WelcomeThe School of Professional and Continuing Education opens the doors to Long Island University’s vast resources and faculty. Whether you want to pursue a new passion, shift your career or experiment with returning to college, the LIU Post School of Professional Continuing Education helps more than 4,000 non-traditional adult learners participate in lifelong learning opportunities.

Certificate programs, non-credit courses, tutoring, and workshops are offered at convenient day, evening, and weekend times. We provide year-round educational opportunities for high school and college students, professionals and executives, working parents, alumni, senior citizens, and local residents.

Jennielynn Samiano, BSA foundational level Art class that will introduce students to the elements of art and to a variety of media. Students will draw, paint, collage, and sculpt. The arts provide students with disabilities important means to make, understand, and express meaning. A goal of the course is to support students by creating critical insights, new entry points, increased motivation, and opportunity to grow new, meaningful, and innovative partnerships.

Christine Dwyer, MSDiscovering the transformative power of the arts, this dance movement class will enable each participant to improve large muscle movement, joint mobility, muscle tone, spatial awareness, and coordination. Whatever the specific disability domain: physical, communicative, emotional, intellectual or sensory, dance movement activities will provide multiple entry points to the world of expression for every participant. The accessible class will feature music from different genres such as classical, ballet, jazz, and hip hop.

Tuesdays at 5:00 p.m.

Elise S. Sobol, Ed.D.Ensemble classes will include playing duets and trios in jazz, blues, ragtime, classical, and popular music styles arranged specifically for C.E.A. students. Repertoire to be determined based on skill levels and number of students enrolled. Music supplied by instructor. Culminating performance event with instructor and other Department of Music collegiate members, scheduled at the end of each semester, and open to the LIU Post Community.

Elise S. Sobol, EdDThis course is for students with varying experience playing the piano featuring keyboard fundamentals such as note reading, basics of music theory, block, and broken chords, through a range of musical styles from classics to popular jazz and rock standards. Instructional adaptations tailored to specific learning needs of student. Materials sequenced and provided by instructor for ongoing success and enjoyment. Class placement is based upon proficiency levels. Culminating performance events with instructor and other Department of Music collegiate members open to the LIU Post Community.

CONTINUING EDUCATION IN ARTS (CEA)

Continuing Education in Arts (CEA) is a unique opportunity in our collegiate setting for post-secondary (21+) aged individuals with a wide range of disabilities to participate in music and arts enrichment on a non-matriculating basis. Classes are held weekly by semester with experienced, trained and state certified instructors in the arts, and special education. Performance and gallery exhibits are scheduled at the end of each semester to showcase abilities, growth and talents of participants. Elise S. Sobol, EdDLearners will build proficiency for music notation reading through interactive technology: Pitch, melody, harmony, rhythm, and chord structures form the basis for creative expression and performance. Recommended for all Continuing Education in Arts (CEA) music students.

Samantha Stankamp, MAFor students with an interest in participating in musical productions. Students will learn skills necessary in producing a musical theater performance including singing, movement, and expressing emotion in their music making. Individual and group works will be chosen to help foster each student’s creative expression and self-confidence in performance for others.

Thomas Kopec, MA and MSThis new class invites instrumentalists such as guitarists, keyboardists, drummers, and vocalists with minimum playing proficiency the opportunity to gain more ensemble experience while expanding their understanding of rudiments. Bi-weekly hour class, combines skill-based performance techniques with regular jam using wide range of pop music. Culminating performance event open to the LIU Post community.

Samantha Stankamp, MAFor students with limited experience playing the alto saxophone. Students will learn the basics of playing saxophone while learning to read music, produce good sound, and perform in a variety of musical styles. This class will cover classical and contemporary music, as well as jazz and rock which prominently features the instrument. Instructional adaptations designed for the specific needs of each student. Performance event at the end of semester will be open to the LIU Post community.

