE AWARD OF HONOURS Students registered for the degree are required to undertake a programme of study comprising courses to

the value of 4.0 course units in each year.

In order to proceed to the second year, all students must be complete in 4.0 course units and have passed a

minimum of 3.0 course units. In order to proceed to the third and final year of the programme, students

must be complete in 8.0 course units and have passed a minimum of 7.0 course units. In each year, students

must have passed any courses deemed compulsory for progression.

Courses deemed compulsory for progression are: Year 1: Understanding Politics: The Big Questions or Un-

derstanding Politics: How Politics Works and Understanding Society: Introduction to Social Theory or Under-

standing Society: Introduction to Political Sociology; Year 2: Comparative Political Analysis and any one of

the following: Politics and Society in Central and Eastern Europe; Russian Politics and Society; Post-Soviet

Politics and Society; or South-East European Politics and Societies.

The pass mark for each course unit is 40%. Consequences of Failure The pass mark for each course unit is 40%. From 2017/18 onwards, late summer resits will be available for eligible students who fail between 0.5 and 2.0 course units. These students will resit the failed compo-nents of the module/s (exams and/or coursework) in late summer and their overall mark for the module/s will be capped at 40%. If they then meet the requirements for progression, they will progress to the next year as usual. Students are not eligible for a resit if they are eligible for the award of a degree despite the failed mod-ule/s, or if they have been excluded for academic insufficiency, academic misconduct or disciplinary issues. Students cannot be reassessed in a module they have passed. Students who fail more than 2.0 course units will usually be required to repeat the failed modules in the following academic year, re-enrolling in all failed modules and paying tuition and fees, and must redo all components of all the modules they failed. Their results in those modules will be capped at 40%. Students will not be able to commence the next level of study until the repeat is successfully passed. If a course unit is not passed after the second attempt, whether the second attempt is a resit or a repeat of the entire year, the student is deemed to have irretrievably failed the module and if this makes it impossi-ble for them to obtain the degree, their registration on the programme will be terminated by the Examina-tion Board. Scheme for the Award of Honours

To be awarded an honours degree, a student must have completed courses to the value of 12.0 course units

and satisfied the examiners in courses to a minimum value of 11.0 course units, fulfilling all attendance and

coursework requirements, submitting all written work prescribed for assessment purposes and taking all

parts of any examination in those courses.

18

To be awarded a degree with honours in the field of study for which the student is registered, the student

must have taken and passed any course units deemed compulsory for such an award, according to local

rules.

Students who fail to satisfy the examiners in 11.0 or more course units but who have nevertheless completed

at least 11.0 course units and passed a minimum of 10.0 course units, including at least two at advanced

level and two in their final year, together with any deemed compulsory according to local rules, may be

awarded an Ordinary Degree in their registered field of study. Students who are eligible for the award of an

Ordinary Degree under these requirements but who have not satisfied the examiners in one or more courses

deemed compulsory will be awarded an Ordinary Degree in a different field of study, to be determined by

the Board of Examiners.

Classification

Degree classification will be calculated on the basis of the median of results in modules to the value of 9.0 course units, to be selected and weighted as follows: First year: the best course unit (or two half units) with a weighting of 1 Second year: all four course units, with a weighting of 3 Final year: all four course units, with a weighting of 5 Marks for retaken or substitute modules will be included in the calculation for the year of study in which the module was first attempted. The marks for retaken or substituted modules will be capped at the pass mark (40%). Consideration of borderlines

Honours Degree candidates whose weighted average mark falls within 1% of the next classification bound-ary (after rounding to the nearest integer) may be considered for the higher classification. The Programme Board of Examiners should take the following criteria into account:

· Whether the majority of credits (at least 50%) fall in the higher classification. · Whether there is evidence of “exit velocity” in the candidate’s performance. · Whether high value modules, or those with a significant research element such as the dissertation, fall

in the higher class. · Attention to those marks which have a particular significance for the overall classification. Full details of UG Borderline Criteria are available in chapter 4 of the UCL Academic Manual

BA Politics, Sociology and East European Studies with a Year Abroad (PSEESYA)

APPLICABLE ONLY TO STUDENTS COMMENCING THEIR DEGREE IN 2016/17 OR LATER Students registered for the degree are required to undertake a programme of study comprising courses to

the value of 4.0 cu in each year.