AGILE PROJECT MANAGEMENTPeter LandiniOver the past 10 years, organizations have come to embrace Agile methodologies to deliver technology related projects. Agile is based on adaptive, change-driven project planning and utilizes techniques such as scrum, sprint, and retrospectives. This course will introduce you to the basics of Agile project management and how to use its tools and techniques effectively within the project context. This course also prepares students for the Professional Scrum Master (PSM) certification exam offered by Scrum.org. Please note that LIU does not administer the PSM exam. Peter LandiniLearn the graceful form of Tai Chi Chuan, which is often described as a meditation in motion. Developed centuries ago as a martial art, Tai Chi also enables us to fight different battles of modern life including fatigue, stress, and joint pain. It is a low impact exercise helping to improve flexibility, strength and balance. This class is suitable for people of all ages, perfect for beginners as well as those looking to deepen their Tai Chi practice. HEALTH INSTITUTEPrograms in the Health Institute are offered through Continuing Education. Many of these non-credit programs are designed for professionals in the health care industry, but some programs, such as Medical Office Billing, are open to the general public and do not require pre-requisites. MEDICAL OFFICE BILLING CERTIFICATE PROGRAMMedical office billing opportunities are becoming more prevalent with the increased popularity of managed care programs, the formation of group practices and the shift of patient care from hospitals to physicians’ offices. This series of courses is designed to provide the medical office biller with the skills necessary to accurately assign diagnoses and procedure codes for medical claim submissions, as well as bill various insurance carriers appropriately. This certificate program provides the tools needed to become a valuable member of any physician’s healthcare team.

CERTIFICATE REQUIREMENTSTo earn LIU Post’s certificate in Medical Office / Physician Practice Coding, each student is required to successfully complete the following five courses: • Business of Medicine • Medical Terminology • Intro to Anatomy / Chapter Specific Pathophysiology • ICD-10-CM Coding for the Medical Office • CPT Coding I and II

Comprehensive examinations will be given in each course and satisfactory completion of all examinations must be accomplished before the certificate is awarded through Continuing Education.

CERTIFICATE OF COMPLETIONA certificate of completion will be presented to those who successfully complete the program courses.

REQUIRED TEXT Five (5) textbooks are required and will be available at the LIU Post Campus Bookstore.

Shawndenine Lomax-MosleyThis course provides a beginners overview of the structure and conditions and functions of the human body. This course is designed to provide students with a foundation of medical coding by integrating the basic concepts of disease classification and medical office coding with anatomy and physiology concepts. The beginner’s anatomy and pathophysiology course is taught in conjunction with Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) Course. The CPT portion of the course introduces students to the procedural coding as it relates to these systems. This will cover the basics of CPT coding, including proper use of evaluation and management codes, medicine codes, and surgical codes. Students will be taught coding methods for various surgical procedures, case scenarios, and special services will be provided. Pre-requisite: Medical Terminology.

COLOR THEORY AND MEDIALynn KaplanAt the end of this class, each student will be expected to mix any color seen from the three basic pigment colors of red, yellow and blue. During the course we discuss the color wheel, hue, value, intensity, color psychology, color schemes and how to use color to alter perception. Each student will have to mix pigments to create color and learn how to adjust colors to specifications. No pre-requisite required.

Mary Brower and Ira FreireichIn order to qualify for licensure as a real estate salesperson, an applicant must have satisfactorily completed a 75-hour salesperson qualifying education course in real estate approved by the Secretary of State, and have passed a qualifying examination administered by the Department of State. An applicant who completed the 45-hour salesperson qualifying course prior to July 1, 2008 may complete the 30-hour remedial course in order to qualify for licensure.

Mary BrowerIf you wish to become a real estate broker, this required course will provide you with an in-depth study of taxes, management, appraisal, valuation, leases, interest rates, sources of funds, secondary mortgage markets, and mortgage banking. You will also become familiar with specialized areas of real estate: sub-divisions, developments, condominiums, public housing, urban renewal, and rehabilitation projects. A discussion of zoning and appraisal of urban real estate will complete the program. This course is also approved for 22.5 hours of the required continual education for the real estate salesperson.