In order to proceed to the second year of the programme, all students must have passed a minimum of 3.0

course units. In order to proceed to the third year of the programme, all students must have passed a mini-

mum of 7.0 course units. In order to proceed to the final year, all students must have passed a minimum of

10.5 course units. In each year, students must have passed any courses deemed compulsory for progression.

In order to progress from Year two, students must be complete in the 4.0 Course Units from Year 1 and have

passed at least 7.0 Course Units.

In order to progress from Year three, students must be complete in 12.0 Course Units, have passed at least

11.0 Course Units, and have met all Year two and three progression requirements.

These are: Year 1: Understanding Politics: The Big Questions or Understanding Politics: How Politics Works

and Understanding Society: Introduction to Social Theory or Understanding Society: Introduction to Political

Sociology; Year 2: Comparative Political Analysis and any one of the following: Politics and Society in Central

and Eastern Europe; Russian Politics and Society; Post-Soviet Politics and Society; South-East European Pol-

itics and Societies; Year 3: Year Abroad Assignment.

The pass mark for each course unit is 40%.

Work to the value of 4.0 cu will be undertaken during the third year of the degree. To consist of: Year abroad

assignment (1.0 cu); Performance Certificate (1.0 cu); Progress portfolio (1.0 cu) and Self-evaluation report

(1.0 cu). The year abroad assignment is assessed at SSEES and contributes 1.0 cu towards the final degree

classification.

Consequences of Failure

The pass mark for each course unit is 40%. From 2017/18 onwards, late summer resits will be available for

eligible students who fail between 0.5 and 2.0 course units. These students will resit the failed components

of the module/s (exams and/or coursework) in late summer and their overall mark for the module/s will be

capped at 40%. If they then meet the requirements for progression, they will progress to the next year as

usual.

Students are not eligible for a resit if they are eligible for the award of a degree despite the failed module/s,

or if they have been excluded for academic insufficiency, academic misconduct or disciplinary issues. Stu-

dents cannot be reassessed in a module they have passed.

Students who fail more than 2.0 course units will usually be required to repeat the failed modules in the

following academic year, re-enrolling in all failed modules and paying tuition and fees, and must redo all

components of all the modules they failed. Their results in those modules will be capped at 40%. Students

will not be able to commence the next level of study until the repeat is successfully passed.

20

If a course unit is not passed after the second attempt, whether the second attempt is a resit or a repeat of

the entire year, the student is deemed to have irretrievably failed the module and if this makes it impossible

for them to obtain the degree, their registration on the programme will be terminated by the Examination

Board.

Award of degree

To be awarded an honours degree, a student must have completed courses to the value of 16.0 course units,

and satisfied the examiners in courses to a minimum value of 14.5 course units, fulfilling all attendance and

coursework requirements, submitting all written work prescribed for assessment purposes and taking all

parts of any examination in those courses.

To be awarded a degree with honours in the field of study for which the student is registered, the student

must have taken and passed any course units deemed compulsory for such an award, according to local

rules.

Students who fail to satisfy the examiners in 14.5 or more course units, but who have nevertheless passed a

minimum of 13.0 course units, including at least three at advanced level and two in their final year, together

with any deemed compulsory according to local rules, may be awarded an Ordinary Degree in their regis-

tered field of study. Students who are eligible for the award of an Ordinary Degree under these require-

ments, but who have not satisfied the examiners in one or more courses deemed compulsory, will be

awarded an Ordinary Degree in a different field of study, to be determined by the Board of Examiners.

Classification

NB: This will apply to all students starting in 2016/17 or later Degree classification will be calculated on the basis of the median of results in modules to the value of 9.0 course units, to be selected and weighted as follows: First year: the best course unit (or two half units) with a weighting of 1 Second year: all four course units, with a weighting of 3 Final year: all four course units, with a weighting of 5 The year abroad does not contribute to the classification calculation, but must be passed. See 12.12 below for consequences of failure of the year abroad. Marks for retaken or substitute modules will be included in the calculation for the year of study in which the module was first attempted. The marks for retaken or substituted modules will be capped at the pass mark (40%). NB: This will apply to all students starting before 2016/17 Degree classification will be calculated on the basis of the median of results in modules to the value of 10.0 course units, to be selected and weighted as follows: First year: the best course unit (or two half units) with a weighting of 1 Second year: all four course units, with a weighting of 3 Year abroad: the year abroad project, with a weighting of 5.
